Re: gastric bypass - Perpetual LOW IRON!!!

Here are the two things I know about iron:
Vitamin C enhances iron absorption
Calcium inhibits iron absorption (so does the tannin in tea)

Since too much iron runs in my family, I try to have dairy products or take a calcium pill when I eat foods high in iron, and I take my vitamin C with a low iron meal. But you would want to do the opposite - take vitamin C with high iron foods or iron supplements and avoid dairy products at that time.

: Bren,
: I had gastric bipass several years
: ago. This program is what saved
: me, not the surgery! Not only is
: it doable, it is a great necessity
: and a God send.

: However, I am now plagued with
: consistent anemia due to my
: inability to process iron. This is
: very common with post-bipass
: patients (over 50%!!!). No matter
: how much iron I take, I STILL am
: low iron!!! The only suggestion my
: doctor has is getting iron
: injections in hosptial. no.

: Any suggestions would be MOST
: appreciated!!!
