Hi {!firstname_fix}

What a week it has been. Our shake FINALLY arrived and 4 guys and my 53 Chevy truck moved 3000 pounds of it from the big truck that delivered it to the back shed that stores it. David has been working 'til midnight packing for the last three days. The people at the post office were chuckling that he sent his MOTHER with the boxes.

We have some sad news to report as well. Last week, Franklin took a pretty serious turn for the worse. Over the last month or so, it had become clearer that his brain was deteriorating. His physical function had gone down and his neural function had been going in and out. His threshold was way lower and when he fell below a certain level, he went into *attack* behavior with thrashing and snarling and biting. As you might imagine, this had made it more and more difficult to care for him.

For the last week, his episodes went from intermittent to pretty steady and it had become clearer that his quality of life was no longer very good. It seems as if he was not only out of control but was in pain.

Diane and I were talking a lot and it had become clear that it really was time to let him go. We both have known about this possibility and I think we both knew that this time would come. JoEllen has been wonderful in the transition and we will plan a little ceremony for our time at ranch. We will add his ashes to Patches and Samantha at the feet of Guadalupe with the rocks in Albuquerque. And our memories will be of him fully restored, with perfect balance and sight romping with Samantha, Patches, London and Sterling...and all the others who have gone before him.

I am adding some comments from one of our friends who is an animal communicator.

" Hi Diane, Here is a compilation of what I was writing down at the time and what I remember that wasn't written from when we just talked. It feels to me like he has an infection of some kind in his head that is putting pressure on him and making him uncomfortable. You mentioned he hasn't been able to walk and is increasingly uncomfortable. These could be signs from him that it's time to go. Trust yourself. You love him so well now, and you've loved him so well all along. This life has been a good experience for Franklin. He feels gratefulness, that this has been good. You have helped his soul so much. He's surrounded by beings/angels that have been with him throughout his life. So if he's here or there he's still with them. His length of time on Earth is not important like the quality of the time has been. He has had such magnificent care from you - he'd wish that for any dog. He was probably only going to stay a short time anyway. He is at peace with passing over."

His passing was quiet and while we are all sad, we know that he came to do a job, and did it well. I know that many of you have cared about this story a lot.

** Testimonial of the Week **

Hi everyone! I am still out of town, but I wanted to share how my travel day went. Last Friday, I flew to LA and wow what a difference being prepared for it makes!

We left our home before 6 am. I usually eat around 6:30, so breakfast was early for me. We flew from Detroit to Chicago and it was 11:00 (Detroit time) when we landed, so it was time for me to eat.

When the plane landed at O'Hare, I had about 90 minutes to catch my next flight. Because I was prepared, it went so well. Earlier in the week, I had gone on O'Hare's website and printed off a map, so when the flight attendant told us our arriving and departing gates, I pulled out my map and knew where to go. I also printed off a list of the restaurants in the terminals, so getting food was no big deal.

In the past, this would have never happened. First of all, I would have been worried about getting lost, but since I had a map, it was easy. Also, in the past, I would have grabbed any food - probably the first I saw. In fact, my husband stopped at the nearest food place - which was a coffee and bagel stand. He got a bagel and cream cheese. This would not have been good for me. Instead, I knew that I could grab a chicken salad at a restaurant on my way to the gate.

Because of this planning, I was calm and steady. If I hadn't eaten, I know the crowds in the airport would have caused anxiety - which would have led to my getting angry at my husband (for nothing!) which would have led to his reaction...which would have continued the negative spiral. But it didn't happen. I felt the crowds, but not the anxiety. Even my husband noticed how I was *not* panicking and told me how proud he was of me.

The four-hour flight to LA went well. When we got to our hotel, it was near time to eat again. I had packed some *radiant food* and I knew the food was in the suitcase with the yellow handle, so I went straight into that for a snack. Within an hour, I was eating a great meal at a local restaurant that I already knew about because of the planning I had done. The snack held me over until we got settled and to the restaurant.

All in all, the travel day went very well. I am so thankful for everyone helping me out with it. I hadn't realized how much planning can support my program. Kathleen - the suggestions you posted before I traveled were perfect. It is amazing how being prepared plus doing the food can support a hectic day like traveling. The best part is, instead of spending a few days recovering from it, I felt steady and am enjoying my trip!

Thanks again for your support!

** Radiant Ambassadors **

Well, the Ambassadors list has been buzzing this week! One post stood out - Cinzia told us about her experiences of talking with a health care professional about RR - I thought you might enjoy it: "I had my first appointment with a nutritionist at an integrative medicine clinic yesterday. It was very interesting...she asked about all kinds of stuff in my life, not just my symptoms and my food.

We talked about emotions, time of life, my job, relationships, and of course addiction and food. I had brought my journal, which she LOVED. She really looked at it (from the front pages of Kathleen's info, thru my entries, to blank pages). She was thrilled by it! If I had had a blank one, I would have given it to her. (I did tell her where she could get some of her own.) (smile)

I also happened to bring along an extra copy of PnP. She said she had read it years ago but seemed a bit vague about it. I told her this was a new edition and gave it to her. I think I kind of knocked her socks off (do you Brits say this??). I mean, she really liked it when she saw what I eat, how I track my feelings and symptoms (and cycle), how I make sure to drink enough water, how I know that little headache in the back of my head is telling me I'm dehydrated, etc...basically, how I follow the RR program.

I have another appointment with her next week, so we'll discuss it some more. When I gave her the book, she said, "I know someone who would really benefit from this." I suspect she knows LOTS of people who could really benefit, LOL!

I was a little surprised she wasn't too familiar with RR, since she's very into a holistic approach to nutrition and health. I have a feeling that she'll become quite familiar with it, and not just from me. It's exciting to see a healthcare professional's interest in the program. Yay!"

Come join us if you are excited about spreading the news.

** Radiant Kitchen **

Cottage Apple Bake

Ingredients:

  • 6 small, sweet apples, sliced very thin (the recipe calls for peeled, but I don't peel 'em)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup cottage cheese (calls for lowfat, but regular works fine)
  • 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • dash salt

Directions:

  1. Place apples and water in a large nonstick skillet. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg. Simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes, until apples are slightly tender. Remove from heat.
  2. Preheat over to 350 degrees fahrenheit.
  3. In a blender container (or food processor), combine eggs, cottage cheese, dry milk, vanilla, and salt. Blend until smooth.
  4. Spread apples evenly in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking pan that has cottage cheese mixture evenly over apples. Sprinkle with additional cinnamon if desired.
  5. Bake, uncovered, 25 minutes, until set. Chill.

Makes 6 servings

** Our Online Groups **

Hi, I am Milly, the host for the Brits list and I wanted to let you know what has been going on with us lately. The Brits list was originally set up as a geo list to provide support for those doing the food in Britain. But, over the past few years British involvement in the RR program has grown and grown and we now have a YLD Eurochat on Wednesday nights (UK time) and our very own Euroranch in Salisbury for anyone doing the program in Britain and Europe. As a result of all of this, the Brits list has also grown a lot and is now a wonderfully fun place of support for anyone doing the programme in the UK. We talk about what it means to do the programme here, what different foods we eat, and how to translate American terms into British ones. And we also have lots of fun!! It is a great place, a very supportive group, full of wonderful people. We also have quite regular get-togethers, usually twice a year or so, mostly in London. The last couple have been at our favourite restaurant, Leon, where 15-20 of us happily take over their biggest table for several hours. They haven't complained yet, LOL. So if you are a Brit and you are doing this programme, we'd love to have you join us.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

** Some Thoughts on Losing Weight **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I thought it might be helpful to share a little about the whole weight-loss component of the program. In the last week or so, I have gotten a couple of letters from women who have said they can't do Radiant Recovery because they cannot risk gaining any weight. They heard some people refer to that and it totally spooked them.

I have been thinking about this a lot. What most people do as an antidote to gaining weight is to not eat. Skip breakfast, use caffeine to cut appetite and save the calories or points for the *good* stuff. Or else they will be good for 3 days and then on the fourth, crash and binge. And then stop again and be good for a few days. They weigh themselves every day. A good day is the day when the scale drops or stays the same, a bad day is when it goes up. Every day is a day of fear, of horror and self loathing. And underneath, there is a profound sense of being out of control and hopeless.

So if you come here, and you are asked to simply focus on breakfast, to eat healthy, nourishing and healing foods and you are not cutting back to compensate, you might gain some weight. Or if you add in a wonderful, healing breakfast and are still bingeing on sweets and breads, you might gain some weight. But think about this...it is your addict brain that screams it is the PROGRAM, that PROGRAM did it. The addict brain forgets, truly forgets about the sweets and the bread and only remembers breakfast because you had things under control before.

Fast forward to the willing souls who wanted something who said, *you know, I am going to just do this...* and here they are in the Weight Loss in Action group - the place where we get down to the business of pounds and bodies. And some people chose to wait a while. They said, *nope, not yet.*

We started off with a list:

Where am I with each step specifically?

Have I worked through the shame of being fat?
Have I worked through the societal messages about being fat?
Am I motivated to do whatever it takes?
Do I have a clear exercise plan, somewhat.

Each person functionally just reported in. If she could check yes to each of these..then we stopped and did some catch up work. All the participants are on step 7, they have taken the Obesity Myth class, they have taken the Weight Loss Emotions class. There was no thrashing, no drama, no angst, no fear, no doubt.

Think about this...no shame, nothing. Just *well all right, then. Let's do it.* And we are walking through the 8 or 9 variables that affect the ability to lose weight. Each person will create a plan suited to her age, her size, her goals. Each will use her own foods, in her own house. Each will move as fast or as slowly as she wishes.

Now, I have to tell you, this list has an energy, excitement and enthusiasm that is extraordinary. Here we are with a thousand failed diets among us...and not one person is even thinking of that. I am enjoying the weight I am losing, but even more, I am having so much fun that it is really delightful. So yes, YLD does lead to weight loss, although, I am thinking I should rename it to MEB...My Enhanced Body.
