December 31, 2012 Hi {!firstname_fix} I have always loved this quiet time between Christmas and New Year's. The sleigh with the retriever in it and the reindeer are down from the roof, but I have kept the electronic candles in the windows. I have taken the tree down and in honor of the Clutter class, I bought new containers for all the ornaments. Everything is wrapped in tissue and good heavens, MARKED, before being put away. While my handyman was here for the reindeer, he also secured the front fence for Miss Marti Houdini. We have a running bet on how long it will take for her to master leaping over it. It is a time for much reflection. We are working on a special web edition for parents of troubled kids, a revision of YLD, and some upgrades on the website. My office has different color-coded stacks for each. You will see things rolling out as we go. This class will begin Wednesday, January 2, 2012. **Testimonial of the Week ** I just posted on the step 2 list that today is my 12 year anniversary of doing the food. I bought 4 or 5 books on eliminating sugar from my diet and decided I'd better get to reading SARP on 12/28/00 as I only had a few days left before I was going to eliminate sugar on 1/2/01. LOL I devoured SARP and my chocolate stash and decided that I was ready for detox--I already kept a food log, I already ate breakfast everyday about 3 hours after I got up, I already ate 3 meals a day with protein (I was trying to do low carb, but couldn't stick to it) so I just needed to add in browns, I already took vitamins and could just add in the potato 3 hours after dinner, so voila, ready for detox, right? LOL Detox was so horrible I refused to go back to eating sugar. It took about 6 months for my biochemistry to catch up with my enthusiasm as I visited each step with beginner's mind. I spent a lot of that time angry, frustrated and irritated. I was envious of others who did the program slowly as written. I wore my detox as a badge of honor at my strength and a badge of shame that I didn't do it right. I would say it took me a lot longer than 6 months to learn what was embedded in each step and quite honestly I'm still learning. I so appreciate Kathleen and her work for giving me a life. I may not always know what to do with it, but at least now I know it's mine and it is not ruled by my biochemistry--at least not when I'm doing the food. Thank you to her and everyone in the community for helping me along my path. Terri **********************************************************************

**How I Found Radiant Recovery ** Hello everybody! I am Norma and I live in Los Angeles, CA. I had connected with a diet coach online and she told me about the Potatoes Not Prozac book a couple of weeks ago. I am just trying to settle down and start the program now. The book really speaks to me, so I hope I just start listening! and I hope I am replying in the right place! **********************************************************************
** Radiant Recovery® Store ** David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son. My posting about our new special *double* tracking system for journaling a couple of weeks ago was so successful that I thought I would put it in again.

**Radiant Kitchen ** Humus Ingredients:
Combine all ingredients in a food processor, adding enough water to make a smooth paste. Cover and set aside. Tabouli Ingredients:
In a smaller bowl, squeeze the lemons and add as much olive oil as there is lemon juice. Add salt (another 1/2 to 1 t. or so) and fresh ground pepper (I like a lot). Stir it up and pour over the ingredients in the big bowl. Snap on the cover and shake like crazy; get everything really mixed up. To serve, spread some humus in a bowl and top with tabbouli. You can eat it right away (I always do), but it’s best after a few hours, when all the ingredients have had a chance to meet each other. Feel free to toy with the ingredient’s list until you’ve created your perfect dish. This recipe was contributed by Kris from the Radiant Recovery Community Forum. **Our Online Groups ** The radiantrecovery list was set up as a support for people who are in recovery for alcohol and/or drugs and would like to add the Radiant Recovery nutritional piece to their healing. So we would love to have you come join us. **********************************************************************
**The Law of Threes ** Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.
I love posting this at New year's. I always use it to plan for the *new*… I have updated it for 2013. I have often been asked why I don't provide a whole list of supplements. "Why only three, Kathleen?" I operate under The Law of Threes. (I made it up.) I firmly believe that we sugar sensitive people have "Mush brains." We are smart and intuitive but we have a very hard time "remembering" what we are supposed to do. However, I have found that I can easily remember three things. Three key issues (blood sugar, serotonin, beta endorphin), three meals, three vitamins. I thought it would be a good idea to put The Law of Threes to use. Every year between my birthday in late November and Christmas, I begin thinking about the year completed and the year to come. Where have I been, where do I want to grow and what will it take to get there? In the past, I would write out many goals. Once I even bought one of those expensive planning systems which provided space in my appointment book to see how I was progressing with each goal. I think we had seven areas to work with. But after about two weeks, my enthusiasm petered out. I couldn't remember everything I was supposed to be doing, so I simply stopped doing any of it. Sounds like a sugar sensitive person, don't you think? Then I started working with The Law of Threes. I could remember three things. The idea grew with me. It simplifies and focuses my direction. My goals:
I majored in philosophy in college. It is easy for me to conceptualize global ideas. So even though there are only three goals, they still seemed to be pretty abstract. So I said, "Okay, Kathleen, what do you mean? Let's get concrete and specific, here." It was fun to tag each goal to a very specific area - making it do-able. So I got to pick three applications for my three goals. Here is what I chose:
I was getting closer. But what do "food, money and exercise" mean? Back to the drawing board I went. Remember now, I was still working with The Law of Threes, so I didn't let myself start making up lists. Oh, I wanted to. I wanted lists big time. All the things I would do with my food, all the strategies with money, and many, many options for exercise. But I held my pen and worked on holding my brain. I admit that I kept wanting to drift off in wild reflection... "Well, you could do this...." "Three, you get to choose three," I told myself. So I went back to my little grid (you know I love those grids)! It made me laugh.
This wasn't cosmic. I just have to worry about three specific jobs: Weight loss food. Taxes on time. Do it. Of course there will be other things I have to figure out in order to manage these three. I will have to watch the time, go grocery shopping, decide what to cook when, what to eat. But I can just keep the focus on the end task - eat three meals every day. The same is true for paying my taxes on time. I have to remember to get everything up to date, enter the numbers in Quicken, run reports, and get over to my accountant. You know the drill. We tend to drift and then we get in trouble. La-La land I call this. In the past, when I hit La-La land, I would get upset and feel badly, and then would have to avoid those feelings by not doing anything. Now my pattern is to stay focused on what is manageable. Pay the bills on time. Eat three meals. Exercise. The end of the story? If I do my three things, I will get to my goals. See if you can boil down what you want for next year into three things. Get real simple and real focused and see how it goes. Thanks for reading! If you know someone who could benefit from this, feel free to forward it to them. Not a subscriber yet?
