July 16, 2012 Hi {!firstname_fix} I have been doing some major housekeeping with program stuff. I have been struggling with doing classes for a while. I just couldn't find the way to *track* which classes were happening when. I felt really badly about this because I knew that it was affecting the quality of how I was working with you. And as I am sure you all know, when we struggle with an inadequacy, sometimes the default reaction is to not take care of it. And of course not taking care of it only makes it worse, LOL. Anyway, there have been a few other places in my life where that pattern of not holding details was going on. I just decided to start working with them and get some support for it. Adding in support time meant I needed to pay attention to my time better and I needed to have a clear calendar so I knew what was happening when. I do vision really well, but sometimes the details of daily life have been really, really hard. Since I am a Mac girl, I do have all sorts of computer tools right at my fingers. I decided to actually use iCal to plan my days. iCal has color coding so....that is like gel pens, LOL. Blue for Radiant Recovery commitments, green for my 12 step work, purple for Golden Retriever Rescue, red for personal [yes, indeed, I do have personal thingies], and then this thought struck me. Put the classes in, Kathleen!! So, PINK for classes. And I can set them to repeat daily for the duration of the class....and....I can put in the URL of the class at Yahoo. All of a sudden, they are there, joyfully waiting for me to make the connection. Pink! Actually it is sort of a fuchsia pink so it just makes me smile and I am LOVING clicking on the little pink bar to go PLAY, or talk about SEROTONIN. What was such a source of angst has become a joy dot. The colors have also made me think about balance in my life. It was a little, shall we say, sobering, to see the proportion of work to play. Not good. So the calendar has become a conversation for my recovery. And a way to assess the *value* of those things on it. I am just a little color puppy. But I sure am happy. And I suspect all you little class takers will be a whole lot more happy. And I am designing some new classes for you as part of my restitution. (smile) If you are a member of Radiant Conversations and come to chat, please make sure to read the note below about a time change. These classes will begin Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

** Quote From Kathleen ** One of the markers for your own progress is the respect you command from those around you about your food habits. **********************************************************************
** Testimonial of the Week ** Sorry to be late responding - I have been getting the newsletter for many years now. It is the reason I came back. Reading Kathleen's piece every week or so has kept me believing in the program even when I just couldn't follow any of it. So i vote that you subscribe! ;) Best, Molly **********************************************************************
** Radiant Ambassadors ** Lauren shared some exciting news about how she has been talking about Radiant Recovery. "Hello, I just had some great news to share! In the past I would talk to people about RR but for some reason they wouldn't listen. I was beginning to get a little discouraged because of my strong desire to help others in my same situation--"Why don't they hear me?" I wondered. Maybe they sensed my own lack of stability at the time and so were not open to my "methods". LoL. "Anyway, I have been stable for a while and have gained the courage to share RR with others again. Lo and behold, two women in my Bible study group are buying the books (one is already reading)! I am thrilled! Just knowing they have a chance to experience the blessings that I have received gives me joy. "Also there is a recovery group in my church for people who are (or know someone who is) struggling with addiction. I plan on meeting with the people who run the group and asking them if I could give my RR testimony to a whole room full of people who need it the most! My hope is that eventually we SS people in the church will have enough success to be able to speak out even more widely about PnP (or YLD, etc) and affect many people's lives for the better. "What a fun way to pay it forward!" Lauren This whole post makes me smile - talk about sharing the power of the program! Well done Lauren!! ** How I Found Radiant Recovery ** Hi everyone, I know I am probably the last one to join in to the group. My name is Debbie, and I live in Sugar Grove, IL. After eating Halloween candy, Easter candy, cookies, ice cream, etc, etc I know I need help! I am out of hand. I learned about the group through research on the web. I have purchased the books, and I am trying to eat more protein with breakfast. I also am a vegetarian, and I want to make some moves into a healthy life. I have one son (10 years), and I want him to grow up without any addictions. Thank You, Debbie **********************************************************************
** Radiant Recovery® Store ** David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.
Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better. **********************************************************************
** Radiant Kitchen **
Spray an 8' x 8' pan with cooking spray. Spread the mixture out evenly in the pan. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. Cut into granola bars. Makes 8 – 10 bars. Note: This recipe can be doubled, using a 9' x 13' pan.
Toss the oats, coconut and almonds together in a large bowl. Pour the vegetable oil and apple juice over the oat mixture. Add the cinnamon, and stir with a wooden spoon until all the oats and nuts are coated with the liquids. Pour onto a sheet pan. Bake, stirring occasionally with a spatula, until the mixture turns a nice, even golden brown, about 25 to 30 minutes. Remove the granola from the oven and allow to cool, stirring occasionally. Store the cooled granola in an airtight container. ** Radiant YLD ** We have been having some wonderful conversations about what it is that makes YLD so much fun. I have been thinking we should call it Your Laughing Diet to more accurately describe what happens. Ironically, the more we laugh, the more successful people are being with their plans. Bodies are changing, pounds are dropping, exercise is flowing. But we keep forgetting to talk about all that because we are having so much fun. I was saying, but how am I going to market this? I can't just say, come laugh with us. We need *before* and after pictures... How can we show grim to grin, seriousness to irreverence. How can we capture the impact of joy on problem solving. Mostly because the *problems* are no longer problems, they go away. Then we have these joyful solutions that in the desperate times simply felt impossible. Come laugh with us. If you would like to join, come find us here **********************************************************************
** Radiant Conversations ** We have a new portal for the Conversations program. Come check it out here. So, if you are tired of talking about the steps or food, and wanna talk about dogs or cats or the stars or life or joy dots, this is the place. Conversations is like a British pub - where people meet to catch up, to laugh. Yah, yah I know some drink too...but we only have tea. And, in fact, sometimes we actually stop for tea because we are laughing too hard. And if you think chat will be hard because you are an introvert, please note that the whole group are introverts. Except for me, LOL. This means that when they get started, they just buzz with fun and I am the one that has to call for a tea break. Now, one reminder... The USA/Downunder time is changing to TUESDAY evening at 6:30 MDT. I have NO idea what time that is in NZ or Australia, LOL, but it is the exact same time it was on Monday. CHANGE YOUR CALENDARS. Note the only change is for our evening chat. Euro conversations will stay on Monday. ** Our Online Groups ** The Radiantdepression group is all about support for the person who is depressed and trying to work the 7-step program of recovery from sugar addiction. Many of us have struggled with severe depression for years without any hope of finding an end to it. But through doing the food we have found that hope returning and have found light where before there was only darkness. Some of us are taking anti-depressants while doing the food, so we talk about how the two are compatible and we also share about getting through the tough spots together, with support from each other. If you are feeling depressed please come join us. There is hope. **********************************************************************
**Following the Rules ** Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.
Hi folks, you know I sent out a letter asking for your input. One interesting thing came up. I got some inquiries from folks who said they have been doing everything *perfectly* and were disenchanted with the program because they hadn't lost weight. So I want to talk about this. Sometimes, I get a sense of people following the rules and doing it perfectly. Everything. But it doesn't include the listening to your body, the mucking around that makes the program become your own. You see there isn't a *perfectly* in this program. There is simply a committed, not a perfect way. Committed means you show up when you are discouraged. You show up when you are still fat and you think you have tried everything. You show up with a beginner's mind and you say, "What does my body say here? What needs to change? What have I tried? Why did it work for a while? What changed?" Committed means you ask the people you trust to help you see things you can't because you are in the middle of it. This is a big one. SS people are not team players. We think we know better. We know how to beat the diets. We ask for *advice*. But not for counsel. And then we ignore it. Or we fail to ask the ultimate authority - our own body. We say, "Still fat!!! You slug...." and go off and do Atkins. I can't tell you how many letters I have gotten about knowing that Atkins will work and then I will be back. So what *is* this program anyway? It is accepting on faith something that is so radical, so different from anything we have ever done. Trusting the voices of those who have done it longer. Not done it perfectly, not finished, not all fixed, but those who have hung in there, who are open and willing and are connected. Those who give back. Those who have learned that the heart of the program comes in service. Sitting with one more frightened, tired newbie in despair. Or sitting with an old timer who crashed and burned and wants to bail with every molecule of who she is. Or being patient with the one in the middle who is bored and disenchanted. Rules don't work for that. Heart does. Honesty and tenacity does. Now here is the bottom line. For some folks the losing weight part is easy. It comes, it works and life is changed. For others, it is a bear. You will go though everything I have written and found you are not losing weight. And then, you decide whether you pitch it because *it* doesn't work or you stay in there as we find out. We don't have all the answers by a long shot. We are living the solutions. And the edge of our story is pushed out by those of you who are stubborn losers way more than by the success stories. I don't know if this is making sense. Maybe I am just moved by all those letters you wrote me. But what I CAN tell you - Kathleen is in for the long haul. There are some things I do not know, actually LOTS of things I have not a clue about. I don't know why some of you get stuck. It may be that you haven't done the package, it may be that this package is not the one for your body. It may be that your leptin is inadequate or your delta 5 desaturase in underactive. But I do know, if you stick with it, you will be able to hang in there and keep pluggin away and having fun along the way. I am going to. So I hope you don't follow the rules, but you find the program. Thanks for reading! If you know someone who could benefit from this, feel free to forward it to them. Not a subscriber yet?
