Hi {!firstname_fix}

Well, my time in San Diego was restful and fruitful. I learned lots at the brain conference. You will be hearing more about that over time. I loved dog beach at Delmar. There were a gadzilion dogs running in the waves. I went to Nordstrom, I ate fish and I sat on the terrace of the La Valencia Hotel and had a wonderful lunch. As you get this, I will be asleep on the Superchief somewhere crossing the desert.

Ok, this is the last call for Euro Ranch. We are really, really excited to be doing our second Ranch in England. We have a lovely hotel in Salisbury which is southwest of London and right near Stonehenge. I love this area. Wonderful people are coming. If you want to come, sign up now (smile).

These classes will begin the week of September 10, 2007. Please click on the name of the class you wish to join and it will take you to the registration page:

Step 1: The Art of Breakfast is our foundation class to get you started. Learn all four parts of step 1 in a structured way. Learn how to progress through them with enjoyment. Let us support getting your program off to a fabulous start.

Diabetes is a special class for those of you who have been diagnosed with Diabetes 2 or with prediabetes. This class will help you make sense of what you need to know about adapting the program for your special needs.

Using Radiant Resources is for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.

These classes will begin the week of September 17, 2007. Please click on the name of the class you wish to join and it will take you to the registration page:

The Obesity Myth is a class that I only do twice a year. If you have issues with your weight or your body image, this is the class for you. Come and see how your self image has been shaped by our cultural messages about body size. The last time we did this class, we had an incredible time.

Brain Chemistry: Beta Endorphin is one of our most popular classes. It will teach you the core of the science behind the program. This is the outline for a critical part of sugar sensitivity, why you act the way you do and what you can do to change it. I love this class and so do all the people who have taken it. Somehow BE rocks!

Step 2: Introduction to Journaling will teach you the basics of journaling. The class will give you step by step instructions in how to record your food and feelings in a way that gets you excited.

Step 5: Browning Your Family is one of our favorites. Learn the art of whole grains. Get lots of information that you won't find anywhere else. I picked the brains of one of the world's leading *brown* experts for this class.

Radiant Store Tour is a free guided tour of the store. David will be leading this class so if you want to get to know the guy that makes it all work, come sign up. This is his first teaching experience, so you can show your support for the work he does to keep you happy.

The class schedule is on line. Click here to see what is planned. Please do not sign up for classes that are not yet scheduled.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. The classes are done online and you do not have to be at your computer at any set time. It does not matter whether you are in the US, Europe, the Far East or Australia, you simply respond on your own time. And although I advertise that the classes are one or two weeks, sometimes we are a little flexible and they may run longer.

And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Please feel free to pass this week's newsletter on to your friends and family. Don't forget to let me know what you like and would like to see me cover.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery® website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

As you keep your journal you can discover that there is a direct correlation between what you are eating and how you are feeling.

** Testimonial for the Week**

Hi, Jeannie,

You said "Good for you for making food your number one priority--with that in mind, what can you do to get back on track sooner rather than later?"

I was scratching my head trying to figure out what you meant, but then when I re-read my message, I realized that you didn't know specifics, so you wouldn't know why my timing is off.

It's not about journaling. I've journaled faithfully, just not right after each meal, and I haven't written down as many feelings as I would like, but the journal is not why my timing is off. When I re- checked my journal last night after posting, I was surprised to see I had actually logged more than I had remembered. (smile)

My timing problem is simply due to a schedule change and having to make adjustments. I work until 5 pm every day and my DD stays at her school for an after-school program. By the time I get to pick her up, it's 5:45 or 6:00, so by the time we have walked the long walk home, we don't arrive until 6:15 or so, and I still have to cook. I have no microwave, so I have to cook on the stove, but I can still cook a decent meal (if not exciting) in about 15 minutes. I had to leave work a little late on Tuesday, so dinner wasn't on the table until 6:45... and I usually eat at 6.

I'm literally en-route during my normal dinner time this week.

I discovered last year that it works extremely well for me to go straight home (it's one more stop on the subway), walk the two short blocks home, and get dinner started. I pay one of the after school counselors to walk Alana home. This way I beat her home by about 1/2 hour, I can start dinner, sit down for a few minutes and then by the time she gets home I'm calm and relaxed.

Before I started doing this, I was stressed out and tired by the time I got home, dinner was late, and I was often snippy with Alana. This simple change is well worth the money I have to scrape out of the budget, and seems to make a tremendous difference in my interactions with my daughter.

As it's the beginning of the year and the counselors have changed, I have spoken with the head counselor to get some folks lined up, and she said she should have it worked out by Friday.

Last night I decided to purchase program friendly meals for us from a restaurant by my work to take home. This allowed us to eat dinner by 6:15... an improvement from the 6:45 dinner time the night before. Both nights, though, I had a snack to tide my over until dinner.

I think I'll do the same tonight (take home already prepared food). I'll prepare salads for us from our work cafe and ask them to grill me some chicken to take home. Chick peas can be my brown, and Alana will eat crisp bread. I'll do something similar tomorrow night, weekend is fine, and then hopefully by Monday we'll have someone to walk home with Alana.

So... that's a long-winded way of saying "I'm on it." LOL

Hugs,
Joy }{

For those celebrating Rosh Hashana, carrots play an important part. Here is my program friendly version for "sweet" carrots. And for those of you not celebrating, they are yummy for any time.

MAPLE ORANGE GLAZED CARROTS

  • 12 medium carrots
  • 2 T. light tasting olive oil (or butter)
  • 2 T. orange juice
  • grated zest from one small orange
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 T. alcohol-free maple extract
Peel the carrots and then slice into 1/4 inch pieces. Place carrots in a covered vegetable steamer over boiling water for 10 minutes or until they are tender. Remove from heat and set aside. In a large saucepan, heat the oil. Add orange juice, orange zest, steamed carrots, salt and nutmeg. Stir to coat and cook until heated through. Remove from heat and add maple extract., mixing well. Serve immediately.

If you have any concerns about your weight, do take the Obesity Myth class. It is a wonderful way to start the journey. And I am excited about the topics I will be adding to the chat schedule. I will be discussing the material I have learned at the neuroscience conference... how naps affect your weight, how caffeine changes your brain profile....(smile), things like this.

**Radiant Recovery Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery Store. He is also Kathleen’s oldest son.

I know that I told you our George's Original Shake was on the way. I had everything in place, all your orders set to go and got an email from the manufacturer telling me they pushed production back a week. I am very, very sorry about this. Kathleen and I will be doing some major problem solving once she gets back. It is simply not ok.

But we do have Restore and Junior on hand. And we have mixer bottles and flavors. So I will maintain a sense of calm, hope you will, and we will do the best we can,.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Our Online Groups**

The Radiant Journal list is a source of helpful information and support with journaling. On this list we talk about how to get started with the journal, how to start listening to our body and why giving it a voice is so important. We also discuss how to use the journal for detective work in our program and, of course, how to make journaling fun! Right now the list is rockin' with people supporting each other and making big discoveries with their journal. So whether you are just starting out or are looking for a recharge in your journaling, come on over and join in the fun!

**The Power of Our People**
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I wrote this is 2004. But it is something I have been thinking about all week. So I thought it would be fun to republish it.

As you know I was up in Washington a few weeks ago at a tribal gathering of the Lummi Nation. This week I have just come home from White Earth, which is the home of the Annishinabe people, also known as Ojibwes and Chippawa. I had been invited and gone to speak about our work. But something happened while I was there. The experience of being in the culture moved me deeply.

The nations have a *people* who have been connected and share a heritage and culture and land. American white people do not have a people in this way. Most of my life I have thought about my family history and how it shaped me.

But when I was with the native people, I thought about our community in a different way. We come together because we share a biochemistry. We have a *family* of shared experience; the pain of being outside, of not being understood, of trying to make sense of things and feeling that we cannot find our way.

We come here, and something happens. It is not obvious right away. It feels comfortable and welcoming, but we don't realize that something is changing - some sort of rooting in our healing. When I sign books, I often write *Let radiance wrap you and hold you*...this is something I mean and something I have experienced. But the meaning of that idea, of this as radiance wrapping our people, is bigger than any of us imagined.

Listen to Ted. His letter is like thousands I get each year. This is your community, your healing. And every day I give thanks to the creator for it!

Warmly,
Kathleen

Hi all, my name is ted... and I'm not new to this program, only this part of it. For me this program is not about God, it's not about why it took 64 yrs to get here, or the horrible pain I've endured over the years. It's about getting another chance to get it right. It's all about the food. If I get the food right my life will unfold the way it was supposed to. By doing the food my mind is clearing, the mental pain has stopped and my knees have stopped burning. I don't know why I'm here now, with you all, or why it took so long for me to find out what was wrong with me. I'm here now and that's all that matters. After 50+ yrs of knowing something was wrong with me I finally have the answer. I never stopped searching, not ever. I went to AA and got sober, I went to Christian crusades and got saved, and I tried every diet and self help program I could get my hands on……and nothing worked, not for long anyway……and low and behold I stumbled onto this simple program. Tried it once and failed, but for some reason I returned and I finally GOT IT……it's the food…I am a sugar addict and if I do the food right I am right…I have never experienced a change the likes of which I am going through now. I have embraced this program with every ounce of my being and will never look back. My on-going recovery has been in direct proportion to my obedience to this simple program. The better I work it the better I feel. I don't really know how I got here but I am thankful I'm here and here I'll stay…just doing the food and smiling……hugs to all ted
