April 8, 2013 Hi {!firstname_fix} Well some of you have heard my latest Rescue story. On Friday I got a call from the office manager at one of our vets. A guy had brought in a 4-year-old male Golden who had been shot in the leg a few days before. The guy noticed that the leg was just hanging but thought it was amusing. When he learned the leg was broken, he decided to just have the dog euthanized. He signed him over to the vet's office and they called me. I called our local animal hospital that has an 0rthopedic surgeon on the staff. They said to bring him him. So I went down to pick up Curley. Here he was with a bullet in his leg, the bone shattered, all matted and stinky and he wagged his tail when he saw me. They operated on him last night. It is a long shot that we can save his leg, but they put a pin in and I will keep him quiet for 8 weeks. I saw the xrays with bullet fragments and a shattered bone. Gives the idea of gun violence a whole different spin. The wound just looked like a hole. The xray made me feel ill. I know that some people do not like when I share with you about Rescue. They want me always to stick to the topic of science, or doing the food. And yet, this is the same. People arrive here, broken, wounded, thrown away, and we simply show up, take care and offer healing. For me, it is simply about a way of being in the world. You can read more about Curley here. And read more about doing the food below. (smile) Another question for you. Last week, I was nominated for a national award and they asked me to write about what I had done or been since I changed my life to write Potatoes not Prozac. It was a very powerful experience. As I was doing it, I realized that really the stories of transformation are the stories of your lives. So I thought it would be fun to compile some of these. I would love to hear from you. Write about what it was like *before* you started doing the food, what happened and what it is like now. It can be as long as you like. Send it to me at Kathleen@radiantrecovery.com. These classes will begin Wednesday, April 10, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:
The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned. We will post the rest of the new schedule on Monday. I apologize for being distracted. A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum. Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly. Warmly, Kathleen **********************************************************************

**Radiant Ambassadors ** Kath told us about a talk that she gave about Radiant Recovery. I thought you'd love to see what happened as much as I did: "Today I gave a talk about RR at my local Library. The audience of 50 or so were attentive and very keen with questions at the end. I used Kathleen's Powerpoint presentation from the ambassador list files and talked to it, adapting the 10-minute talk. I had hoped to use the You Tube video "Are You a Sugar Junkie," but some technical difficulties limited that. I am glad that I took the time yesterday to go and check out the venue. Their data projector did not work with my laptop. My data stick worked in their laptop, and opening Office (rather than MS powerpoint) did work with their data projector, but there was no internet access available in that room for using the video, which I couldn't figure how to load onto the data stick. In the end it worked out just fine without!. My main purpose was to inform people, and raise awareness about sugar sensitivity. I added to the Powerpoint presentation - screenshots of the RR website, the Make Connections tab, and how to find the step 1 list, downunder etc . I handed out RR cards and had a significant number of enquiries wanting to purchase the few copies of Kathleen's books I had with me. I had taken the books as an example of what could be borrowed, (if one is prepared to wait on the interlibrary loans) and was wary of the implication that I might be trying to sell either the books or my nutrition consulting...I was there to tell a story (smile). Nonetheless, people bought books, and I had a consult immediately afterwards with a member of the audience. At the moment it is someone who deems herself computer illiterate. We shall see (chuckle). I was very grateful to have the Powerpoint and talk resources to call on and use as a base for what I presented (thank you so much, Kathleen). The feedback was that it was clear, easy to follow, well organised, and interesting. All very gratifying! The library person left me with the challenge of coming up with another slant to make the presentation different enough to get away with doing it again (smile)." **How I Found Radiant Recovery ** Hi, I'm Karen from New Hampshire, I did the whole Sugar Addicts Program about 7 years ago, from step 1 - step 7. I felt better with each step, and was overanxious to get to the next step. So while some of the steps became stable parts of my life, some didn't and I soon found that the program wasn't working the way it did in the beginning. One slip led to two, and seven years later I'm ready to start over again and take it slowly. I'm on step four now - eat a potato at bedtime - and find that I still struggle with journaling. Some of the steps stuck with me from the first time I did this, like breakfast with protein and not eating white food. Some didn't, like keeping a journal and eating a potato at night. Like Sarah, I've read the book so many times I have it memorized. This time I'm being patient while my body changes with each step. **********************************************************************
** Radiant Recovery® Store ** David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son. This morning I started a new journal. Of course I use Your Body Speaks. I couldn't help myself. I have to give you a personal blow by blow. The cover is heavier and the pages are bright white with heavier paper. No dog ears for us now! And it has this gorgeous spiral binding. I know, I know you can think I am nuts, but these things make me excited. So I decided to go through it as if it was the first time. Here is what I found:
Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better. **********************************************************************
**Radiant Kitchen ** CHEESE BLINTZES
Mix together all filling ingredients. With each blintz, put about 2 T. of filling in the middle of the golden brown side. To roll up, fold up the bottom over the filling, then fold in the left and right sides and continue to roll up from the bottom to the top. These can be eaten cold or fried in a little butter and served warm. For more great program-friendly recipes, check out our cookbook in the store and visit our online Radiant Recipes site. **********************************************************************

**Our Online Groups ** Introduction to Radiant Cooking is a group for people in all stages of the program who want to explore new ways of cooking. We have people who have cooked little in the past, but want to begin preparing their own meals so that they can be sure of having delicious, program friendly food. There are also people who have always been good cooks, but are now fixing different kinds of foods. We gather around a virtual kitchen table, with a nice cup of tea and our questions and ideas. People bring experiments, successes, and suggestions. It's a great place to ask what to do with a food you haven't tried before! Or, to tell us what you found to do with it. We love to hear everyone's ideas and success stories! **********************************************************************
**What Makes a Difference ** Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.
I wrote this when I was in Maine for a summer visit. I still love it and think it is timely for today. It is very still in Maine on this island. It is rainy and foggy today. I am sitting looking at the trees. I can hear gulls and a lobster boat going across the cove. I have been doing a lot of reflection. Why is it that some folks come to the program, do the food and find their lives changed? And others play with it, poke around, do a little here and there, and then go away and say it doesn't work? Or do step one for two years and wonder why life is not better? Why do some decide to rewrite it, adapt it, take only what they like and throw the rest away? What makes the difference? I am thinking that there are three key things:
When you find it takes time, you get bored, frustrated, angry, inattentive or sloppy. You blame the program for not meeting your needs. Or it is too confusing so you stop and say that didn't work. And you go do a real diet. But there are others who say, 'Yes, this is for me' and they believe it, they do it and it works. What is that about? What happens? Where does that first trust and commitment come from? It is funny to think this, but I think ultimately, it is an act of faith. With a regular diet, you can pick or choose. There are thousands of them. If one doesn't work, you just try another. This silly program is different. It's so simple, it is so deceptive. It asks you to put aside what you have been taught. It asks you to do maintenance first. No glamour, no quick results, no hype. It says what you need to heal is here. If you want to use it, you can. Doesn't have to cost anything. You don't need a doc or to pay thousands of dollars. Doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, or smart or not, or living in a family. If you do it, your life will change. As I wrote this in the morning fog, I started to laugh because the simplicity of this message goes way beyond the food. I have a spiritual guide. Every morning I meditate and read from her work. This was yesterday's reading: If however, instead of being desires, they are aspirations for spiritual things, and one continues her life with regular progress, then one is absolutely sure to one day obtain what she has imagined. I think that the struggle with 'doing the food' mirrors the struggle for a spiritual life. Trusting, committing, doing. Somehow this makes me laugh. I work so hard to complicate things. I thrash around, question, argue, insist that I know better and then I say the 'program' doesn't work. This time in Maine is about quieting, living into the stillness, letting simplicity help me trust, help me recommit. It makes me remember the 'absolute trust in the supreme wisdom of the divine that it knows better than we do what is good for me.' Thanks for reading!
