August 8, 2011 Hi {!firstname_fix} Hot summer days have turned into late afternoon thunderstorms. The sky gets dark, huge clouds puff up with water and then drop it all in a really short time. We wait for rainbows to form afterwards. My dogs sit of the porch and watch. It is part of life in New Mexico. And then the rains cool everything and the temperatures drop in the evening, so nights are clear. Friday morning, the sky was filled with balloons. It means fall is coming soon. I love this time of year. I have been working on the new book and working to get things tidied before the start of *school*. I also have finally been able to start getting ahead of the bazillion tasks and commitments I have had, so I can put my energy into serving you better. This newsletter is a little richer than they have been. I am getting ready for EuroRanch. Have my ticket, am excited about going to Salisbury and even more excited about seeing all the lovely folks from Europe who gather with us. ** Testimonial of the Week ** Tee Hee. I am already laughing. I even tried to use the justification that the show "Saving Grace" had the word Grace in it so I must be "Destined" to watch it. Look how far our addiction amoeba takes us sometimes. To get this back on the step three track. I love the thought about how a "meal" constitutes planning, cooking AND cleaning up afterward. It is not just afterthought thrown together at the last moment. Also I have been struggling to put and "end" to my meals. When I drink soda with my meals, they can drag on for and hour or so. So I am becoming more conscious of my end meal time. Thinking about cleaning up is a good way to put a "period" at the end of my meal. You input a search category such as *sugar addiction* and Google checks everything that is posted on a daily basis with sugar addiction in it. I've already been sent several stories that are in the current press about sugar addiction and a handful of blogs too. I've also set up a search for Potatoes not Prozac. Never had a problem with eating breakfast as it is my favorite meal but had to increase my protein intake. Now, I know that pycnogenol does all sorts of very good things, but this is saying that it affects how we store fats. What an intriguing idea. Inhibition of lipogenesis by pycnogenol. Hasegawa N. Department of Food and Nutrition, Nagoya Bunri College, Nagoya, Japan. hsgwn@nagoya-bunri.ac.jp The influence of pycnogenol on the adipose conversion of 3T3-L1 cells by insulin was studied. In week 3 of culture with insulin, pycnogenol was found to inhibit significantly the expression of glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (p 0.01). This finding suggests that pycnogenol inhibits the accumulation of lipid droplets in adipose tissue. Copyright 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. ** Radiant Kitchen **
Mash the bananas into a 2 cup glass measuring cup. It should be between ˝ and 1 cup somewhere. Add vegetable oil to this cup so the total contents are 1 cup. Add in the milk and the lemon juice and stir all the contents together. Mix the three dry ingredients together. Add the banana mixture and stir just until mixed. Spread into a 9” round baking pan and bake for 15 minutes. Cool pan on a wire rack for a few minutes then remove cake and let cool completely. Putting it all together: Melt the butter and add to it a generous amount of fresh orange zest. Brush the top of the shortcake with it. Top with the sliced strawberries and freshly whipped cream. ** Radiant YLD ** Here is a fun quote from Milly. It just made me smile and I thought you would love it: I bought this dress a while back from Sainsburys of all places (that's a Supermarket for those in the US) and I thought it would be good for wearing around the house in the heat. It's a bright multi-coloured sun dress with thinnish straps, a stretchy bit under the bust and then a skirt. It's very comfy and great in the heat. I do not like my arms, they are very flabby, and so I do not wear strappy tops in public. So I would always, I thought, wear this dress with a cardigan. Anyway, yesterday it was HOT, so I wore it to Heathrow to pick my friend up, but I was sweltering in the cardigan so I was very brave and took it off. Actually I was too hot to care!! And you know what? The world did not end!! And my, I was soooo much more comfortable! There is a trend here at the mo to wear leggings under dresses, so I wore short ones (knee length) which also solved the usual fat thigh chaffing problem! So anyway, I was proud of myself for taking a step forward for fat girls everywhere who are always uncomfortable in the heat :) Thought you guys would get that! I think the best way to describe it is that it is the place where we are not talking about doing the food. Now what does that psychology talk mean? LOL. It means, if we are still using sugar or BE spiking, it takes a LONG time to get it. ** Our Online Groups ** The Radiant Depression group is all about support for the person who is depressed and trying to work Kathleen's 7-step program of recovery from sugar addiction. Many of us have struggled with severe depression for years without any hope of finding an end to it. But through doing the food we have found that hope returning and have found light where before there was only darkness. Some of us are taking anti-depressants while doing the food, so we talk about how the two are compatible and we also share about getting through the tough spots together, with support from each other. **Do Da Food Do Da Food ** Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.
I have been seeing an interesting theme in the community over the past few weeks. A number of people have been asking how they can raise beta endorphin, raise serotonin, activate dopamine. Some of these folks are fairly new to the program and some are old timers who are on step seven and thinking about deepening. For those of you early in the program, the trick is not to think about BE, serotonin and DA, but to think about the FOOD. If you try to tweak what you do for a given effect, you will derail yourself. It is like going back to taking this for that, and something else for another symptom. All of what we are trying to do is move you away from fixing into healing. The miracle is very simple. Your body will adjust and balance things if it has what it needs to do that. Your body has a cellular memory of things being balanced and if you help it with what you eat, it will go, 'oh, yes!!!' And move it into change. Honestly, your body is smarter than you have thought. Your body has really worked to serve you in spite of your meanderings and addiction. Given half a chance, it will be your ally and guide. Your task is to do the food. Doing the food is our code for doing the steps, carefully and with attention. It means breakfast on time with enough protein for your body, a complex carbohydrate. Lunch on time with the right foods. Dinner on time with the right foods. It means eating salad and vegetables and whole grains. It means going off sugar. It means journaling. The amazing part is that the core program works on healing. You do the food, and things change. It gets interesting when step 7 people say, "OK, now I am ready to raise BE or to stop spiking DA." And they try to start 'doing' all sorts of extras. And then they feel flat and out of sorts. Some of that comes post detox. Life without sugar takes some getting used to. So the ole addict brain says, "OK, I need to take something, I need to do something." But...they don't remember that they forgot to journal every day, or that they are eating 'program' food but having cheese with every meal, and skin off French fries twice a day as a brown. They don't remember that lunch is late and dinner is later. The food is OK, so they think they are 'doing the food' so it must be BE or dopamine. And it sounds so boring, so stubborn if I say, "Go back with a beginner's mind. Refine your food, work with your journal. And when that is all steady, exercise every day in a consistent manner. NO spiking, no big bursts of exercise and then collapse. Just every day, consistent. And learn to sit quietly, I would call this meditation, just sitting quietly for 20 minutes morning and night. Do not worry about BE and dopamine. Just do life." But here is the kicker. If you do this, when you do this, some miracle continues. It is not dramatic and all at once, but one day you turn around and realize that NOTHING of your old life is the same. You haven't had to fix it all. It just happened. Now, I totally get it that this idea seems outrageous. It seems way too simple. But I have been listening. I have read maybe 500,000 postings, that would be a half a million comments. And you know what, the miracle comes. It comes in the same way, over and over and over again. It doesn't matter if you have a Ph.D. or have not graduated from high school. It doesn't matter how old you are, or what sex you are or whether you are a Christian or not, or a Jew or not. It doesn't matter whether you are happily married, have a gay or lesbian relationship, live alone, love dogs, or cats or birds. It doesn't matter where you live or what you do. If you do the food, and exercise and meditate, you get the same miracle. So this is an invitation to fuss less about your brain and more about your journal. We can do the brain stuff for fun (and I love it as much as you do), but the brain stuff is not the program. Breakfast is. Here are the folks who are helping put the newsletter together:
