Hi {!firstname_fix}

I saw a HUGE Robin sitting right outside the window, yah! This is a good sign. And then one morning last week, I went out with the dogs and I could hear a deep hum in the trees and grass as they were practising for spring. Nothing evident yet, but a pink cast to the branches, but the air is different. The next day it was grey on white and snowing. I thought,'Oh goodness, this is the hardest part.' But I see beach grass now rather than drifting snow. It is dried and withered, but I am optimistic.

We started the step 7 class. I had been doing notes from the last time I did it - which was quite a while ago. We had a lot of people in the class. That in itself is fun. I asked them to speak of what step 7 is about. The answers about knocked my socks off. Here is my favorite:

Step 7 is like, after having thought for your entire life that there are only 4 color crayons--red, yellow, blue, and BLACK--you get handed a box of Crayola 64's (yes, the one with the handy-dandy sharpener in the back LOL) and told, "Paint the colors of your life." A teensy bit scary and a whole lot wondrous. Ann Margaret

I think I am going to add a Step 7 segment to my Ranch presentation. What we are learning is too exciting not to share. A couple of notes about 2008 Ranch: If you are a guy, come early. We are going to do a special guy's meeting on Friday. If you have children you would like to bring, they will have company. We have some children coming as well. And most important, if you are thinking of coming, but haven't signed up yet for whatever reason, please make sure to call the hotel ASAP and reserve your room. The Special Block of Radiant Recovery rooms will go off the docket Tuesday and I would hate for you to have to pay rack rate.

I am slowing down the class schedule a bit to let everyone catch up and catch their breath from all our new learning. This class will begin Wednesday, March 19, 2008. Please click on the name of the class you wish to join and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1: The Art of Breakfast is our foundation class to get you started. This is the BEST class for beginners. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.

This class will begin Wednesday, March 26, 2008. Please click on the name of the class you wish to join and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 3: Three Meals is perfect for getting to know what is involved in the lynch pin of your program. Step 3 is pretty complex. This class will give you a guided tour and lots of special hints on how to make it successful.

The class schedule is on line. Click here to see what is planned. Please do not sign up for classes that are not yet scheduled.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. The classes are done online and you do not have to be at your computer at any set time. It does not matter whether you are in the US, Europe, the Far East or Australia, you simply respond on your own time. And although I advertise that the classes are one or two weeks, sometimes we are a little flexible and they may run longer.

And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Please feel free to pass this week's newsletter on to your friends and family. Don't forget to let me know what you like and would like to see me cover.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recoveryć website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

** Testimonial for the Week**

We often say that step three is the hardest of all the steps - there is so much more to it than just the three meals and such a lot comes up for us around meeting our needs and saying 'no'.

To balance this out, though, there are so many reasons I love step three - for me it was life changing on many levels. Whenever I started a diet in the past I would get a big buzz from 'being in control,' but of course there would be the corresponding devastation when I couldn't sustain whatever weird combination of foods were being foisted onto my body. On step three the feeling of being in control was softer but it lasted, and it kept on building. Looking after myself really raised my self esteem and inner security. This was genuine 'control' coming from a loving and self caring place and the feel good factor just kept right on going. (smile)

Step three raised issues for me on getting my needs met and I had to stop being the invisible family servant. Our usual family get together on Sunday ceased to be a 'cook when everyone turns up' and became 'dinner is at 5.30, if you want it be there'. To my surprise nobody died, nobody went insane, they all said 'ok fine' and turned up around 5. Next I began to say 'sorry but that doesn't work for me' and we ate at lunchtime instead of grabbing something at 3 pm when it was convenient - I ate lunch and stopped feeling like a martyr or a sugar crazed freak.

The three lots of protein a day worked fairly quickly on my serotonin - I became calmer and some days I even felt happy. My blood sugar evened out and I no longer turned into Godzilla at 4 pm. As I listened to my journal, shopping trips became an absolute doddle - I knew exactly what I needed and which aisle to go up.

There's a lot more but this is getting long - I just wanted to say that the hassle is reeeeaaaalllly reeeaaallly worth it.

**Radiant Recovery Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

A quick note about last's week's getting started special promo. Sorry I did not make the international shipping issue clear. The shipping is free within the US. Outside of the US we can offer a $5 shipping savings on the starter pac and $10 savings on the deluxe pac.

I have had some newly pregnant women ask me about which fish oil to get so I thought it would be good to say a little about the different oils we carry.

proepa ProEPA - Nordic Naturals ProEPA, one of the industry's highest concentrations of EPA from fish,is enhanced with natural lemon oil in both the soft gel capsule and oil for great lemon taste. ProEPA is molecularly distilled for purity and concentration, and has added rosemary extract for superior freshness. This high concentrate formula provides excellent nutritional support for the body to manufacture vital series 3 prostaglandins, and is 'repeat' and 'odor free.
prodha ProDHA - DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid, and is an essential building block of brain and nerve tissue. DHA can not be synthesized by the body, and therefore must be obtained by a diet high in deep-sea cold water fish.

DHA, which constitutes approximately 40% of the brain, supports brain development during the last trimester of pregnancy when the unborn child's demand for neurological growth increases greatly. If added to the mother's diet, it can help prevent the depletion of the mother's store of DHA, and support the developing baby's essential fatty acid needs. Currently, the proposed Adequate Intake of DHA for pregnant and lactating women is 300 mg. per day. (ISSFAL)
proomegad ProOmegaD - ProOmega Liquid offers a high concentration of both EPA and DHA, along with 100% daily value of vitamin D. This is perfect for those of you who live in areas with not a lot of sunlight.
children's dha DHA Junior - Nordic Naturals DHA Junior is a small, chewable cod liver oil supplement flavored with strawberry essence. DHA Junior is a delicious way for children to supplement their diet with the essential brain nutrient, DHA. Molecularly distilled for purity, DHA Junior contains only naturally existing vitamins A and D. This one is good for developing brains.

For children two years and older.
proefajr ProEFA Junior - Everyone needs Omega fatty acids, especially young, developing minds! Nordic Naturals ProEFA Junior provides a full spectrum of Omega fatty acids necessary for brain and eye development and maintenance, as well as mood, focus, learning ability, and overall well-being. Taste-tested by kids and teens, these lemon-flavored chewable capsules are perfect for ages five through teens. This one is great for kids who have a hard time paying attention.

pycnogenol And if you are taking fish oil, Kathleen recommends also taking Pycnogenol to strengthen cappillaries and protect you from bruising.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Our Online Groups**

Most of us underestimate the importance of breakfast and try to do all the steps in the first week. When that doesn't work, we begin again. We concentrate on Step 1, breakfast, and find our lives begin to change.

The RadiantBreakfast list is a great place to learn the nuances of breakfast, build a strong foundation for the rest of the steps, and find how helpful it is to share our journey with others. It is great for new people and those who have been on the program a long time. Sharing helps everyone.

The awesome thing is we all, Step 1 or Step 7, eat breakfast every single day. How cool is that?

We have had a lot of people join us this week. Do plan on coming over to the breakfast list to talk with others about what you are learning. Since we are doing the breakfast class this week, it is a nice combination.

Or come to the group page to see all our groups. http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**More on the Misery Story**
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Last week's article followed up on the chat we had about misery addiction. This week, I want to show you the process of how these ideas are emerging. I want you to have a sense of the community being a living group that literally shapes how we understand sugar sensitivity and its healing.

So last Wednesday, we took the addiction to misery subject up once again. I wanted to talk about the antidote. I think it is really important that as we define places that are hard, we also make a commitment to solutions.

The chat was amazing. Funny, sometimes a little chaotic and a couple of times we had to stop for a cup of tea to catch our breath. I am going to share the chat with you. I have edited it so it is a little easier to follow. My initial plan was to write up the concepts as I had done with last week’s ideas. Then I thought, no, I want you to see how this process is working.

I want you to catch how dynamic these dialogues are for all of us. So this is a little messier, but you will glimpse something unique. I have changed the names for the participants. I did not change names for people in leadership since I have an ongoing permission from them to quote. I admit to having a little fun with the names.

I will eventually write this up. And then you can be privy to the whole process. The spark, the conversation, the living into it, and the final form. This is why I love chat so much. And I will love hearing your comments.

radiantkd

in listening to  the conversations, it seems as if the new people felt a little confused and overwhelmed by the idea

radiantkd

and those of you who are more steady were really touched by it

radiantkd

sometimes I talk about things that are really for *after* the food

radiantkd

my dilemma is that now we have quite a few people who are ready to hear this stuff

radiantkd

and want to learn about these kinds of things

radiantkd

so what I am hoping is that you can help me help the newbies not get spooked

radiantkd

breakfast first, not misery :)

radiantkd

I think doing the food really helps the *misery* factor

radiantkd

and....

radiantkd

I think if we have an old pattern of reverting to it, it does create a brain map

radiantkd

so it can be the default response unless we make a choice to redirect

MaryAnn

Well, I can certainly testify that doing the food can change that map!!!

Sue CO

but without steady food - it's really not a choice yet....right?

radiantkd

well it is always a choice, LOL

radiantkd

but it is way harder

Sue CO

got it!

radiantkd

because you will feel But my LIFE is miserable!!!!

Martie

and distracting from focusing on the step you're on

Ann

I was able to get out of the misery trap and I am just on step 3.

MaryAnn

There is something about the body understanding and releasing that is independent of the mind understand

radiantkd

once you start hearing this stuff, it will blow your mind how pervasive it is

Connie

the cracked bowl - you can choose to hold happy thoughts but they leak out!

Connie

doing the food makes a strong singing bowl

Bessie

do you mean how pervasive the misery addiction is?

radiantkd

but even the awareness shifts something I think

radiantkd

at the let me tell you how bad it is

radiantkd

energy

Peggy J.

I agree, if you really listen it is EVERYWHERE

radiantkd

so I think we practice

Connie

definitely a practiced skill

Mitzie

teeter-totter describes it for me.

radiantkd

the first thing is to hear it

Hildie

tetter totter is a perfect description Jo!

radiantkd

and realize it for what it is

radiantkd

catastrophizing

radiantkd

focusing on empty rather than abundance

radiantkd

what else

Connie

when my DD hears that she says go have a turkey sandwich

Connie

and that's to her friends!

Peggy J.

focusing on the can't and not the can

Bessie

Awesome Connie

Hanna

This whole brain re-mapping... is it accurate to make it simple and think of it as simply facing a different direction?

Maxie

focusing on worst case scenarios (the news is full of this)

Connie

well maybe a bit impatient Bessie! she's a judger, LOL

Gabriella

yes - both in myself and in conversations with others

Jozelle

oh, yes....and when I confronted the person they said that they love to complain!

Terri W

thanks

Vivian

sure, misery in newspaper

radiantkd

how many heard yourself doing it

Marthamarie

most on the news

Hanna

Yes, in many forms and places and in myself a little

Cherie

I did.

Peggy J.

not this week smile.

Petrie

On the radio news- the same thing over and over

Elaine

not this week for me either

Patti

honestly, I did but grew from it big time

Moselle

I heard myself start

Hanna

Not as much because I was so aware of facing a different direction, I think.

Maxie

I do it waaaaaay less now, and I hear it sooner

Vivian

not this week for me either

Jozelle

\I tried........then, posted to you all and left the pity party

Petrie

Not me

RubieMay

I started to, but then realized I was doing great, that I'd done the baby step just right.

Terri W

I did

Connie

some of my chores start that way - not for long though

radiantkd

it is amazing to me, how quickly we can step out of it once we hear it

Gabriella

that's what I found....once I heard it....I could shift it.

Bessie

I can't tell if that's me right now or not...maybe. I'm trying to be solution oriented

Hanna

I think the quickly might be dependent on doing the food, though.

radiantkd

things can be bad or hard

Petrie

Yes, I turned it off once I heard it

Kath

there is a difference between stepping out of the misery thought patterns and denying that a bad situation is happening though, right?

radiantkd

but the shift can make all the difference

radiantkd

right, RubieMay

radiantkd

this is not denial

RubieMay

That's exactly how it felt this week.

radiantkd

feeding misery is very different from feeling hard stuff

Maxie

right, things can be hard and we can be with them without *adding* misery

Kath

this is realistically looking at things and choosing to see the good

Hanna

This is incredible, really.

Bessie

Right...things are hard but I am optimistic and diligent

radiantkd

I think when we step out of misery addiction, we can actually feel pain more deeply

Jozelle

That's for sure!

radiantkd

or choosing to see the hard part without making it bigger

Connie

because you have to be more present

Jo

but it's different from positive thinking, too

Petrie

and not telling the same sad story over and over again

radiantkd

it is different from positive thinking

radiantkd

that feels like an artificial override rather than a shift

Jo

right

Cherie

Kathleen, intuitively, it's true.

Patti

positive thinking feels like make believe, pretending

Jo

I agree, Patti

MaryMitzie

For me, it has been feeling the bad stuff, but not getting stuck there and that makes me able to see the good stuff at the same time

Connie

I never did fake positives

Gabriella

I had done affirmations in the past...never stuck...this is different...more like a change in thought direction.

radiantkd

so let's go back to the idea of affirmations

Mitzie

ok

radiantkd

first of all

radiantkd

I think we start with *hearing* a misery pattern

radiantkd

can you all do that for yourselves now?

radiantkd

but mighty

Gabriella

yes

MaryMitzie

mine is not subtle!

Maxie

I know it's there by the feeling in my body

radiantkd

ok, now, I have found that when I hear it, if I laugh at myself

Maxie

if I haven't heard it yet

Mitzie

neither is mine

radiantkd

it really, really helps

Patti

well since we started talking about it last week mine is loud now, lol

Bessie

the laughing removes the shame

radiantkd

right

Petrie

scrubs it right out

Jo

the laughing cuts the ramping up

Kath

a fond chuckle

radiantkd

I keep thinking, oh my you are soooooo skilled at this

Maxie

laughing short-circuits it

Patti

I haven't been able to laugh yet, hopefully next time it comes around

RubieMay

I had that experience recently, too and that's exactly what happened!

Mitzie

I find that to be true - laughing that is.

radiantkd

yes, I thought a lot about the scrubbing image

Hanna

Oh, I like that, RubieMay... I didn't know where the humor could come from.

Jo

right, Maxie, puts it to ground

radiantkd

it really helped me

radiantkd

sticky, sticky, better scrub

julie

I think it's about getting present vs. being caught up in the drama/story

Terri W

When I heard it this week it made me stop (mentally) and ask myself what is going on?

radiantkd

I was chuckling in the car

Hanna

I've been laughing with no particular thought behind the laugh LOL

Bessie

I like scrubbing my brain...sometimes it gets so sticky, but then it feels so fresh after

Maxie

yah I like the scrubbing image

Jo

goo-gone :)

Cherie

kd, I worry that it might say something important.

Bessie

yes! Goo-gone, Jo!

MaryMitzie

I like the scrubbing bubbles image

Patti

laughter = scrubbing?  is that what you're saying?

radiantkd

rooftop!!!

radiantkd

yes, patti

MaryMitzie

little smiley faces zooming around

Maxie

take a scrubbing bubble bath!!

Bessie

brain bath

Connie

one little giggle won't do it

radiantkd

but I added an image of scrubbing the lattice in my brain

Kath

That you should listen to the misery in case there is a real message in there Teresa?

radiantkd

MaryMitzie, I love that

Hanna

LOL My bubbles are wearing roller skates

Connie

remember the laugh machine

Mitzie

#NAME?

Cherie

kind of, I have many parts of me that want a voice, even if negative

Vivian

that's great, Carol!

Kath

I think that will change as you do the steps, things seem to come into focus at the best time to deal with them

radiantkd

can you say more about what you mean

Hanna

Great point, RubieMay

Cherie

RubieMay, I hope so, it can be so difficult.

Connie

my voice stayed - but my impression changed

Cherie

Well, I have parts of me, that are from the past, that I want to honor - this is kind of going out on a limb for me.

radiantkd

can you say more?

radiantkd

yes, I totally understand

radiantkd

it is important to give a voice to those parts

Jo

Is it like losing a part of yourself if you lose it?

radiantkd

even if they are negative

radiantkd

yes?

radiantkd

but for some of us, it has more charge

Carolyn

none of this makes sense to me

radiantkd

let me try an example

radiantkd

that is concrete

radiantkd

let's say I hate being fat

Jozelle

well, that's me!

radiantkd

every day I think about how much I hate it. I stew about it

Carolyn

me too

radiantkd

I munch about not having clothes, having a hard time getting up

radiantkd

weigh too much

Petrie

Sounds like misery to me

Patti

no one will ever love me...

radiantkd

right

Bessie

if only...

Hanna B

what you resist persists

radiantkd

my god, my stomach is HUGE!!!!!

Jozelle

I just said that today!

Patti

I'll never have a life like so and so....

Petrie

and you tell many people the same story

radiantkd

I have nothing to WEAR!!!!!

Jozelle

Yep, went to Goodwill

radiantkd

ok, so the facts are you are fat

radiantkd

you need new clothes and you can get them

Carolyn

right

Cherie

and you rehearse it endlessly

radiantkd

and you need new clothes and you have flabby muscles

Jozelle

and I did get some cute clothes lol

radiantkd

and so you can  get new clothes and exercise

radiantkd

right,

Carolyn

ok

radiantkd

that is different from doing misery addiction

Petrie

or you get clothes that are too small

radiantkd

LOLOL now that would feed it wouldn't it, bingo!

Peggy J.

now that is torture misery Petrie

Hanna

much like focusing on the solution rather than the problem, yes?

Patti

right

Kath

actually buying new clothes that fit would be too proactive for the misery

radiantkd

that is reinforcing how horrible life is

Kath

so we avoid it

radiantkd

it is an energy thing

radiantkd

being miserable isn't helping anything

Maxie

goes round and round, like a broken record

radiantkd

except your BE

radiantkd

LOL

Cherie

what you give your energy too counts

Jozelle

is that now why I am doing my hair cute and looking pretty good lately and people are complimenting me even tho I am still fat.

Carolyn

sticky be

radiantkd

but then it wears off and you need more

Peggy J.

and that is spiking so that is no good

radiantkd

being miserable evokes BE

radiantkd

it is why you go back to it

Jo

and misery + drama = still more BE

Bessie

so even when you choose to leave the misery, there might be problems in the form of BE withdrawal?

radiantkd

when you are tolerant, you don't feel it as *good*

Carolyn

just needed

radiantkd

it is like when you use sugar all the time, you don't get high

radiantkd

you just feel bad when you are in withdrawal

radiantkd

so what Bessie is saying is right on target

Kath

it only papers over the potholes in the road

radiantkd

when you step out, you feel worse first

Bessie

how long does this last?

Carolyn

so do da food

radiantkd

depends on how big the addiction has been, LOLOL

Bessie

well thanks a lot! LOL

Connie

well and you are adding in good stuff at the same time

radiantkd

yes, adding in good stuff helps HUGE

radiantkd

the scrubbing bubbles

radiantkd

laughing

radiantkd

doing things even when you are fat

Bessie

duct tape on misery thoughts

MaryMitzie

:)

radiantkd

for misery detox?

Carolyn

laughter units

radiantkd

laughing

radiantkd

laughter units!!! perfect

Kath

at least 3 good things to write in the gratitude section

radiantkd

big misery needs big laughter

Cherie

talking to the little black nose on the misery puppy

radiantkd

kissing it

Gabriella

I want to add \laughter units\" to my journal.......:)"

Jim

laughing, reframing, soft BE activities

Connie

like if you choose to not be miserable, and then you get sad because you're in withdrawal - then it is time to laugh

Bessie

laughter, support, duct tape, food, dog's and cat's noses = misery antidote
