Welcome to Radiant Recovery®

February 25, 2018

Hi {!firstname_fix},

I am visiting my brother and sister-in-law in Sarasota Florida. This morning I went out early to get a copy of the Sunday paper. There is a hibiscus bush blooming right outside the door. It was an exquisite morning. The air still and sparkling, everything was dewy. It was cool, the sky was blue and I thought, this is why people come to Florida in the winter. Three months of grey skies and cold would wear anyone down. Come to warmth and hibiscus blooming and your spirit will be renewed.

Yesterday a group of us got together and were talking about the growth and deepening of the community over time. The power of this message of healing still moves me. I have been reading the introductions of the people in the new Using the Resources of the Community Class and thinking, *Yes, we are here for you. Yes, We have answers and solace.  Welcome. Drink from the well.*  I think that taking time to be away for reflection is always good. It deepens me and give me perspective.

I was helping my sister-in-law put together a power washer she received as a Christmas present. It has several fittings. The water has to go into the machine, the water has to come out of the machine, the machine has to have the right nozzle, the plug has to go in the right place.  She could not figure out which adapter went where and was pretty frustrated. I couldn't figure it out either. Then shock of shocks, what about the INSTRUCTIONS. I read them. It made sense. This one goes here first. Then this one. I was laughing. It is like the steps. Read the instructions, follow the instructions and the machine will work. Driveway gets clean. Life is fun.

Remember if you have ideas or input for us on what you would like to have available, share them on the  community forum. We do listen and are very interested in your ideas.

The link will show you all the choices. Please note that coaching apprentice is open to people starting or restarting. Testimonial of the Week
Sunday, I had the house to myself because the daughters went to the beach. When Cathy (the older one) came by to pick up Margie, she found us in the middle of a hilarious discussion. Margie was doing her comic routine and mimicking again.

This time she was mimicking what happens when her friends come over after school and look in the fridge for something to eat. Inside are either whole-foods ingredients like kale and unflavored yogurt, or strange-looking leftovers (my spinach-and-pumpkin quiche). She says they say, "oh I'm not that hungry" and then close the door. So then they roam to the pantry and what is there are things like canned salmon, turmeric, and two-year-old coconut milk from some experiment I planned. So the friend gets this sad look on her face and leaves the kitchen.

So then Cathy comes in and said she dropped by the other day to raid the fridge and hmm, that pumpkin pie looks good - but why does it have green in it!!! eyew!!

They laughed their heads off. But then we talked about how different it is to do homemade whole foods as opposed to having convenience food around all the time.

And then we did some problem-solving so Margie could feel like a better hostess. We came up with nuts, fruit, HFS chips and salsa, good PB&J, good sandwiches. Margie asked how she could recognize "healthy" alternatives of things to have so we talked just a little about labels. This is a big deal because she hates with a passion when I read labels too much while shopping.

Too funny.

We have maintained the use of isolates rather than concentrates, which ensures that the product has a highly bio-available amino acid profile. There are no added sweeteners, chemicals or hidden flavoring. It also tastes fabulous.

Black Bean Brownies
I think this is one of our most fun recipes. It is totally program friendly and totally delicious. I know, I know you don't believe me, but I am not kidding!

Radiant Living
I have changed the rules about Radiant Living and Your Last Diet Chats. If you are a member of either program, you may attend the chats for both Living and YLD. If you would like to attend 2 chats a week, you are more than welcome to do so. We are now using our new chat room. I have posted the logistics of getting into the room on the Living List and Steph posted them at YLD. Please go over and practice before chat. Read the room instructions and the guides for chatting. Begin at the landing page.  But remember you will need the password to access the landing page.

Your Last Diet!

Do I have to be on step 7 to join YLD?
No. In fact, it is great to come join right at the beginning. YLD gives you a whole level of support you can't find anywhere else in the community.

I don't need to lose weight. Is there any point in joining?
Absolutely. The chats alone are worth the price of joining. It is where you can actively participate in shaping the vision of the community, learn about the latest trends, and just have a terrific time with other members from around the world.

If you are not a YLD member, come and join us. If you are a current member and want to join us in the new chat room, come to the  landing page.  I will post the page chat words on the YLD list.

If you would like to join us in YLD, come find us here.

The Values of Radiant Recovery®
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I suspect that many of you may not think about what is behind our community. Who are we? What are we about? This is way more than responding to a collection of books. Radiant Recovery® is a community, grown by a group of volunteer mentors under my leadership. We meet every week. We talk, we sort things out, we work to continue to foster and grow the vision of a highly functional, creative healing place. Some of us have been working together for many years. It only gets better and better.

Here are the values we operate with:

1) Commitment to the vision. We believe that the Radiant Recovery® program offers a life changing solution for the problem of sugar sensitivity and are willing to change our food, change our lives and share the vision with others.

2) Simplicity. We will provide solutions to sugar sensitivity that are easy to understand and implement.

3) Respect. We will recognize the individuality and unique differences of each person doing the program by reinforcing the unique, individually tailored aspect of the food plans.

4) Listening. We will acknowledge that the most powerful definition of our success comes from those using the services and products we offer.

5) Integrity. We deliver the promises we make. We say what we mean and we mean what we say.

6) Compassion. We encourage self-awareness and empowerment in our community members by providing information in a non-judgmental way and remembering our own journeys.

7) Empowerment. Rather than telling what to do, we will provide tools that enable members to find the way out of chaos, feeling stuck and overwhelmed into a sense of clarity, focus and direction. We will work to teach rather than tell.

8) Modeling. Our leadership will commit to living our values, working the program and being fully accountable for the quality of their own recovery. We will walk our talk.

9) Responsibility. We will take responsibility for how we do business. We commit to being culturally and linguistically sensitive to the range of interests, concerns and backgrounds of our members.

One year, I went to a trade show put on by the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association. Five of our mentor team attended. They came to help, paid their own expenses, wore their Radiant Recovery® shirts and went around and talked to vendors, bookstore owners and buyers. I kept running into people who said *Oh, yes, one of your people was here*. No one could believe that this *staff* was there voluntarily because they care about the books and the message. The model we are creating is sort of outside the box.

At any rate, I am inviting you to participate and share in the development of this vision. If you have ideas and comments or thoughts or critique, email me. I will take your feedback, put it up on the web and we can all talk about it. get how this works, we can start making choices for healing.

Here is the Annie Lane column that brought so many of you here.

Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from "Weird, Stupid or Selfish?" – whose husband eats all the decorative candy she puts out. His inability to resist sugar resonated with me, as I have sugar sensitivity and have engaged in exactly the same behaviors. I simply could not resist sugar.

After years of struggling and dieting and sitting in work meetings obsessing about the doughnuts instead of the topic at hand, I discovered the book "Potatoes Not Prozac," by Kathleen DesMaisons. Her theory is that people who are sugar sensitive have brains that respond differently to sugar, alcohol and refined carbs and that what they eat and when they eat it have a huge effect on them. She shows how to rebalance blood sugar levels, serotonin and beta-endorphins through small lifestyle changes and offers the latest research, free online support and seven steps to change your life. It is not about willpower; it’s about biochemistry, which her program can slowly improve, just one tiny step at a time, with amazing results.

I have been sugar-free for six years now, lost 25 pounds and never gained any of it back. I can go to dinner with family and don’t even think twice when someone orders dessert. I don’t have cravings, and sugar is no longer on my radar. I am more focused and more tolerant, and the daily mood swings are gone. The woman who wrote to you could suggest to her husband that he check out https:// radiantrecovery.com to see whether he does have sugar sensitivity. At the very least, she would be better informed about this condition. – Happy Without Sugar

Dear Happy Without Sugar: I hadn’t considered that health issues might explain

her husband’s behavior. In fact, I hadn’t even heard of sugar sensitivity.

Thanks for opening my eyes to the condition! I’d like to encourage all readers to talk to their doctors if they find themselves compulsively eating sugary snacks.
