** Testimonial of the Week ** Thank you, Kathleen. It feels good to have a knowing deep inside that it is good, and passing the reality check was important. I *have* come a long way, and that has allowed my family members to come a long way too. I am so grateful to be here as I know hope-filled stories like this kept me going when I first got here. It is a gift to have my own story to look at now and to be able to share with others. Something just occurred to me so I went to check my calendar and my journal. I think it is no coincidence that exactly one year ago today I got a call from my son telling me he had been checked into a psychiatric hospital. I heard him say he didn't care if he ever left there and would stay as long as he could. We are so far from there now it is barely believable. I think I will share this with him in a phone call. I suppose maybe it would be okay to have a great big gushing cry of gratitude too. That may come. But for now, I just finished my potato, my bed is calling, and I think I will gratefully kneel during my prayers tonight. When God led me here He blessed a lot of people beyond measure. Thank you, Kathleen, for being here with me every step of the way. This is kind of giving me goose-bumps. ~smile~ I just went to my binder of some printed posts and it opened immediately to just what I was thinking of. In February I told you that to say 'Thank you' will never be enough. You replied, "...And you don't have to say thank you, you just live into your answers, and later, you will be passing it on. It is how it works." That I should live to pass it on...that is one of my prayers. Love, Susan **********************************************************************
** Radiant Ambassadors ** Kath told us about a talk that she gave about Radiant Recovery. I thought you'd love to see what happened as much as I did: Today I gave a talk about RR at my local Library. The audience of 50 or so were attentive and very keen with questions at the end. I used Kathleen's powerpoint presentation from the ambassador list files and talked to it, adapting the 10-minute talk. I had hoped to use the You Tube video "Are You a Sugar Junkie," but some technical difficulties limited that. I am glad that I took the time yesterday to go and check out the venue. Their data projector did not work with my laptop. My data stick worked in their laptop, and opening Office (rather than MS powerpoint) did work with their data projector, but there was no internet access available in that room for using the video, which I couldn't figure how to load onto the data stick. In the end it worked out just fine without!. My main purpose was to inform people, and raise awareness about Sugar Sensitivity. I added to the powerpoint presentation, screenshots of the RR website, the Make Connections tab, and how to find the step 1 list, downunder etc . I I handed out RR cards and had a significant number of enquiries wanting to purchase the few copies of Kathleen's books I had with me. I had taken the books as an example of what could be borrowed, (if one is prepared to wait on the interlibrary loans) and was wary of the implication that I might be trying to sell either the books or my nutrition consulting...I was there to tell a story (smile). None the less ! , people bought books, and I had a consult immediately afterwards with a member of the audience. At the moment it is someone who deems herself computer illiterate. We shall see (chuckle). I was very grateful to have the Powerpoint and talk resources to call on and use as a base for what I presented (thank you so much, Kathleen). The feedback was that it was clear, easy to follow, well organised, and interesting. All very gratifying! The library person left me with the challenge of coming up with another slant to make the presentation different enough to get away with doing it again (smile). Kath Come join us if you are excited about spreading the news. **********************************************************************
** Radiant Kitchen ** Sweet Potato Waffles (or Pancakes)
Directions: Preheat waffle iron. Combine the cooked sweet potato, oil, egg white and milk in a large bowl and beat until well blended. Add flour, baking powder and salt and beat until smooth. Spray hot waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray. Cook waffles according to manufacturer's instructions using 3/4 c mix per waffle. Serve with yogurt, fresh fruit, fruit compote or unsweetened applesauce. If making pancakes, heat griddle until a sprinkle of water dances on griddle. Drop 1/4 cup batter on griddle. Cook until bubbles form on surface (about 3 minutes). Flip and cook on other side until golden brown. Both waffles and pancakes can be frozen and reheated later. ** Radiant Recovery® Store ** David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son. As I said last week, I have started sending out a special newsletter for all our store subscribers. As we were working on setting this up, we talked with many of you. I realized that often you have questions about which products to use that are better suited to having Kathleen's input than mine. She and I have worked out a new concept for store subscribers. She will be happy to work with you to make decisions about which shake to use, which omega products to use, what products might be best for your children, or other questions like that. We have already done one of these mini consults and it worked out really well. I love adding things to your resources. Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better. **********************************************************************
** Our Online Groups ** On our Radiant Fitness group we talk about how doing the food can support our fitness program and vice versa. Some favorite topics are what to eat when doing intensive exercise when all that's out there commercially are sugar-filled products. We also talk about what to eat before and after morning workouts, and what to do for those folks whose training program requires a twice-a-day workout. We have runners walkers, bikers, dancers, aerobicizers, yogis, and many more types of exercise enthusiasts on the list. One of the neat things on the list is people who are recovering from exercise addiction who are learning how to work exercise back into their life in a healthy way. If any of this fits you, well, come on over and join in. **********************************************************************
** Caffeine ** Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.
This week I want to raise the issue of caffeine with you. I am going to include a section from the book, Little Sugar Addicts. It will be less scary if I am talking about your children than about you. (smile) I think the most compelling evidence about the impact of caffeine on your child’s brain comes from the work of Peter DeWitt who gave a group of spiders different drugs in the late 60s. DeWitt found the spiders that make what is called an orb web. It is beautiful, highly regular and predictable and can be easily photographed.
Sort of stops you cold, doesn’t it? Think about the implications of this for your child’s brain. Think of the impact on his ability to function in school. Sure made me think some. The key part of the caffeine story is the level of the “dose” based on your child’s weight. A can of soda for you is not the same as a can of soda for your child. A 12 oz. can of Coke has 35 mg of caffeine (Diet Coke has 45). If you put 35 mg of caffeine into a body that weighs 180 pounds, it diffuses a whole lot more than if you put it into a body that weighs 60 or 40 pounds. Basically, the same size can of soda can have 3 times more effect on your child than it does on you. Think about that spider web picture when you think about the dose impact on your child. As you think about caffeine, remember that it is found not just in coffee and soda. Here is a list that gives you a sense of the relative value of caffeine in foods and drinks I am going to include some things like Starbucks drinks because I have noticed so many children now drinking Starbucks specialty drinks.
I strongly encourage parents to get their children off caffeine. Do not give your children drinks and foods with caffeine in them. If your child is currently using caffeine, do not stop it abruptly. Going off the drug should be done through what we call a taper process. This means cutting down over time. The first task is knowing the current level of using it. Figure out how much caffeine your child is getting. Use the same process you have been using all along. Do this with your child. Cut down over a 2-week period. If your child has caffeine soda intermittently, you can simply stop and say we aren’t doing that kind any more. Start with this before you think about the rest of the program for your kids. And come join the parents list if you would like to learn more. Here are the folks who are helping put the newsletter together:
