November 1, 2010

Hi {!firstname_fix}

I have been working on the DVD from ranch last May. I was going to hire someone to do the editing, but started to play with it on my Mac. Then I went to a class at the Apple store. Then like a true Apple creative, I went into an altered zone and started editing. I had been in the room with the editor when we made the audio for the first PnP book, so I learned the principles. And thanks to modern technology and Apple, we have very high level tools to do this at home. Learning a new skill at this level is so exhilarating. Next week, I will learn how to upgrade and revise the slide show to go with the audio. I want to learn how to make graphs become animated, LOL. Today I did a story board, then I will match it to the audio and then make a DVD with a menu and tracks. All in Albuquerque with dogs on my feet.

You may wonder why I am bothering to learn this...mostly because I want to be able to start giving you new tools in video and audio for your ipods. If I understand the media, then I know what we can do..and it keeps my brain lively!

And, lest you think I am just sitting at my computer, LOL, I dug up my SWEET POTATOES!!! Magic! Nothing like an Irishwoman digging a potato! It stirred my soul to see the magic. Treasures in the dirt!

Don't forget the play class...I am so stoked about it.

These classes will begin Wednesday, November 3, 2010. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Radiant Step 4 (2 weeks) is the potato class. Come learn everything you ever wanted to know about the timing, size, frequency of your potato. Learn about the best vitamins and talk all you want about them. This is a nice way to strengthen and refine your step 4.

Radiant Step 7 (2 weeks) is a class for folks who have been on step 6 for more than a few months. This class will help you understand the art of step 7 - what it is and how it works. Step 7 is generally confusing at first. It seems as if it is the goal, but really it is the door to life in recovery. It is a very exciting place.

Handling the Holidays - Thanksgiving (2 weeks) is a special class to help you prepare for the holidays in a centered and reflective way. We love this class. It is a great way to get out of being frantic and scattered. I always look forward to this class because I love Thanksgiving so much. I hope you will join us.

These classes will begin Wednesday, November 10, 2010. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Radiant Step 1 (2 weeks) is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.

Radiant Step 6 (2 weeks) is a class for those of you getting ready to detox or having detoxed and wondering why it is so hard after. We talk about *the flat*.

And this class will begin December 1, 2010.

Radiant Play (2 weeks) - the material that came out of our discussions about the amygdala in chat. I learned that play has a huge impact on our ability to handle emotional change, and to make sense of the world. It was mind boggling to me. We will be talking about the neurochemistry of play. Why it is especially important for ss people and why even more so for those of us who have committed to recovery.

I want to give you enough lead time to plan for this class. It is not to be missed. I know it sounds funny that we would need a *class* on play, but I think many of us are serious little adults by the time we are 4. We grow up in families where we are taking care of everything so we miss some crucial stuff. But this class is not about the psychology of play, rather the neurochemistry of it. So come take it for you, or if you are a parent or grandparent, for your children. You know I get excited when I design a new class.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

Please wait to sign up for classes until a week or two before, and do not sign up for classes that are not yet scheduled.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

** Testimonial of the Week **

Mosaic is busy making a FANTASTIC MR FOX costume at the moment! Here are her words:

It's just what I need... I seem to have caught one cold after another for a few weeks, which I am putting down to darkening mornings - but I feel nearly adapted to it now.

But Mr Fox has energised me a bit. I am trying to sew ears onto a headband. Coming up is International Book Day and in our school, sixth form and year 7's dress up for the day as a book character. Last year Jo was Legolas, this year she is Fantastic Mr Fox, having fallen in love with the film. We have found her Dad's wedding waistcoat ( he must've been slender as Jo is tiny!) and I am sewing a tail and ears out of an orange bath mat we bought specially, LOL. It seems to have the right texture. Orange nail polish and some face paints, wild hair, will complete the look.

I do love playing! And rumour has it someone wants to be Mrs Fox and suddenly I am popular, with my sewing thread and spare bath mat bits.

It will do for her Halloween party too. We've never celebrated it, just the odd party, but is getting Very commercial lately round here and the sweets side is taking off it seems, shops are piled high.

Not much news this month but I do have a nice story. I inherited my grandmother's engagement ring. It is beautiful, but the wonderful thing ... tucked into the box is the original receipt. Made out to Lance Corporal Bell in 1916. It's like there is a whole story on that small piece of paper.

He was in the Army and my Mommaw was in service as a nanny/nursery maid.

Poppaw's passion was horses. In Ypres his horse was shot ( missing poppaw by a whisker of the mane) and he was heartbroken but he managed to nurse it back to health.

They were the nicest people you could meet, and I have a few pieces of paper and treasures from their lives. It's really inspired me to make sure their history is passed on to my kids.

** Radiant Ambassadors **

As you are reading this newsletter, the chances are that you already know about both of these. But what if you want to tell other people about them too? What information would help you to talk about Radiant Recovery and Sugar Sensitivity?

We have been having this discussion on the Ambassadors list. How about a powerpoint presentation? Copies of Radiant Recovery business cards? An example of a letter or email that has already been sent? How about some pointers from Kathleen on to how to talk about Radiant Recovery in just 5 minutes? Or how to use Twitter?

Now is your chance to help shape what information is available! Come on over to the list or feel free to write to me with your ideas.

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Hi. Criss here in rural Iowa. I started the program maybe 10 days ago and am in the Step One class. Found PnP through a friend and was kind of amazed how much just eating breakfast could do.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

Get a little travel mixing bottle. We have been getting awesome reports back from the people who have them. You don't need batteries, they really mix well and are very light weight. I put a baggie full of Restore right in the bottle.
And if you are going on a plane, make sure to take Pycnogenol. One of the things it is most noted for is its protective effect on DVT (deep vein thrombosis - blood clots from sitting in a plane for a long time). This effect has been tested in a number of peer-reviewed studies in major journals. Kathleen highly recommends it for that purpose.
And remember, you can have us send products right to your holiday destination. Last week, someone forgot her Shake and we sent some out overnight so she had it there the next morning. All versatile are we!!!!

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

Yam Cakes

This is a recipe of Angela’s and it is one of those highly adaptable recipes, so play until you get it how you like it best. We’re still playing, but my kids love them. I’ve been experimenting with adding some Restore too. So far, I’ve done ¼ C Restore in place of part of the flour and it has worked great. I’ve also used some different flours for fun.
  • 4-6 medium sweet potatoes (for 3-4 C after baking)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (softened or melted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon alcohol free vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon alcohol free maple flavoring
  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 1 cup brown rice flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice blend
Bake sweet potatoes until soft, let cool, and take off skins. Place sweet potatoes, butter, eggs, vanilla, and maple flavoring into food processor and whizz it all up until well combined. In separate bowl combine flours, baking soda, and spice, whisk to blend well. Pour wet ingredients into dry and mix to fully combine. Spread in a well-greased baking dish and bake at 350 until tooth pick inserted comes out clean (or mostly clean). Baking time depends on what size dish I put it in, but usually around 30 or 40 minutes. Cut into squares and enjoy :-)

** Radiant Conversations **

I do not understand how our chats can be more and more fun each week! I just came away from chats feeling so filled up. Thank you all for coming. What an incredible discussion on learned helplessness we had.

This week's chats will be on local time. So Eurochat will be on their time (they will have turned their clocks back). And US Chat will be on our time. We won't turn them back for another week.

If you are not a YLD member, come and join us. Click here if you want to be a part of the latest and greatest or just have some plain ol' fun!

** Our Online Groups **

Introduction to Radiant Cooking is a group for people in all stages of the program who want to explore new ways of cooking. We have people who have cooked little in the past, but want to begin preparing their own meals so that they can be sure of having delicious, program friendly food. There are also people who have always been good cooks, but are now fixing different kinds of foods.

We gather around a virtual kitchen table, with a nice cup of tea and our questions and ideas. People bring experiments, successes, and suggestions. It's a great place to ask what to do with a food you haven't tried before! Or, to tell us what you found to do with it. We love to hear everyone's ideas and success stories!

**Josie and the Unicorn **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

This is one of my favorite newsletter articles. I love posting it this time of year.

This week is a special story. A number of us decided that we wanted to *convert* Halloween from a sugar orgy to a fun, fun party. We decided to have a costume party for the dogs and then take them trick or treating.

One of my friends adores my older Golden Retriever named Josie. She asked me if she could make Josie’s costume. I was thrilled. She lives in Boulder so I was given measuring instructions. Neck to tail, girth, space between eyes, space around neck, wrist size, distance across chest. I got regular updates and pictures of the process.

The unicorn would have a bonnet with a horn and little ears. The hooves would be little bi-colored booties, the bonnet would have a fabulous mane to match a removable tail. The material was specially chosen. And then the artistry began. It was so much fun to hear how it was progressing.

In the middle of the process, I heard that our local boutique dog store was sponsoring a costume contest. I just knew Josie would win. She would be the princess of Albuquerque because I knew she would have such a stunning costume.

The costume arrived, carefully packed with tissue and a toilet paper roll around the horn. On Saturday, we were set to get dressed. Josie actually liked it. We had to do a little personalization with safety pins. But we got the hooves in place, got the coats attached, the tail velcroed, and the cap in place. Then she leapt on the bed and rolled. The costume survived.

Off we went to the contest. There was mighty competition. I felt smug since *those* costumes were bought and of course Josie was decked in a handmade glory. We were number 24. When I took her down the runway, she pranced and when everyone clapped, she almost took a bow.

But she did not win. Peter Pan and Tinkerbell won. But I want you to see how Josie felt about that. Here she is, with her costume slightly askew. This is radiance. There is nothing more than this smile, this joy in BEING. May we all be taught by smiles like this.
