Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well, it has been hot here this last week. The temperatures went on up to 104F or so. Usually because it is so dry, our swamp coolers work fine. Last week, they were blowing hot air and I felt like I was going to melt. I talked a little about this in last week's newsletter, but I want to continue the problem solving part of the story. My regular handyman was not to be found. I went to Craig's list and asked a guy to come look at them. He was a stoner from the 70's. I was thankful that it is a flat roof and I did not have to worry about his falling off.

He checked things out very slowly. VERY SLOWLY. While he was looking at everything, I took the side panel off and thought about how it works. The water is pumped up to a top tube that then drops into a trough at the top of the panel. There are slots in the trough so the water will then flow down into the pad that is held in place on the panel. I noticed that the slots were all corroded over with calcium - we have very hard water. So, I got my screwdriver and scraped them off. Problem #1 solved.

Then I noticed there were a few rust holes in the side of the unit [no, I have not generally gone up and looked, LOL]. I thought about it. Holes would mean the blower was just sucking in hot air directly from the roof rather than sucking air through the cooling pads. I told Mr. Stoner to put duct tape over the holes. He was concerned that I was using *expensive* tape since it was hot pink. I assured him it was fine.

Now the coolers work perfectly. I will replace the unit at the end of the summer when they have sales. I learned a lot. Not to get flapped or mad, just to get mobilized. This experience has nudged me to add a new column to the newsletter about *Radiant LIfe* - these experiences we all have that are so different from how it was *before*. I thought it would be fun to share.

My other good news is that Mr. Curley, they dogaroo who was shot and had his leg fractured, has a new permanent home. I had some people volunteer to walk him. They started with 100 feet out and back, and then progressed to going up to the park. They fell in love with him. Today I showed them how to do clicker training. They could not believe that I extinguished *shark mouth* in about 45 seconds. It got their attention (Smile)....thank you for all who donated to his medical expenses. This is the best of rescue, so thank you very much!!!

Note: We will be sending out the newsletters on Monday starting next week. Look for it then.

You don't have to do years of therapy to get results. You can start changing what you eat and see the effects very quickly.

**Testimonial of the Week **

Sorry to be late responding - I have been getting the newsletter for many years now. It is the reason I came back. Reading Kathleen's piece every week or so has kept me believing in the program even when I just couldn't follow any of it.

So i vote that you subscribe! ;)

Best,

  • DS1 helping me to get the kids out the door this morning
  • chef at the cafe>
  • Michael Buble, "It's a beautiful day" playing as I drove home
  • fantastic appointment with DS2's pediatrician - I was listened to and he was interested :)
Hiiii,

This morning I had some time in between appointments with DS2, so we went for some brunch :)

They only had a set menu, but I asked for the full breakfast, explaining that I was gluten free so I didn't want the sausage, black pudding or toast to which the waiter replied, "Well we can't guarantee the rest will be gluten free" and "Are you happy to pay the full price?" in a grumpy voice. "No problem," I answered with a smile.

Then, 2 seconds later the chef came out and was really helpful and checked if I could have butter on my mushrooms and was tomato ok and would I like extra egg and bacon, oh and some potato rosti in place of toast? "Oh that will be lovely,"I replied. I had brought some browns with me, so I gave the potato rosti to DS and ate everything up with a lovely pot of peppermint tea :)

After we finished I asked the waiter to thank the chef for a delicious breakfast, referring to the fact on how well cooked and very yummy to which he replied, "Well just so you know, we aren't supposed to do that" in an even grumpier voice. I'm guessing someone hasn't eaten his breakfast this morning LOLOL!

Selena head shot

Do you remember that I wrote to a radio programme on a national radio station in the UK recently?

The Food Programme discussed sugar addiction and provided two solutions: surgery or complete abstinence. So I wrote to the presenter enclosing a copy of Potatoes not Prozac and told her a bit about my recovery journey.

And guess what? I received a hand-written response from the presenter last week! She seemed genuinely interested and glad I had written. She also mentioned that she will be in touch if they cover the subject again (well, they've covered it twice in the last few months so the chances are...)

Excitedly,

Selena

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Introduce yourself - My name is Marian. I have been sober for 23 years, nicotine free almost 6 years, struggled with food/sugar as long as I remember, lost 60 pounds on Weight Watchers but lost my motivation and started to gain back the weight. I have known I have food/sugar addiction for a long time but haven't dealt with it. It has seemed too overwhelming and had me questioning my sanity at times. I have been physically sugar-free in the past but never really dealt with healing or had a way to heal.

Say where you are from - Saint Louis, Missouri

Where you are in the program - Step One
I have (also) started journaling breakfast so am working toward Step Two slowly.

What you hope to get out of this class - strengthen my foundation, get the most out of available resources.

How you found out about Radiant Recovery too! - I searched on line for sugar-free programs after talking to some friends who were sugar-free. I found PNP on Amazon, and one of the reviews mentioned Radiant Recovery.

**Radiant YLD **

This is a post from Linda that I loved:

Hi,

It's nice to meet you. I'm so glad you are going to chat and posting on this list. It will make a huge difference.

I came to RR from 7 years of low carb. It worked for me for a while, but I was starting to put back on weight. And I missed my brain!!

Adding carbs was hard at first, but I listened to the wise ones here and did as they said. I quickly learned that a quarter cup of browns just did not work! I experimented with different browns and in different quantities. And I gained some weight.

I stayed with Step 1 until I found a combination that held me for 5 hours. I learned that having a solid Step 2 was critical for moving on to Step 3. A solid Step 3 changed everything. The weight gain stopped and the bingeing stopped. Sugar no longer had a tight grip on me. I moved the sugar to my meals, and kept the sugar at a steady amount until I was ready to reduce and detox. Unbelievably, it was effortless. And the weight angst dissolved. I still wanted to lose weight, but it wasn't my one and only thought!

I am working on weight loss now. The weight is slowly going down. I am happy and content with the downward movement of the scale. If I do have thoughts about needing to lose weight NOW, first I know I need to check my food, but secondly, the thought is just fleeting, I just don't get drawn into the drama.

Just work the steps, slowly and in order. The change will come and it will be worth the wait!

And eat the browns, it will help calm you. (smile)

Linda

**Our Online Groups **

On Fitness we talk about how doing the food can support our fitness program and vice versa. Some favorite topics are what to eat when doing intensive exercise when all that's out there commercially are sugar-filled products. We also talk about what to eat before and after morning workouts, and what to do for those folks whose training program requires a twice a day workout. We just had a great thread on the necessity of sports drinks and how doing the food is better.

We have runners, walkers, bikers, dancers, aerobicizers, yogis, and many more types of exercise enthusiasts on the list. One of the neat things is people who are recovering from exercise addiction who are learning how to work exercise back in their life in a healthy way. If any of this fits you, well, come on over and join in.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Radiant Recovery Glossary **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

We have a lot of new people and I thought it would be fun to post our *glossary* again. I will post it around in a couple of places so you can let me know if you think of other things to add.

10.10: This is code for starting a movement plan by walking 10 minutes out the door and ten minutes back.

90/90: Code for attending 90 AA meetings in 90 days. We also use it to refer to posting on the community forum or an online list once a day for 90 days.

BRB: Be right back

Browns: Short for complex carbohydrates.

Chat: Refers to the weekly online discussion held with Kathleen. This is part of the online YLD or Conversations program.

COB: Abbreviation for cream of buckwheat.

DD, DH, etc: Terms used on the internet to refer to members of one’s family such as dear husband, darling daughter, etc.

Do the Food: Shorthand and code for committing to the steps, doing them, enjoying them and moving into a different life.

Drug Talk: Conversation that includes specifics of sugar use, or acting out addictive behaviors.

ED: Abbreviation for Eating Disorder.

FOF: Abbreviation for Focus on the Food...code for working the steps rather than fretting about everything else.

Forgetting: We use this term instead of “relapse.”

Forum: Refers to the community forum where folks connect with one another.

HTH: Hope that helps

IMHO: In my humble opinion

LOL: Laughing out loud

LSA: Abbreviation for Little Sugar Addicts, the book for parents who are dealing with sugar sensitive children.

Mentors: The volunteers who have been doing the program, are on step seven and have committed to helping others discover the power of recovery.

Nanosteps : Refers to taking tiny steps to master one of the 7 steps.

Newbies: Short for beginners in the program.

NMI: Refers to a post that has the message in the subject line and has no contents.

PnP: Abbreviation for Potatoes Not Prozac, the book that started the process. It is the main source of information about sugar sensitivity and the 7 steps to healing.

Reframe: A way of shifting language to see something negative in a more positive light. For example, I get to do the program rather than I have to do the program.

Remembering: Waking up from addiction. Sugar use makes us forget. Remembering happens when we come back and start over.

ROOFTOP : We use this to express really, really laughing. When Kathleen had typed ROTFLMAO (rolling on the floor laughing my a** off) and her spell checker changed it to ROOFTOP.

RR: Radiant Recovery

SARP: Abbreviation for The Sugar Addict’s Total Recovery Program, a how-to manual for doing the 7 Steps.

Stacking: refers to an accumulation of events or different types of food. Stacking browns in a meal would mean having brown rice and another grain. Stacking events might mean many different stressful events in a week. Each one might be small, but when added together, they have a big impact.

Sugar Feelings: a tender description of the heightened emotional reactions that emerge while we are using sugar. The content is true but the enormity is heightened and distorted by sugar use.

Within an Hour: Refers to having breakfast within an hour of getting up.

YBS: Abbreviation for Your Body Speaks, the journal designed by Kathleen DesMaisons.

YLD: Abbreviation for Your Last Diet!, the book on weight loss for sugar-sensitive people. It is also the abbreviation for the online support program for weight loss.
