April 5, 2010

Hi {!firstname_fix}

I spent the day preparing a vegetable garden. Got the compost out, got some manure, tilled everything. Well I didn't do the tilling. (smile) I have a 17 year old for that part. But now the area smells like soil and the faint odor of cow. Much more fun than Farmville, LOL. I have to decide what I want for it. I put it in a dog-free zone, so I will actually have tomatoes!!

We have all recuperated from the growth of Maine and some jet lag to boot. I am happy to be home and getting settled. Next week I will get everything ready for Ranch, yah!

We also are initiating a new process for the Using Radiant Resources class. We have broken the material into 4 modules. Each will be a week and will be taught by different liaisons. All of them are free and you are welcome to take all. We are limiting the class size as well, so you will have way more individual attention.

These classes will begin Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Please click on the name of the class you wish to join and it will take you to the registration page:

Using Radiant Resources, Module 1 Introduction (1 week) is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double-decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.

Radiant Step 2: Upgrading Skills (2 weeks) is is the second level of journaling. This is for those of you who know *how* and want to learn what to do with your data. This class shows you how to interpret what you have written in an exciting and pragmatic way.

This class will begin Wednesday, April 14, 2010. Please click on the name of the class you wish to join and it will take you to the registration page:

Brain Chemistry: Dopamine (2 weeks) is the newest addition to the brain chemistry series. Learn about the mighty cousin to serotonin and beta endorphin. Learn how he sparkles and seduces and what to do to have him as an ally rather than a dragon.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

Please wait to sign up for classes until a week or two before, and do not sign up for classes that are not yet scheduled.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

** Testimonial of the Week **

I love reading about your breakfasts, Ray. Nice job planning :)

I used to ride horses, and one of the big things I had to learn was to hold my focus on where I was going. If I was approaching a jump, I looked over the jump instead of at the huge, scary obstacle looming ahead. If I looked at the ground, I ended up on the ground! And if I looked too far ahead, way down the line two or three turns and jumps ahead, my horse might refuse the jump we were actually approaching. And if I looked at all the other distracting things around, my horse got totally distracted, too. Focus made it happen, where fretting and distraction didn't. It sounds like a funny thing, to a less-confident rider like myself, it felt like a miracle.

I remember someone once said throw your heart over the fence and your horse will follow. That is pretty much how I did this program. I threw my heart over the step I was on and took the rest of it on faith.

No idea if that makes any sense LOL. But it's what I thought of. I think you are doing just great.

Jeannie

** How I Found Radiant Recovery **

I found out about Potatoes not Prozac in Christianne Northrup's holistic health newsletter. When I read about sugar sensitivity in the newsletter, I thought, "that sounds like what's wrong with me." I went to a bookstore on my lunch hour, started reading the book, and bought it after seeing everything I hated about myself listed as a symptom of low beta endorphin.

** Radiant Kitchen **

We had this nutloaf when we were in Maine. It is incredible. Take the time to make it. You will not regret it. It is Heather's recipe.

I made a nutloaf this week and it came out divine! I’m so excited to have another protein option to add to my repertoire. I do plan to have another protein source with this as I think per serving it is only in the teens for protein count, but wow is it good! Even my husband thinks it is "not bad" :).

I based the recipe loosely on one I saw online on a vegetarian site that is all user contributions.

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 cup chopped/grated green cabbage
  • 1 grated carrot
  • 1/2 grated apple
  • ½ large portobello mushroom cap, chopped finely
  • 1 cup ground cashews
  • 2 cups ground pistachios (you could use any combination of nuts, I’m sure)
  • 1 ½ cups bread crumbs (I used brown rice)
  • 4 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons low sodium tamari
  1. Sautee the cabbage and carrots in oil until lightly browned. Stir in tomato paste
  2. In a large bowl combine all other ingredients except eggs and tamari
  3. Scramble eggs with tamari sauce together and then fold into rest of ingredients
  4. Pack firmly into an oiled pan. I used a 6 x 9 inch (or so) pan, what I used to call a brownie pan LOL.
  5. Put pan in a larger pan, I used a 9 x 13 (or so), and fill larger pan with water almost to the top of the smaller pan
  6. Cool for 60 minutes on 400, stopping half way through to add water. Turn oven down to 350, add more water, and cook another 30 minutes (total cook time is 90 minutes)

I have to say that I didn't think George's Shake was for me, but I finally bought some at Ranch and it is amazing! Something about it really makes me feel good. Now I have to use up all the Restore I bought, before I can get some more of the WONDERFUL George's!

**What Life With Children Can Be Like **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

First of all, I would like you to read this note that Janie recently wrote to the parents’ list:

I'm sitting here contemplating all the wonderful things that have come about in my relationship with my teenagers because of this program. I'm filled with joy and wonder and I just had to share this with you all. My twins are 15 and sophomores in high school. Last Friday night they had a movie night at our house. There were 8 girls here. My husband made pizza with brown rice crust and various toppings. There was no soda, lol. Then later they popped some popcorn. My girls were laughing and giggling, having a good time. No fights, yelling, screaming or whatever. They laugh with me and include me in their stories and jokes. They are not embarrassed by their mom, lol.

Then last night they had a sleepover. There were 14 of them!! Some of them I picked up at school with the twins and they came home with us. I had two big plates of nachos for them, again no soda. For dinner they had pizza. We found this pizza place by us that actually has 100% whole wheat pizza crust. We ordered 5 pizzas with various toppings. They loved it. Again, I was joking and laughing with the girls. My girls happily included me. It was so fun. No arguing or anything.

Then this morning my twins made a big pan of scrambled eggs and bacon. There was whole grain toast and one of the other girls made french toast. There's not a drop of syrup to be found in my house, lol, so the twins gave them the all fruit spread. No problem at all. The girls ate everything and then they cleaned up everything. Then slowly their parents came to pick them up. It was an amazing experience.

To be able to provide this for my girls is just such a blessing to me. Especially when I think back to when I was a teenager and all the fighting and yelling, screaming, tears etc. I see some of this with other parents. I am beyond thankful for this program. It just brings tears to my eyes. Happy Labor Day weekend. We moms sure know the meaning of that word, lol!

Janie

I think Janie’s report pretty much sums up what I hear over and over and over about children on the program. We expect *terrible twos* but they just don’t happen with program kids. We anticipate struggles and problems, coping with identity and tears and sibling rivalry and ADD and mood swings. That just does not happen with program children. We plan for the kinds of teen years that Janie remembers, and I remember. Anger, moods, tears, drama, embarrassment with our parents, flouncing about.

When we start the program, we think, well maybe I can do this, but my family won’t ever buy in. But you know what, they will. They buy in when you are no longer ambivalent. And then something happens. We get RELATIONSHIP, connection, humor, respect, sibling adoration and value. Honestly. I am not making this up. I didn’t know this when I started. I just thought I had nice kids, LOL. But now, what I see is that my kids were doing the program (albeit in a somewhat less refined manner), and that meant they were in balance. And NORMAL means kids like each other, like and respect their parents, do problem solving, serve as role models with their peers and generally rock.

School has just started. I am going to invite you to do something outrageous. Get your kids on the program. Get Little Sugar Addicts and learn the steps for kids. They are different (and way simpler) than your steps, LOL. And join the parents’ list. I want you to give your children this miracle. I want your children to have the kind of lives that Janie’s kids have. Whew, doesn’t that just give me shivers!!
