September 5, 2011

Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well, the news of the last week with Irene has had a huge impact on me. I will be writing about that in the article this week. Other than that, it has been a nice week. I love what is happening in the lists and the classes.

These classes will begin Wednesday, September 7, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1 (2 weeks) is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.

Using Radiant Resources (2 weeks) - is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double-decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.

The Obesity Myth (2 weeks) - is the famous class that blasted our myths about being fat from the water. If your doctor, husband, girlfriend is on your case, come join us. If you are shamed about being fat, come. If you feel that being fat is wrecking your health, come. Get the real scoop and then move forward knowing what to do. This class is ALWAYS fun.

These classes will begin Wednesday, September 14, 2011. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Brain Chemistry: Serotonin (2 weeks)is one of our most popular classes. It helps you make sense of why the potato works, why you have a problem in the winter and how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can play into this. If you munch in your mind, if you are depressed or edgy or feel sad, this is the class for you.

Step 3 (2 weeks) is one of our core classes. This is a skill-based class. If you want to learn the baby steps of a successful step 3, come join us. This class is ALWAYS fun.

Family and Friends (2 weeks) is a special class for people to explore the complexity of relationships changing in recovery.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Learning that you can have positive feelings from a thousand things other than food is a wonderful insight.

** Testimonial of the Week **

I, too, was wondering about the oat milk tasting so sweet. So it's just the nature of the oat to be sweet. Nice.

And the connection between wheat and being so sleepy. Hard to track... really need to be writing this down... but I'm not on step two so I am using scraps of paper rather than a journal.

Udi's, Ezekiel bread, quinoa... so many things to explore. Oh, and power milk.

Sam summed it up nicely re: matching decades of diet rules to step one. In the beginning I considered making a chart to see if there was one perfect food that would not disobey any of my endless collection of "no carb, food-combining, add a good fat, isolate your fruit, etc., etc." rules. It reminds me of the wayward dog who's spending a long weekend with me. He's never been off a leash and he pulls and pulls. But when I take it off, he glues himself to my side, trembling terribly. He hates that leash but (if you'll permit me to anthropomorphize here a bit) would rather go shopping for a better (perfect) leash than learn how to feel safe without one. No leash; very scary.

Food and mood - hands up who's discovered how important the connection is between them? Thought so!

Our very own Teresa discovered an article on food and mood in a national magazine the other day. It included information from a mental health charity here in the UK.

Here's the link to the section on their website which you might find interesting:

There is an option to give feedback on the content. Of course I wrote to them, how could I not?

Do feel free to add a comment about Radiant Recovery if you wish. You never know!

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi, I'm Dan and I live in Ohio. I was one of the kids who ate the cereal to get to the sugar, but sugar addiction never bothered me too much until I was much older. I've noticed that I go around a circle over several months -- eat lots of sugar, feel bad, stop, feel better for a while, then have a saltine, then more saltines, then cookies, then candy, and before I know it I'm back where I started, even though I don't want to be. Seems pretty addictive to me.

I'd like to get off this wheel, and somehow came upon Potatoes Not Prozac years ago, but have just recently started doing the steps. I've been doing breakfast for about a month and have just started tentatively journaling. I'm looking forward to learning more.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

We have been doing some updating and revising of our CDs and I thought you would love hearing about them.

We have brought back the CD called The Warrior Spirit which I did a couple of years ago. This is by popular request. A couple of you were talking about how much you loved it. You spoke, we listened.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Our Online Groups **

The radiantrecovery group was set up as a support for people who are in recovery for alcohol and/or drugs and would like to add the Radiant Recovery nutritional piece to their healing. Or it is for folks who are wanting to explore whether alcohol is a problem for them and what they might do. We talk about recovery for those of us who have a *dual* story and can work the program in a special way. The folks on the list are warm, compassionate, caring and straightforward.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**More Water Destruction **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I go to a support group early each morning. Last Monday, everyone was in such a dark mood. Usually Mondays are energetic, joyful and light. Last Monday was not. I couldn’t figure it out until about Wednesday. I realized this was collective shock once again. A tsunami in 2004, Katrina, a tsunami in 2011 and then this Hurricane. I was deeply affected by all of them, but Vermont hit the hardest.

My daughter lives in Vermont. I was sitting in Starbucks reading the Albuquerque paper in the morning and saw a picture of a town 3 feet deep in water. I thought, that looks familiar...I read the caption. It was the bigger town down the hill from Jennifer's place. Later in the day, she sent out photos that the local people had been collecting. I felt as if my home had been taken away. It was very visceral. And I know that many of you felt the effects of Irene as well.

Once again I found myself asking what can we do. In 2004, I wrote an article about Emoto in Japan and his hypothesis that prayer and good thoughts/music can change the structure of water. Since then, a lot has been published debating his claims. Most of the debunking articles talk about *bias* and that his results have not been replicated. They talk about the need for *double blind* testing.

All of that may be true... and also it may be that some things are really not about *double blind* for proof. Perhaps I am just a person willing to trust the *feeling* of knowing. But here is something interesting. One paper I read shows an image of an Ice Crystal lattice structure. I am struck at how much this structure looks like the microtubules in the brain. What it suggests to me is that we and water are more alike than we might think…sort of like being cousins. The feelings that I had were like watching my cousin get drunk and do crazy things. Scary, and destructive…and I felt helpless.

Yet something has been happening. The people of Vermont, and NC and NJ and NY and CT are simply putting lives back together. I am hearing about Vermont every day. The students from Jen’s school will go and shovel mud from the Boys' and Girls’ Club, people from high land with crops are bringing produce to those who lost everything. There are notes in the community center that say “Have” and “Need” and people are sharing.

So maybe Emoto does not have good “science” but perhaps he has good “heart” which is what creates the healing. And maybe that good heart is what can be born out of this devastation.

I think most of you have figured out that I don’t just talk about food, LOL. I think about these other things. And this week, I wanted to have you be a part of “good heart” because for me it is the point of doing the food.

love,
kathleen
