September 12, 2011

Hi {!firstname_fix}

I am writing on 9/11. This morning, I happened to turn on the TV and hit the History channel. They were playing a special on the events of 9/11. I suspect that for most of us, that day was so horrific that we simply had to put it away. Ten years later, perhaps we have the ability to grieve differently. There was an image of hundreds of firemen arriving on the scene, suited up, with their gear walking toward the tower. This is the best of what men do, honorable men, in service to saving lives, suiting up and going into hell. And then fast forward to a group of them after the second tower had just fallen, in shock, knowing the tragedy of the 300 chirping place-finders in the rubble. I wept, I wept like I was unable to do 10 years ago because my brain could not make sense of the devastation.

Somehow to me, I know that it is doing the food, and being in the community that gives me the ability to weep and go on. Later in the morning I sat in Starbucks with a friend and his 7-month-old baby who was watching Old MacDonald's cows on his Daddy's Ipad. I came home and my two naughty dogs had taken the carton of eggs off the counter and decided it was a treasure for them to eat. This is regular life. All morning, I have been thinking about how we remember those whose lives were and are still crushed by pain.

I think perhaps the way I do that is to suit up and show up, even if I do not know where it will lead. To maintain my belief that the world is an all-right place to be and that hope can be restored. I also preordered the book, Rescued, about the dogs who were there at the scene.

Thank you for bearing with me and my musing on this sad day.

If you slip, don't spend a lot of time or energy beating yourself up. Just pick up the program and get going again.

** Testimonial of the Week **

I'm new to this list and have enjoyed taking classes and joining each step list as I've been journeying with RR.

I came into the program with most covert sugars removed due to a year-long online program offered by my health care professional. Even so, as I started with Step 1, I listened and learned in each step while freely using candy (addiction which began in childhood). I have spent a little over a month on each step and actually started working on Step Six several weeks ago when I began to diminish the portion of my overt sugar use at dinner time. I also use sugar at lunchtime and plan to work with that target after the dinnertime use is deleted.

Just as I have joined this list, I am diagnosed with a nasty gastro bacteria requiring a high-powered antibiotic that's rather gnarly on the gut so I plan to read and listen while I remain in a sort of holding pattern until I make it through the med cycle. I'm babying me with extra browns and lots of resting/naps.

I'm confident that all will be well soon but I know that I know, for me, it's time to maintain where I'm at until I regain my intestinal equilibrium.

Thanks for listening. Peace and Goodness to All,
Beckita

** Radiant Ambassadors **

A couple of months ago I wrote to Claire Richards, a member of the pop group Steps (you may not know them in the US, but they were quite big in the UK!). She had been featured in a magazine article posing tastefully with no clothes on showing the weight she had gained after bingeing. I really felt for her.

Anyway, I didn't receive a response, but that's ok, someone somewhere read it.

It now seems that there is a new television documentary coming out about her and her constant 'battle' with food. I understand it's about trying to help her to figure out *why* she binges. Well, if it's anything like I used to be then it's probably down to sugar sensitivity and a wonky biochemistry - I've been there, done that, bought the t-shirts.

I think I'm going to write to her again.

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

I'm Loretta. I'm originally from London, England, but I now live in Lanzarote off the coast of Africa. I am single, with no children, unless you count my cat. I have been living an emotional rollercoaster ride for more years than I remember and on recounting my experiences to an internet friend, she told me about RR and that I should get the book PnP. Surprisingly, I remember having this book when it first came out, but I obviously didn't follow it and here I am today, with my new copy in hand.

I have been non-stop bingeing and eating compulsively for the last few months and so now I'm just going to focus on breakfast. It seems a little tricky and I must admit that I'm a little worried about calculating grams of protein and weighing my food, as I don't want to become any more obsessed with the food than I already am. However, I'm going to give this programme 110% as life should be about living and I'm not doing much of that these days.

Looking forward to getting to meet you all and hopefully there'll be an exchange of ideas for breakfasts too!!!

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

So many of you have been asking about the Safe Place CD, we decided to feature it this week. I originally did this meditation when I was working in a prison in RI thirty years ago. At that time, I used a rendition of Bolero done by Daniel Kolbialka. When I wanted to make a recording of the meditation, I needed to get permission and licensing from him to do so. That took a couple of years. So in 2009, I recorded our original edition of the Safe Place meditation and Patti Holden provided a musical composition for the background.

After that, I did get licensing from Kolbialka and we transitioned over to the original music that I have always used. Most people love it, and some people prefer the recording with Patti's music on it because they have an association with the Bolero rendition.

We decided to reengineer the Patti one to resolve a few blips that had happened in the original and now we are able to offer you either or both of the Safe Place meditations.

If you have previously purchased the original Safe Place recording, and would like to get an upgrade of the new one, I will provide that to you free with just the cost of shipping and handling.

And if you would like to get both renditions, I will give you special pricing.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Radiant YLD **

Last week at chats, I started to introduce the exercise component of YLD which I have been working on for the last 6 months. It is very exciting to add this last piece into the total equation. I think we now have the whole continuum covered: healing addiction, creating steady brain, healing the emotional pieces, letting go of shame, doing the food, adding in weight-loss steps and learning exercise for weight loss...and then of course doing it all (smile). There is a lot of energy flowing around in YLD these days. We would love to have you join us.

And here is an interesting thing. This week I had someone request a refund because we were not like sparkpeople - the hottest new diet program on the web these days. And I thought, yep, we sure are not like them at all. YLD is about your LAST diet. No more dieting, no more seduction, no more thinking that the number of pounds tells the real story. Yep, we want you to lose weight, but it sure is more than that.

If you would like to join, come find us here

I shared joy dots with my family and now they are all emailing joy dots to each other!

What an incredible idea. We start, we share, and it flows out. Why not try?

**The Impact of Doing the Program **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I have been reading some research material from the American Psychological Society and thought it would be fun to talk some about some of what I am reading. Much of this material is more academic than excites me. But there was a scale of "psychological well being" that I found intriguing. It measures self-acceptance, positive relations, purpose in life, environmental mastery, personal growth and autonomy.

These sound a lot like what happens as people do the food. So now I am thinking what fun it would be if we began to have a dialogue on our forum and lists about what it is that happens with the food. I am going to start by sharing what I notice.

  • Blame and entitlement shift to taking responsibility and humility.
  • Despair shifts to hopefulness.
  • Anger shifts to humor.
  • Inadequacy shifts to empowerment.
  • Isolation shifts to connection.
  • Arguing changes to sharing.
  • Denial moves to disclosure.
When I started, I thought it was about healing depression and addiction. I thought we were creating a health system. I had no idea what else would come. I thought the changes I experienced, all of the above and more, were personal things coming from my own journey. But as time passed, it seems that these changes come with the territory. They are developmentally predictable and way more universal than I ever imagined

Doing the food changes something profound. It is as if it resets us to a state of openness - open heart ready for healing. And then all the other stuff we all do has a place to sit. I often use the image of a cracked bowl. We can fill it a thousand times, spend a lifetime trying and we still are empty. If we fix the crack, we get filling up and spilling over.

This community, this website has been made possible by the tireless work of close to 50 volunteers. They have been spilling over and share the recovery, the radiance that doing the food has brought them. And something has happened now, it is no longer the *mentors*, it is all of you. ALL of you sharing your joy dots, yah!
