Hi {!firstname_fix}
A small group of step 7 people came to Maine this last weekend for our first experimental step 7 workshop. We tried out some guided imagery. It was just lovely. We also had a lobster dinner. We set up tables and chairs in the garage and had a local guy cook them in huge pots on propane burners. A lobster fest one might say. We walked on the beach. This is practice for what I hope to offer in the future.
I am just finishing up the step 7 class as well. These two events have shown me how the community has grown. Now we have quite a number of people on step 7. What a miracle.
These classes will begin Wednesday, April 2, 2008. Please click on the name of the class you wish to join and it will take you to the registration page:
Using the Community Resources is for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.
What Else is Embedded in the Steps is the perfect class for new folks who want to understand that the program is more than the food. Come learn about how the process helps to heal addiction. And if you are not new, but haven't taken this class, it is excellent.
YLD Weight Loss Emotions is the class for those of you who are ready, are on step seven and want to clear out a little of the being fat baggage. You don’t need therapy, a two week class will give you wonderful, wonderful tools to get you on your way. This class is open to YLD members only.
These classes will begin Wednesday, April 9, 2008. Please click on the name of the class you wish to join and it will take you to the registration page:
Brain Chemistry: Dopamine is the newest addition to the brain chemistry series. Learn about the mighty cousin to serotonin and beta endorphin. Learn how he sparkles and seduces and what to do to have him as an ally rather than a dragon
Radiant Store Tour is a free guided tour of the store. David will be leading this class so if you want to get to know the guy that makes it all work, come sign up.
The class schedule is on line. Click here to see what is planned. Please do not sign up for classes that are not yet scheduled.
A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. The classes are done online and you do not have to be at your computer at any set time. It does not matter whether you are in the US, Europe, the Far East or Australia, you simply respond on your own time. And although I advertise that the classes are one or two weeks, sometimes we are a little flexible and they may run longer.
And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.
Please feel free to pass this week's newsletter on to your friends and family. Don't forget to let me know what you like and would like to see me cover.
Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery¨ website and Community Forum regularly.
Warmly,
Kathleen

Learning that you can have positive feelings from a thousand things other than food is a wonderful insight.

** Testimonial for the Week**
Hi Lisa:
Very well put. I remember when I started the program, all these "issues"
would come up. The Wise Ones would say "do the food." They were kind and gentle
about it, but I wasn't sure they understood my particular "special" problems.
But, I had tried everything else, so I did the food. And slowly, these
issues just sorta went away like a bubble popping in the wind. All sorts of issues
I had never identified, never approached. That first year was a constant tug
between the issues coming up, and then dissipating as I did the food.
And after a while, it all settled. Now, when "issues" show up, I check my
food. It goes back to that almost every time. Second on the list is sleep.
Third is "am I spending enough time on me?" But 2 and 3 don't count if I am not
taking care of 1 -- the food.
Thanks for posting.

**Radiant Ambassadors**
Talked about RR to a friend I suspect is sugar sensitive. I lent her
a copy of the new PNP, and if she likes it I intend to let her keep
it.
This is what else I plan to do:
Contact Scandinavian publishers who have published Kathleen's books
before, and ask them to start selling the new PNP and the other
books.
Contact magazines I think might be interested in my story. These
will
be health, fitness and well-being magazines, as well as women's
magazines. This I think will be a bit hard, since I'm NOT
comfortable
with a lot of attention and being featured in a magazine sounds like
hell on earth to me. I'll think about how to do this the introvert
way, LOL.
Write reviews for Kathleen's books on British Amazon (there's no
Scandinavian Amazon).
I think I'll have to break this up in baby steps and write them in
my
calendar or journal as a reminder, so I actually do it and not just
talk about it. When I have something to show, like a letter to a
magazine or publisher, I can ask for help on the Scandinavia list so
there are more voices than mine over here.
Thanks Selena for your wonderful enthusiasm!
Lisa

BROCCOLI AND TOFU WITH PEANUT SAUCE
Ingredients:
- 1 lb. regular tofu, extra firm
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 TBS. tamari sauce, wheat-free
- 1 TBS. fresh grated gingerroot
- 1 TBS. balsamic vinegar
- 1 TBS. olive oil
- 2 cups broccoli florets
- ¾ cup vegetable broth
- 1 recipe peanut sauce, prepared with vegetable broth
Process:
- Remove tofu from the liquid in its container. Wrap tofu in several layers of paper towel, pressing down firmly to remove as much excess water as possible.
- Cut tofu into 1” cubes.
- Combine garlic, tamari, gingerroot, and vinegar in a medium bowl. Add tofu cubes and marinate for 1 hour.
- Heat olive oil in wok or large skillet. With a slotted spoon, remove tofu cubes from marinade (do not throw away the marinade-you will need it for the sauce) and add carefully to the hot oil. Stir-fry quickly, 2-3 minutes. Remove tofu from pan. Set aside.
- Add vegetable broth to skillet and bring to a boil. Add broccoli florets and cook over high heat until crisp tender, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add peanut sauce and tofu and continue to cook until flavors are blended and warmed through. Taste, add reserve marinade to thin the sauce or enhance the spiciness of the dish.
- Serve hot over brown rice.
Yield: 4 servings
Note:
You can cut preparation time by purchasing pre-baked, marinated tofu—just be
sure to read labels and purchase a brand without sugar added.
PEANUT SAUCE
Ingredients:
- 1 TBS. olive oil
- 2 tsp. sesame oil
- ½ tsp. chili oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 TBS. soy sauce
- 2/3 cup peanut butter, sugar-free
- 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
- ½ cup apple juice
- ¼ cup scallions, sliced into thin rounds
- 2 TBS. fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
- 3 TBS. chopped peanuts
Process:
- In a medium saucepan, heat olive, sesame, and chili oils over medium heat. Add garlic and cook about 1 minute or until fragrant. Do not brown the garlic.
- Carefully add soy sauce, peanut butter, chicken broth and apple juice whisk until well combined.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, until flavors are blended and sauce is slightly thickened, 5 to 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in remaining ingredients.
- Use as a dressing, dip or sauce for vegetables, pasta, chicken, fish or pork.
Yield: 4 servings
Note:
½ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes on 1 finely minced serrano pepper can be substituted for the chili oil. Cook in step 1 along with the garlic.

**Your Last Diet: More Than What You Think**
YLDonline is a membership program run directly by Kathleen DesMaisons herself.
No questions, but I often forget about all the extras in there. I need to remember that.
I love chat. I try to go to the regular Wed. night chat as well as Eurochat and sometimes I pop into the newbie chat too. There is something almost magical about chat. It means that each week I commit, check-in, connect. And I receive energy, information, ideas, support, and caring. Even if I just sit quietly and read, there is a different energy being present and doing it live as opposed to just reading the transcripts (although they are wonderful for when I can’t make it). I feel like chat gives us an extra leg up in doing the program.

** Radiant Recovery Store **
David manages the Radiant Recovery Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.
I heard about Kathleen's "Finding a Safe Place" CD and when the budget
allowed it, I made a point of ordering it. It couldn't have come at a better
time. It arrived at a time when I was really concerned about one of my grown
sons. A couple of lapses in judgment could lead to some very serious
long-term consequences.
I had not been sleeping well that week, so I was pretty off-balance when all
this happened. I'd been searching my food journal for clues, keeping my
sleep journal stats carefully, and I suspect the change of seasons plus my
husband's and my different temperature preferences were part of it.
At the height of my distress, here comes my package from Radiant Recovery! I
started using that CD that very day. I liked the fact that it didn't ask me
to imagine my ideal life, or make any particular demands of me. All I needed
to do was imagine myself feeling safe. The second time I listened to it, it
was soothing to the point of tears. I was a much calmer person when we went
to see our son than I would have otherwise been.
The best part of all is that I slept all the way through the night for two
nights now! I will add "meditation CD" to my sleep journal as part of my
routine for good sleep.
In my unhealed days a challenge like this would have sent me straight to
chocolate. Even more recently I would have started snacking on cheese and
whole grain products. This time my Step 3 is steady and I'm getting good
sleep, so I'm sending this out to YLD and the Radiant Sleep group.
I would encourage anyone to get this CD and see what it does for their
program. If I feel this good after only two days, imagine what 30 days will
bring!
Lora
Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Our Online Groups**
The Radiantdiabetes group is where we talk about the different aspects of managing diabetes while following the guidelines of the RR program. As you might imagine, it is a little more difficult to keep our BS levels in a good range than it is for people who don't have diabetes. We do this with humor and lots of sharing. If you have diabetes, pre-diabetes, or someone you love has them and you would like to get more information, as well as support and encouragement, please come join us.
Or come to the group page to see all our groups. http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Numbers**
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.
We were recently having a conversation in the weight loss class
about tightening up the steps. One of the class members ranked
the quality of each step as a 90% or 100%. Then she averaged the
seven steps to get a sense of how she was doing. Her average was 90%.
Connie chimed in and said that kind of math doesn't work in this instance.
She talked about how the steps are cumulative. And that when you did
the math a different way, the actual score was 68%.
Some of us, including me, said, WHAT are you talking about! I asked her to
try again. Intuitively, I knew she was onto something. But this explanation is a winner.
A quick Google search didn't show up any high-level intro
explanations of quality and reliability in steps, so I'll just make up
an example. First I'll use one for an everyday manufacturing process,
and then I'll talk about our 7 steps.
For the everyday manufacturing, say Connie decides to make a DVD
about Warrior Wellness available at her web site.
The steps to get the DVD from the manufacturer to the person, are:
- DVD maker sends the DVDs to Connie's mail room (LOL)
- Connie takes orders from the net and gets them ready to ship
- The shipper, say the US mail, ships to the person
- The person gets it
- The person can play it! yay!
What we want is, 100% of the DVDs getting from the manufacturer to
the person. But let's say each step has 10% problems:
- 10% of the DVDs get squished when Connie drops the box in her mail
room to sign the invoice
- 10% of the addresses entered on Connie's web site are off somehow
- 10% of the people's mailboxes are ripped off from local drug guys
stealing identities, and they rudely toss the DVD
- 10% of the CDs don't work in the person's DVD player somehow
(Connie has el cheapo manufacturer)
So, you'd think, well okay, each step is 90% there, so my customers
should be 90% happy right? But let's follow 100 DVDs.
- After Connie drops the box of DVDs, there are 90 DVDs on the way
to the customer. (90% of 100)
- After step 2, wrong mail address, there are 80 DVDs (90% of 90
DVDs)
- After step 3, the mail theft, there are 72 DVDs on the way to the
customer. (90% of 80)
- After step 4, unplayable DVDs, there are 63 DVDs that actually get
to the customer. (90% of 72)
So of those 100 DVDs starting out, only 63 got to my customer. That
makes a "reliability" of 63% for the end-to-end process. But I
thought each step was 90% ! well, it is. Still, if what I want is
DVDs to customers, I find a way to tighten those steps.
This happens to EVERY process where the later steps depend on the
reliability of the earlier steps.
What I think is hard to understand until it's experienced , is that
our steps really truly DO depend on each other. No one else in the
diet world talks about this and that's why they all say, make these
zillion changes all together.
And, our steps each have smaller steps, so imagine the opportunities
to get a little off. Here's just ONE path.
- Breakfast. Protein is 90% of what it needs to be.
- Journal. Writing 90% down, but maybe the 10% not written, is what
happened after breakfast with light protein! So now I lost a little
feedback.
- 3 meals, 90%. Lunch had "justa" whites and it was early. Somehow
I was "extra hungry" today but I don't make the connection to
breakfast.
- Vitamins. 90%. I ran out of vitamin C days ago and keep forgetting
to pick some up. Hence, my food is not metabolized quite as well. I'm
a little hungry.
- Browns. 90%. By dinner I feel off and resentful and have my
browns and then some.
- Sugars. 90%. More justas. I make the family a program-friendly
dessert and have more of it than is appropriate for my plan right now.
For me, this would be a day for overeating either at dinner or at
spud time.
I might THINK "oh, my program is 90% on" but, that evening sure FEELS
like a not-so-good, only 50% radiant day, and sure enough, the idea
of multiplying instead of averaging, matches what I'm feeling.
Connie
