August 29, 2011 Hi {!firstname_fix} I just got back from my vacation on an island off the coast of Maine. The days were split between clear blue skies and this soft, grey fog. I actually love the fog. I think the softness enchants me. Time slowed down and the biggest event of the days was the movement of the tides. This picture is what we saw off the deck of the house we were staying in. There were 2 seagulls that my sister-in-law had befriended. They came in the morning to stay on the deck railing and discuss the day with her. And nothing like an ipad to learn all about seagull life. On Wednesday I came back to New Mexico and 100 degree heat. The skies were blue, the balloons were out in the morning and the light intense. It was a little bit of a culture shock. The dogs were thrilled to see me, they sqealed and leapt with joy. The rains came in the evening and everything cooled off. I loved my time away and I am happy to be home. There will be no classes beginning Wednesday, August 31, 2011. ** Testimonial of the Week ** Yesterday I read a post of mine in the YLD section of the newsletter about how my jeans had got loose courtesy of YLD. And basically, about how I had lost my diet head where I used to get on the scales at least 4 times a day and endlessly fret about everything food/diet/body related. These days it is a different story and I get on the scales only now and then and my weight loss is coming along nicely by itself with only the odd review from me. So I got the giggles here - I got in from work and switched on the computer to peek in while I got ready for my shower. I was so busy thinking and getting into my email that my uniform tunic was on the floor and I couldn't remember taking it off - it looked a bit funny - all sort of done up. I realised I had been on autopilot and taken it off as you would a jumper....over my head.... so I got out of it without undoing any of the buttons. This time last year my tunic was kind of snug, and a couple of people have lately told me I need some new ones. The replacement jeans now need a belt. Little things like that make me realise that not only my clothes but my outlook has changed so. mosaic **********************************************************************
** Radiant Ambassadors ** Did you know that in amongst the wealth of information on the Ambassadors list there are a couple of Radiant Recovery flyers? No? Well you do now! The first flyer explains sugar sensitivity to children; and the second explains sugar sensitivity to teachers. Very handy this time of year as the children go back to school. The flyers are so bright and cheerful (with an added hint of information) that they could even be used as posters. Let me know if you can think of some great places to put a poster :) Selena selenas@blueyonder.co.uk Come join us if you are excited about spreading the news. **********************************************************************
** How I Found Radiant Recovery ** Hi this is Jen from Pennsylvania. I have read both PNP and SATRP and have been on Step 1 for close to 2 months. I have said for years that I am addicted to sugar (not that anyone truly believed me) and know that I am now in the right spot to get help. I am not very computer literate so am hoping this class will help me get around the resource sites and support groups better so I can make full use of them. Welcome all--nice to know I am not alone! **********************************************************************
** Radiant Recovery® Store ** David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son. Ok, our tuna is here and is AWESOME! What a find that is. I am eating tuna sandwiches again. If you stopped because you were concerned about mercury, try our tuna. It lives up to its name, King of the Sea Fancy Solid Tuna. This tuna offers flavor elite enough to grace the royal table – even more nobly, it contains less methyl mercury than leading brands, along with no soy fillers, no MSG and no added chemicals – while offering the benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Plus a 7 oz. can yields 15% more tuna than the typical 6oz can of tuna! The secret: King of the Sea uses only the finest yellowfin tuna. In independent lab tests, King of the Sea yellowfin tuna in water measured less than 0.1 parts per million for mercury. While the taste is fit for a king! ************** The 18-wheeler is arriving today with 2400 pounds of shake. The neighbors wonder at the process. The truck parks amidst the peacocks, we unload, and in a few hours you would never know what is stashed away in the back storage. Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better. **********************************************************************
** Radiant Kitchen ** With so many tomatoes from our CSA I have been making soup. Last week it was gazpacho and this week I made soup for my freezer for the winter. Yum! Gail
Cut the tomatoes in half lengthwise. Spread the tomatoes and onion on a baking sheet. Drizzle with the evoo. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast in preheated oven for 25 minutes or until caramelized. Transfer to a large pot. Add the garlic, broth, bay leaves and basil. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Simmer for 15 minutes longer. Add the butter. Stir until melted and combined. Cool slightly. Put into a blender (or use an immersion blender) to puree. Add a little more broth if desired. Season to taste with salt and pepper. ** Radiant YLD ** You will note that Obesity Myth Class up there. It is the beginning of the weight loss series we will be doing throughout the Fall. Someone recently said she was worried about joining YLD because she feared it would reinforce *diet head*. I was laughing because I think that YLD is the antidote to diet head. Fall is a wonderful time to come over. Get yourself settled before the holidays and look forward to a peaceful unfolding. If you would like to join, come find us here **********************************************************************

** Our Online Groups ** On the Radiant Step 5 list we talk about the importance of browns, about the different grains available - how to choose, how to cook, how to serve. We explore why for some of us wheat may not be the best alternative or not a good one. Step 5 can be exciting and you can learn how to introduce new things to resistant family members. We also call it the 'coming out' step since it's at this step that when we 'eat out' we may seem different to those not familiar with our program. **********************************************************************
**A New Way of Being With Your Kids ** Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.
Here are some special thoughts as you get ready for school. We held a chat on discipline. Many of the parents were trying to sort out how to handle children who were exhibiting these types of behaviors. They listed all the typical interventions you have heard: time outs, warnings, taking away privileges, negotiating – all the things the experts tell you to do. They also noted the things that the experts tell you not to do like yelling and smacking. These will not work with sugar sensitive children. Little sugar addicts are in an altered state when their chemistry is off. They are not rational. Punishment or discipline does not achieve the desired effect. If you can begin to look at these behaviors in a new way, you may be able to come up with some creative alternatives to what you have been doing. If your little sugar sensitive child starts acting up, feed him. Give him some protein and fruit right away. The fruit will deal with any sugar withdrawal that might be operating and will provide quick blood sugar relief. The protein will provide sustained, time-release support to his blood sugar. We have a funny saying in our parent community – “cheese not soap”. A cheese stick does wonders for a mouthy kid. Keep cheese sticks in the refrigerator all the time. Carry almonds in your purse. Put cheese and crackers in the glove compartment. Always have some power food available. Know where to stop and what to get in an emergency. Yesterday my 13 year old did not do his chores exactly right and when I asked him to finish them correctly, he said, “Mom, what do you expect? It is not my fault that I forgot to finish – it is my messed up biochemistry.” My kids are too smart for me – but I was able to counter him by tossing him a cheese stick. And it worked. Today I noticed my husband giving the kids protein. And even better – telling the kids to wait for a sugar treat until dinner. Sometimes I think I need to stop thinking so much and just start doing. My husband did not need the whole theory, he just thought it made sense and gave it a try. I think I can learn from this. DeAnna. Feed your children when they come home from school. They cannot go from noon 'til six. Their metabolism simply cannot cope with that amount of time without eating. If you are home, fix them something. If you work and they are responsible for after school fare, make sure to stock up and leave sufficient choices for them. Many children do really well with leftovers. If you make extra and have planned overs, you can make it really easy for your children to snack when they get home. For children who play after school sports, a planned snack is even more important. Pack an extra sandwich. Send along shake mix in a plastic bag. Your child can get an extra carton of milk and mix it with the protein powder. Or you can get some dry milk powder and mix it with the protein powder, put it in a shaker cup and stash it in the backpack. Many parents send sandwiches with lunchmeat or peanut butter for after school snacks. Go back and look again at the discussion of the protein amount your child needs. Generally speaking, shoot for a snack to contain 1/2 the protein that a meal will contain. If your child needs 20 grams of protein for breakfast, she will need 10 grams for her snack. A slice of bologna has about 3 grams, so it may not be the best choice. As they do these calculations, most parents realize that the snacks they have been providing are low in protein. A number of people have reported a huge change in their child’s attitude just from this one change. Getting enough to eat and regular intervals is crucial for the sugar sensitive child. Maintaining a stable blood sugar is significantly more important in children than in adults and I think it s easy for parents to miss this.
