Hi {!firstname_fix}

I have been spending time getting the things all set for Ranch. I think we are all getting really excited. I am not sure why it feels so different this year. I know I am excited about the material I am presenting. I am getting it all set to go. I love having it come together so cleanly. I met with the hotel people and got the details all squared away and have been working with all the mentors who are coming to make sure everything flows smoothly. We were laughing at the details we provide to attendees.

We do still have some slots left on the off chance you want to come on down to NM for ranch.

Your journal gives you a picture of 'before.' As you continue the program, you will enjoy being able to look back at your journal and see how far you have come.

** Testimonial of the Week **

My how time flies . . . I have posted 59 days in a row. Doesn't seem possible. I have decided I will post tomorrow, as well, to make a round 60. So, I have met my commitment here and feel it is time to use my wings to fly on further. The foundation here has been so important, and you never know when I might stick my head back in to say hi and post a breakfast. In any event, I wish all you step "1"ers a good journey through this step.

Today's breakfast was:

A shake made with . . .
  • 1 1/2 cups rice milk
  • 1 full scoop and 1 scoop to the line of Restore protein powder (35 gr)
  • 1/3 cup baby oatmeal
  • 1/3 cup frozen berries
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 Tbsp. maple syrup
Today was a day of using a straw with my shake. Some days I do and some days I don't. I especially enjoy the straw when I am either in need of hurrying to get it within the hour or I don't particularly feel like having it. It seems to go down a lot easier with the straw. Sometimes I like the straw, just for fun!

Now that I have my step one wings, I am on my way to make another commitment on the step 2 list.

Blessings to all,
Dayahna

** Radiant Ambassadors **

Do you enjoy public speaking? Or are you like me and try to avoid it whenever the occasion arises LOL? Well, that was the recent topic of conversation on the ambassadors list.

Kath shared this with us about her experiences:

I was floored after a recent talk that I gave (about nutrition "Eating well on a budget"), to have someone come up afterwards and compliment me on my excellent public speaking. I found myself wanting to look behind me to see who they were addressing, because I just gave a talk!

I stood up and talked about the things I know, I warmly and confidently responded to questions afterwards...it had not occurred to me *that* was public speaking LOL. I thought of public speaking as giving a speech (the thought of which scares me witless).

I am sure that familiarity with the material, a lived experience which just happens to be being shared verbally is the key for me!

How exciting is that!

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

A friend on the FlyLady UK forum mentioned the RR website to me. I checked it out, cried buckets and my then boyfriend went out and bought me Potatoes not Prozac the next day. That was 6 years ago - and it's been totally life changing!

What great observations!

Your query is familiar to me, sure. Some browns just hold me differently than others and I've been so thankful for my journal to help me discover that they just aren't all created equal.. and which ones work best for me and so then I just lean towards the ones that do.

Potatoes and corn are faster browns than some other with the starches burning faster/warmer than most grains- so there may be some clues there.

The wholer the grain, the longer they take to digest and process which means staying satisfied longer. I'll use the example of oats where I have the most experience with them while this can be applied pretty universally with other grains, etc. I will list the various forms starting with the wholest which stay with me so much longer, to the finest which feel more like a wisp.
  • Oat groats (wholest)
  • Steel cut oats
  • Thick cut rolled oats
  • Oatcakes rough cut
  • Old fashioned rolled oats
  • Oatcakes fine cut
  • Quick cooking oats
  • Instant oats
  • Oat flour (fine)
  • Baby food oats (finest)
As far as blood sugar impact goes 1 cup of groats = 1/4 c of baby oats. Bulk wise, the baby oats will process in my system *a lot* sooner than a cup of cooked groats. So my blood sugar would drop sooner. I would have to eat a boatload of baby food oats to feel as satisfied as a cup of groats, while doing so would be really spikey in terms of blood sugar.

So then we have say corn.
  • Whole Kernel (whole)
  • Polenta (coarser corn meal-medium)
  • Corn meal
  • Tortillas
  • Tortilla chips
  • Corn flour (fine)
  • Corn starch (extra very fine)
The more processed the grain is, the less processing for our bodies to do = faster burn time= hungry sooner.

Or rice..
  • Whole brown rice
  • Instant brown rice (precooked, re-dried)
  • Brown rice pasta with br rice bran added
  • Brown rice flour/brown rice pasta
  • Cream of brown rice cereal
  • Brown rice cakes
  • Baby rice cereal
So a brown rice cake very well may not hold someone as well as a say a cup of brown rice.. I think the density ratio there is 1 cup of whole brown rice = 3 rice cakes, or two waffles, and again the rice cakes and waffles may find us hungry sooner. The journal always knows. :) One can just try, and see.

Another bit about potatoes, where it is the skin that makes it a brown- so the higher skin to flesh ratio, the slower/faster of a brown it will be. A serving of roasted tiny whole baby potatoes works way better for me than say home fries where a big potato is cut into small pieces (less skin).

A dish like succotash, or beans/brown rice salad are really dense and so big winners in my book.

I'm wondering if this info supports your findings that some of your browns that are more comfortable for your body don't hold you as well in terms of hunger? I would love to hear what your findings are as you experiment!

HTH's, and have fun playing!

Diane

** Your Last Diet - More Than What You Think **

Well, at our last chats we talked about the idea of 10:10, a new approach to radiant movement. The idea is to simply walk for 10 minutes. You can even stroll. Then you turn around and walk back to where you started. It seems very easy. We all got really excited. We will be talking about this on the movement list. It is the beginning of looking at some pretty interesting concepts about what kind of movement enhances weight loss. I love YLD, we keep discovering new things. Here is what Mosaic wrote to the forum:

So after Wednesday's chat I got excited about 10/10. The idea that gentle movement incorporated into everyday life is a very good thing for us.

And a good challenge for me will be to do a 10/10 every day. That's setting off - from my house - 10 minutes out and 10 minutes back.

I love this idea so much because if I decided to do 20 minutes of movement I would think that is an awful lot. But 10 out, smart turnround and 10 back - well, it's manageable. Don't know why, but it is...

...or so I thought . Thursday went great, and I posted on the Brits list about how good it was. Friday .... it was much more fun thinking of how BUSY I was, and I had the opportunity to talk with my son, and mum-in-law coming for dinner ,etc. etc. I have not got the hang of it yet.

So I hoped perhaps I could post for seven days to give myself a good focus and then review and go to movement list. This will help me tune in to planning the time for it, finding the motivation and journaling it.

I have discovered that in my 10/10 I do not like carrying anything!

So today I had to go to the chemist. I didn't want to carry things, so I walked to the chemist and started my 10/10 from there. I decided to go just after lunch so that I would have plenty of time and feel nourished ( planned overs of mincecourgette and potato fritter).

I walk along the high street and cover more ground than I thought I would. I peer into shop windows as I go. I am a bit astonished that several new shops have appeared that I have not noticed when I am task-focused and not just looking at the world.

What I like most is there are no targets or conditions set on my movement. I don't have to be conditioned to walk up to the zebra crossing or the garage before turning back. Just my 10.

When the row of shops run out I am pleased to find I like gazing at houses and gardens better. There's a lot of new blossoms around.

At 10 I realise I am not using a good gait. I tend to walk with stiff hips and so I decide to try and walk like a cat. You know, all loose joints. That works better.

I have a treat on my return 10. Just before the chemist is a new shop that I have never got round to looking at. Walking ( cat like ) I hear meditation-type music coming from the shop. So I look in, and find a treasure trove - embroidered wallets, crafts, stone and slate, lots of necklaces. I choose three for £1. Long candles that I can use for meditation candles.

Then I call in the shops and feel happy carrying my stuff home.

All through the steps I have had a real sticking point with exercise. I know very well that it is the things I resist that bring me lots of benefits.

This 10/10 Movement is feeling good to me. It is different from anything I have done before. It was fun today.
And remember, you do not need to lose weight to come join us. Chats are designed to be the cutting edge of our community thinking.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

I know a lot of you are getting your plans for ranch settled. Here are two great suggestions:

Get a little travel mixing bottle. We have been getting awesome reports back from the people who have them. You don't need batteries, they really mix well and are very lightweight.

And if you are going on a plane, make sure to take pycnogenol. One of the things it is most noted for is its protective effect on DVT (deep vein thrombosis - blood clots from sitting in a plane for a long time). This effect has been tested in a number of peer-reviewed studies in major journals. Kathleen highly recommends it for that purpose.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

** Our Online Groups **

Movement is a special place. This is where the folks who are just starting to move, or who are wanting to learn a different way to do non-stress, non-spiking ways of energizing body, play. We are just exploring the whole 10:10 concept. Won't you come and join us?

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm
