January 16, 2021

Hi {!firstname_fix}

I got a cold on my trip so I have remembered hot chicken soup, scrambled eggs and English muffins and hot water with lemon. I slept a lot and simply accepted that my brain simply would not work.

I also started my painting class. Here is the person I am studying with:

Carol Carpenter Watercolors

I will have more to say in this week's article about what this is touching in me and what it is related to our work together.

These classes will begin Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 2 Journal: Introduction (2 weeks) - will teach you the basics of journaling. The class will give you step-by-step instructions in how to record your food and feelings in a way that gets you excited.

Step 3 (2 weeks) - is one of our core classes. This is a skill-based class. If you want to learn the baby steps of a successful step 3, come join us. This class is ALWAYS fun.

These classes will begin Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Using Radiant Resources (2 weeks) - is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double-decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.

Step 4 (2 weeks) - is the potato class. Come learn everything you ever wanted to know about the timing, size, frequency of your potato. Learn about the best vitamins and talk all you want about them. This is a nice way to strengthen and refine your step 4.

Anxiety (2 weeks) - will deal with biochemistry of anxiety, panic and phobia and will discuss ways to heal using the steps and other behavioral modifications.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

** Testimonial of the Week **

*Body slept peacefully waking to the rising sun and my cuddly Golden Retrievers
*Shake filled my stomach getting ready to go to the gym and preparing her
*Lips smiling into a gentle warm smile as I felt this aha moment

****************************************************************************

radiantkd:
start being in joy with your body

radiantkd:
being fat is neutral

This is a quote from the US chat this last week. As I read it I had an aha.

I've been here in RR since the year 2000. For many many many of those years I hated my body. I hated my stomach, my neck, etc. And I was overweight. And the solution I kept trying was eat less, exercise more, cut out, try to do the food tweaked (LOL), etc. And even during times I could lose weight I never felt sane. I never felt whole. And my thoughts about my body were still the same whether I was overweight or not overweight. I remember with my body issue and ED stuff, I'd see myself in the mirror looking 300 pounds heavier than I actually was, and it was truth for me. I was not in joy with my body.

So....

As I was reading these two sentences from Kathleen in chat, it was like I can now see why things are working now where they didn't before.

And it all began with being all right (not just all right but in joy) with my body. I did the food (miracles upon miracles, yes, that is where it begins, LOL). And my stomach was no longer hated. I could see the real me in the mirror. I think what happened was I "came into" my body. I know that sounds so odd, but I think all those years I was standing outside of my body, so to speak, but when I entered in and embraced her, we became "one".

And it is in this embracing and oneness that I now have been able to exercise and lose weight coming from a totally different place; an inside place, not outside myself.

I hope this makes sense. It is a huge aha for me this morning. And man, it makes me smile.

And now it is time to head out to the gym, oh precious body. :)

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

I heard about The Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program in early 2001, I don't remember where. I had received some cash for a Christmas gift and went straight out to buy the book. There was a blurb about Radiant Recovery in the book and a year later when we got cable internet and I got brave enough to touch the computer the first site I went to was this one. I learned how to do breakfast correctly and I've been reading the forum ever since.

** Radiant Kitchen **

When I was in Vermont visiting my daughter, I bought some Cabot Cheddar cheese. It is totally yummy and I used it to make this. I actually put it in a casserole dish and baked it a bit at 350 after I mixed it so the edges got a little crispy. This dish is good cold too. If you can't find Tinkyada, you can order it on Amazon.

MACARONI AND CHEESE

  • 16 oz. elbow macaroni, cooked (I use Tinkyada Brown rice macaroni elbows)

  • 2 cups milk

  • 4 tbsp. butter

  • 4 tbsp. flour (wheat, spelt, brown rice) I use brown rice flour

  • 2 cups medium or sharp cheddar cheese
Cook macaroni according to package directions. In a saucepan, melt butter and add flour, whisking to form a roux. Slowly add milk, whisking to avoid lumps and thicken. Add cheese, a little at a time, until thoroughly mixed and melted. Add additional milk, if needed, to attain desired consistency.

Immediately add to macaroni and serve.

** Our Online Groups **

The Step 3 list is a great place to stop by for those who are finding this a challenging step, or who are starting out or who would just like some extra support. We talk a lot about things like: What is a meal, exactly? How do I get my body to cooperate with eating "just" three meals a day? What are some tips to help me with consistent timing? And all sorts of other aspects of this step. We try to make it fun, because... well why not make it fun?? I've been thrilled to see so many people come through and "graduate" to the next steps! It's a great place of support... come and join us! (And it matters not if you are new to the step, totally re-doing the step or just shoring up your Step 3 after being further along in the program.)

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Beginner's Mind **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

As you know, I have started in a new class to learn to do watercolor. I attended the first class last week. I am a rank beginner and know nothing. This is an unusual place to be in. I realize that as we get older, we generally don’t have a lot of total beginner experiences. The process is making me VERY sympathetic to new people who come into our program.

I don’t have the skills. I don’t have the “gear” yet. I don’t know where to sit. I don’t know the language. I didn’t realize I needed to bring something to put water in, or a rag to clean up stuff. I got everything she told me to get, but she forgot some stuff that is on the website list, LOL.

I decided it didn’t matter. If I knew what to do, I wouldn’t be in the class. So I LISTENED, really, really listened. And I watched her demo. I quickly learned that she totally knows what she is talking about. Thirty years experience, she knows how to paint. It really moved me. I thought, she knows as much about her craft as I do about mine. Pay attention, girl, I said to myself.

I realized that she was thrilled to have us there. Genuinely. She loves sharing her passion and she had no judgment at all for our groping first attempts to put color on paper. She just was having fun with our joy at being there.

The woman next to me is new too. She was trying to make flowers but they were a little flat. Carol came over and asked her, “May I?” and took the brush, dipped it in paint and made one tiny stroke. It was maybe 1/4 inch long. But it was breathtaking. It made the flower come alive. She didn’t talk or explain, she just did it. I watched with my jaw on the floor.

I thought about the conversations we have about Kathleen being “curt” and I think my comments are like that tiny brush stroke. Thirty years of experience. Thirty years of practice. And then feelings get hurt, you get stung, feel criticized, overwhelmed and all that. And I mean this tenderly. Yah gotta stop that (smile)…this is about working with someone who knows the brush stokes, how to create what you came to learn.

Had I sat there and if it were my picture she had done that little movement on, would I have felt stung or inadequate? Hardly. I would have thought, “Whew, baby! I want what she has!” And I would be showing up, mucking up, doing it wrong, but reading the books, watching You Tube and going to the gallery and looking at all her paintings…how does she do light, how does she create shadows, how does she make sky, where did the purple come from?

After the first hour of the class, my brain stopped. I couldn’t learn any more. So I just watched and listened. This weekend, I was thinking about how to do some ebay stuff to generate the money to keep doing these classes. I think I am tapping into a joy dot that I only heard in the distance. It is beyond anything I imagined.

So, welcome to all our newcomers!!
