July 22, 2013 Hi {!firstname_fix} On Friday, early in the morning, there was an incredible rainbow in the sky. It was shimmering. And had two bands of purple and two bands of blue. It really was a miracle rainbow. The heat of last week has shifted with the rains (and rainbows) coming. The trees are happy, the burned grasses are sending up green shoots. I have placed 6 rescue dogs in the last month. Often the people send me pictures with the dogs in their new homes. Happy dogs, happy people, it is nice for me. **Radiant Life ** It took me a long time to accept my sugar-sensitive self. And it took a lot of attempts at doing other things to try and convince myself that I was *normal,* really. (grin) Each time I veered off the RR path my husband used to say I was like a moth going towards a light, each time getting more and more burnt. But each time I learned that Radiant Recovery was where I needed to be. Accepting that I am sugar sensitive has changed my life soooo much and actually this program has given me back my life and so much more! Something that helped change my perspective was to think about where I was going to be in 5 years time. Flying towards another seemingly bright light, trying out the next latest diet, trapped in the cycle of addiction, or living my life how I wanted to. It took the pressure off and instead of rushing through the steps I took my time and reconnected with what this process really is about. And you can probably guess that in a considerably lot less than 5 years I am at my target weight and I am listening to what my body needs and wants and honestly couldn't be happier. **How I Found Radiant Recovery ** My name is Helen and I am looking forward to my first RR class. I've been around since December. I'm working on step 3 and I've joined the YLD group. I still can't believe that I enjoy my journal. Not so long ago I thought I'd never move from step 2. Then I thought I would never get close to 3 meals without snacking all day! Now step 3 is beginning to come together, and every area of my life is improving. **Our Online Groups ** Have you been sitting on the couch a lot, suffering from being inside too much, and thinking about a wee bit of movement? We would love to have you join us in exploring new ways of moving on the Movement List. Even if you can only walk to the end of the driveway, you are welcome. We have a new team to support you and we are planning LOTS of fun. The Movement list is for people who want to start moving again and to baby step into a regular exercise program. If you can remember how much fun it was to move when you were a child and you've lost that, the Movement list is the perfect place for you. And, if you don't remember, we'll help you rediscover it. There are some wonderful people on the list who will share their stories and help you explore different options to form a movement plan that works for you.. We are enthusiastic about our own exercise, but we also understand first hand how hard it was to start and to baby step into regular movement. **So What About Consultations? ** Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.
I recently wanted to get an appointment with my doctor. The next possibility was 6 weeks out. I could get a 10-minute slot. The fee would be $100 basically for his opinion. I asked if I could get a 3-minute fly by sooner and the answer was no, not an option. I have been thinking about that model and why it irks me. It also made me laugh since he doesn't do anything different from any other doc out there around time and money. They have to pay for overhead, for staff to do the insurance billing and all the record keeping. And I totally respect paying for expertise. But somehow it doesn't seem to get to the heart of helping people stay well. The upside is that it has made me think about the model we use here. I spend a lot of time working on the lists, the forum and chats. I spend a lot of time training the people who are helping you on the lists. And I write a lot to try to give you access to information that will empower you to find answers. And I try to make space to do some consultations to provide you with that as an option as well. A number of people have asked me why or when they should do a *consultation* with me. And whether they should do a long one, a short one or an ASK Kathleen. I thought it would be helpful to give you some guidance. It always works better if you have a sense of what to best use the time for. Generally speaking when you have a more complex situation, having a consult can be very helpful. I can help you sort out the pieces, prioritize them and see how the food can help you. Or if you are feeling overwhelmed and confused, I can make the process quicker and more focused. Many people have found that spending time with me gives them clarity that would have taken months and months to grope to on their own. They like specific guidance, focused problem solving and expertise in honing down individual adaptations. Sometimes people have worked with many practitioners and have found little understanding of the role of food in the process. Or how one might taper off of medications with less withdrawal. The time is very *solution* based. The other thing that works really well is to get a consult at the start of your program and let me give you a template about what resources to use in what order. Usually we spend an hour for the first conversation, and then simply do short check ins after that. Some people do this regularly, say once a month, to stay on target. The key is I like to work with you to help you use the resources we have to support you. Or you can use an ASK Kathleen to get a specific answer to a specific question.
