February 11, 2013

Hi {!firstname_fix}

February is a long month. We are yearning for spring. Earlier light in the morning is a blessing. I can feel the trees starting to hum. I feel this same energy in the community. We have new people who are feeling the energy under all the words - this willingness to do things differently, to listen, to read chat and experience the process we are weaving.

Someone sent me a blog post about a very famous author getting on the sugar band wagon because she had read one of the take sugar out now! books. It was very hard for me to hear. It felt like the diet ads on TV - magic results, just stop it, and all those promises. And here we are moving along under the radar, one choice at a time, saying *I am willing to be patient. I am willing to look at the bigger picture. I am willing to heal the biochemistry.*

I have thought a lot about the *why* of my irritation about that event. And, in all honesty, I have to report that my food has been a little edgy. I am exercising way more and I am not sure I have increased my food to carry it. That little *dip* equates to irritation and feeling irked by glamour *winning*. Then when I write that out, I am laughing. Isn't that just what we are learning - this willingness to simply learn how to do it better every day, to trust that how grace might unfold this story is her way, not mine.

So I will do regular life…and watch for the clues.

These classes will begin Wednesday, February 13, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1

Step 1 (2 weeks) - is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.
Brain Chemistry: Serotonin (2 weeks) - is the other of our most popular classes. It helps you make sense of why the potato works, why you have a problem in the winter and how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can play into this. If you munch in your mind, if you are depressed or edgy or feel sad, this is the class for you.

These classes will begin Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 2

Step 2: Introduction (2 weeks) - will teach you the basics of journaling. The class will give you step by step instructions in how to record your food and feelings in a way that gets you excited.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,

The fun thing will be to see how your feelings emerge as you do the program.

**Testimonial of the Week **

I have been off sugar again, working all the steps for a month now and am feeling better and am starting to lose weight again. I can feel it in my clothes. I have been doing water exercise 3 times a week and am doing a muscle strength range of motion class where we use free weights and resistance bands. Those bands can really give you a workout. I have to do it all while sitting in a chair but this class is designed for folks like me. I took the RR class, Clearing All That Stuff, and I have continued to work on de-cluttering projects at least 15 minutes a day. I see small increments of progress in the area of getting rid of and organizing papers. It is nice to see progress even if it is small.

**Radiant Ambassadors **

Selena head shot

Has anyone been on the Radiant Recovery Facebook page recently? It's absolutely buzzing!

On the strength of me posting on the RR page, one of my friends (who I don't see that often and doesn't know about RR) has just joined the Radiant Recovery Facebook group. :)

So another seed planted maybe?

Let's share! You never know who might be listening!

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hello,

I read, a lot. I also happen to work in an elementary school as a librarian, although my certificate says ‘Library Operations Assistant’... but I digress. I found the Potatoes not Prozac book under my friend’s stairs... in her new house, unfinished basement, on a ‘pile ‘o’ stuff. (1999, 2000? Not sure.) I asked her if I could borrow it and I read it. And, how wild is this... Kathleen Desmaisons wrote a book about me, without ever having met me!

If I can survive my menopausal mood dips, I think I can survive anything!

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

Here is a note that Karen sent from England. For those of you who live overseas, we can help. If you have any questions, just email me. My job is to make you happy.

Ranch looks great!

The store .... well I wanted to share this. I live in England and realised I was about to run out of protein powder. So I ordered from 3 places on the same day thinking one would arrive shortly. Well, the Restore arrived the same day as the protein powder I ordered by phone from a UK store (5 days including a weekend), and the online order of protein powder from a UK site still hasn't arrived. Plus price wise - including shipping - it worked out to be comparable. A huge thumbs up to the store and David.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

Yam Cakes #1

Cook up your sweet potatoes (yams are so much easier to say, but we don’t get true yams), and mush them up. Add some oil (I use coconut oil), and about the same amount of rolled oats as you have of yams. I’ll use a cup of yams as an example. So you take your cup of yams, cup of oats, blurp of oil, and about 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ginger, shredded coconut, and mix them all together. You want it to hold together, and be nice and sticky, so add water if you need to.

I then use a scoop, and make little mounds, but flatten them with a fork. Bake at 400* for about 15 to 20 minutes. I freeze these, and take them out as needed…they are yummy cold and yummy hot, and they don’t crumble, and don’t get mushy, and travel well!

Using peanut butter instead of the oil is yummy. And I bet you could experiment and use different spices…for variety.

Enjoy!
Colette

Yam Cakes #2

I bake a bunch of large yams all at once, slip them out of the skins, and freeze in 3 Cup containers. (I use sweet potatoes a lot, LOL — not just for yam cakes!)

When I’m ready to make yam cakes I thaw a 3-cup container of sweet potato, add a bit of water and warm slightly in the microwave, then mash them. I use a hand held potato masher, but you could use a food processor or whatever suits you.

I add 3 cups of quick-cooking rolled oats, 1 cup of Restore protein powder and 1 cup of PB. I also add some more water, about 1/3-1/2 of a cup (I used a total of 1/2 cup of water), to get a sticky, goopy, but partly pourable consistency. Press into a lightly greased 9 X 13 pan and bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

Cool and cut into 32 squares. Store in fridge or freezer. My math showed that 5 squares had about a one cup serving of brown and about 19 grams of protein.

**Radiant YLD **

On the YLD list at the beginning of the year we posted some New Year Nano's, just small things we wanted to commit to doing, either with our food or with movement. I can't believe a whole month has passed and we have been reviewing our commitments and thinking about new ones. It was so inspiring to read how folk have been consistent and are seeing the results. Why not start today? I love that it doesn't have to be New Year :)

**Our Online Groups **

The radiantrecovery list was set up as a support for people who are in recovery for alcohol and/or drugs and would like to add the Radiant Recovery nutritional piece to their healing. Our approach to recovery encourages the use of 12-step programs and Radiant Recovery. I have heard from a lot of people who have many years of sobriety in AA but have just recently come across Radiant Recovery. Won't you come and join us over on the recovery list to learn how to integrate sobriety and doing the food steps? If you want the promises to come in a way you have not imagined, it is a great time to come over. And if you aren't sure, but think alcohol might be a problem for you, we are here to support that exploration as well. The folks on the list are warm, compassionate, caring and straightforward. So we would love to have you come join us.

**Some Thoughts on Well-Being **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I have been reading some research material from the American Psychological Society and thought it would be fun to talk some about some of what I am reading. Much of this material is more academic than excites me. But there was a scale of "psychological well being" that I found intriguing. It measures self-acceptance, positive relations, purpose in life, environmental mastery, personal growth and autonomy.

These sound a lot like what happens as people do the food. So now I am thinking what fun it would be if we began to have a dialogue on our forum and lists about what it is that happens with the food. I am going to start by sharing what I notice.
  • Blame and entitlement shift to taking responsibility and humility.
  • Despair shifts to hopefulness.
  • Anger shifts to humor.
  • Inadequacy shifts to empowerment.
  • Isolation shifts to connection.
  • Arguing changes to sharing.
  • Denial moves to disclosure.
When I started, I thought it was about healing depression and addiction. I thought we were creating a health system. I had no idea what else would come. I thought the changes I experienced, all of the above and more, were personal things coming from my own journey. But as time passed, it seems that these changes come with the territory. They are developmentally predictable and way more universal than I ever imagined.

Doing the food changes something profound. It is as if it resets us to a state of openness - open heart ready for healing. And then all the other stuff we all do has a place to sit. I often use the image of a cracked bowl. We can fill it a thousand times, spend a lifetime trying and we still are empty. If we fix the crack, we get filling up and spilling over.

This community, this website is made possible by the tireless work of close to 50 volunteers. They are spilling over and share the recovery, the radiance that doing the food has brought them. Go read their stories if you want to know what is in store. And come share your stories as well.

Thanks for reading! If you know someone who could benefit from this, feel free to forward it to them.
