WORKING WITH KATHLEEN
In the last week I have been organizing all my Medicare and insurance filing. this means I have been actually reading charges. I learned that my Doctor (the primary care family guy) charges $163 for a 15 min session. That would be $552 an hour. That was sobering. And I thought, I really should give you some context for the fees I have so they make sense to you.
Coaching is a special offering for people who are serious about enhancing their programs and would like to have ongoing coaching. We do individual assessments to sort out exactly where you are in the process. You will be guided in making your own individual plan. You can learn about journaling and adjusting your food for your own life needs – what to do when. You will be given tools and shown
how to use them. Coaching is done via a group with 4-8 or so people who are working at the same skill level.
Apprentice coaching is geared for people who are on steps one – three. We are just starting a new group called Return to Radiance Coaching for those who have done the steps in the past and then drifted.
Skilled Coaching is for people who are steady on step three and ready to move through four-six and then proceed to Step 7 and life issues. The small groups stay together as they learn
skills.
The fee structure is designed to do two things 1) to make coaching accessible and 2) to train you in learning to work with your peers in doing problem solving and collaboration. I am there as a guide and consultant. Coaching is $20 a week and is billed automatically every 2 weeks. Some consultants have told me it is way too cheap and I am undercutting my value. I just laugh
at them and tell them they haven't a clue about accessibility.
Signature Coaching is intensive individual coaching geared to your specific situation. You may want to step out of the
craziness of sugar addiction, return to steadiness and clarity after slipping away, slow down and focus on your recovery, or deepen a steady rhythm of recovery.
This is a way to step out of feeling overwhelmed with where to start and what to do. Because it is so individualized, we can work on what is right for you at this point in your journey. People tell me that coaching helps them feel safe and focused. We work with your style, your rhythm. We address your fear and let go of shame. Signature coaching means
you work directly with me for 90 days. We do an assessment and do some thinking about your needs, your style and goals. You pay the regular fee for that. And then if you decide you want to go forward, you get a discounted rate for the 90 days. But this is NOT the $20 a week offering, LOL. It is an incredible opportunity. Forget the 15 min with someone typing into a computer while pretending to listen. This is your story, your body,
your history and your stuff. We sleuth out what you need and want and design the absolute best way to get there.

"There is life after addiction and it is a very good one!"
I have always been an 'off the ground' person who was neither anchored very deeply nor centered emotionally. I am grateful for recovery because I feel that this is really much more of who I am. A wonderful maturity begins to emerge.
I go to pow-wows a lot in the summer in Minnesota. There is a dance that a lot of the women do (you have to choose one style and can only dance that way and your regalia must match the style) called 'traditional.' The women, many of whom are elders, come out with beautifully, intricately beaded moccasins, oftentimes a feather fan made out of a hawk wing, a beatiful dress with ribbon fringes, and beadwork barrettes
and hairclips.
The dance itself is very very slow. The women stand straight upright and walk/march slowly to the beat of the drum in a large circle with the rest of the dancers. They never move quickly. They are a sea of slow, powerful energy as the younger, more active dancers flit by doing fancy, shawl, jingle, grass, etc. dancing.
These women are radiant, but like deep radiant -- Where there is this very quiet, deep power that radiates from them. They are unflappable, anchored. Nothing can push them - a wonderful, wise certainty. This is what I imagine the deepening that occurs with step 7 brings. Not high zingy energy, but a slowburning vitality that is grounded, deep and very very wise.
I am so early in this process - just new at moving; not yet meditating, and knowing that there is even more depth to the food groove.
It's a beautiful thing,
maggi

I think you will love the Safe Place CD. I am bringing this to you again because I think it is one of the most special things we have. It has a special introduction, and is licensed to use the Kolbialka Bolero we all love so much. It is timed for 20 minutes so is ideal for your mediation time. It is the ground for all the work of stilling the mind and opening your heart to healing.
Kathleen has been using this meditation with her clients for more than 25 years. She uses it as the center of her own spiritual practice. Like her food program, it is deceptively simple. Kathleen takes her listeners to a place of safety.
Use this CD over and over to train a response that is immediate and fully relaxed. Teach your deepest self to be quiet and still. Open your heart to the light and your life will change.

Last week at Ranch, I had someone ask me why I don't just tell people what to eat in order to lose weight. It really pushed me to think about what it is we are doing in YLD. The key concept is about LAST - this means the whole point is to get you to realize that diets are not the story. Diets = restriction which is simply one more way of taking away power. YLD is all about *empowerment*
which means it is slow, thoughtful and transformative. It can be a little disorienting since it is so different from what you are used to.
Chats, chats, chats. We just keep talking, reflecting, learning. You will learn about fat terror, about the myths of obesity, how dieting fosters *restriction* and what that means for your long term success. We add new science to help you understand why you do what you do.
I’m in my third year of recovery and THIS year is the worst roller coaster of trying to balance my protein/sugar/mood swings. Was at wit’s end, wondering where could I find a doctor who knew addiction recovery AND nutrition when my sis sent me a blurb on your book. Went to bookstore and the words leapt off the cover at me! I KNEW it was more than just blood sugar; I had been doing food combining, protein in the
a.m ., etc., for years, even before I quit drinking. You have saved my life and, more important, my peace of mind by filling in the blank spaces in my diet management. All I want is to feel normal after I eat! Even after I had the blood sugar thing down, I was still experiencing weird feelings, and there they were in the book: a column for beta-endorphin and one for serotonin! Thank you so much for giving me direction!! God bless you! I have been telling everyone about your
book.

Doing the Program with Your Kids
Kathleen DesMaisons, PhD
Many of the parents are trying to sort out how to handle children who are exhibiting difficult f behaviors. They listed all the typical interventions you have heard: time outs, warnings, taking away privileges, negotiating all the things the experts tell you to do. They also noted the things that the experts tell you not to do like yelling and smacking. These will not work with sugar sensitive children. Little sugar addicts are in an altered state
when their chemistry is off. They are not rational. Punishment or discipline does not achieve the desired effect.
If you can begin to look at these behaviors in a new way, you may be able to come up with some creative alternatives to what you have been doing. If your little sugar sensitive child starts acting up, feed her. Give him some protein and fruit right away. The fruit will deal with any sugar withdrawal that might be operating and will provide quick blood sugar relief. The protein will provide sustained, time-release support to his blood sugar.
We have a funny saying in our parent community cheese not soap. A cheese stick does wonders for a mouthy kid. Keep cheese sticks in the refrigerator all the time. Carry almonds in your purse. Put cheese and crackers in the glove compartment. Always have some power food available. Know where to stop and what to get in an emergency.
Yesterday my 13 year old did not do his chores exactly right and when I asked him to finish them correctly, he said, Mom, what do you expect? It is not my fault that I forgot to finish it is my messed up biochemistry. My kids are too smart for me but I was able to counter him by tossing him a cheese stick. And it worked. Today I noticed my husband giving the kids protein. And even better telling the kids to wait for a sugar treat
until dinner. Sometimes I think I need to stop thinking so much and just start doing. My husband did not need the whole theory, he just thought it made sense and gave it a try. I think I can learn from this. DeAnna.
Feed your children when they come home from school. They cannot go from noon 'til six. Their metabolism simply cannot cope with that amount of time without eating. If you are home, fix them something. If you work and they are responsible for after school fare, make sure to stock up and leave sufficient choices for them. Many children do really well with leftovers. If you make extra and have planned overs, you can make it really easy for your children to
snack when they get home.
For children who play after school sports, a planned snack is even more important. Pack an extra sandwich. Send along shake mix in a plastic bag. Your child can get an extra carton of milk and mix it with the protein powder. Or you can get some dry milk powder and mix it with the protein powder, put it in a shaker cup and stash it in the backpack.
Many parents send sandwiches with lunchmeat or peanut butter for after school snacks. Go back and look again at the discussion of the protein amount your child needs. Generally speaking, shoot for a snack to contain 1/2 the protein that a meal will contain. If your child needs 20 grams of protein for breakfast, she will need 10 grams for her snack. A slice of bologna has about 3 grams, so it may not be the best choice. As they do these calculations,
most parents realize that the snacks they have been providing are low in protein. A number of people have reported a huge change in their childs attitude just from this one change. Getting enough to eat and regular intervals is crucial for the sugar sensitive child. Maintaining a stable blood sugar is significantly more important in children than in adults and I think it s easy for parents to miss this.
