Carolyn,
The only time I have not 'needed' the potato was a week I spent at Ranch a couple of years ago and I was outdoors in lots of bright sunshine during the days -- and what happened was that I started having freaky, scarey dreams.
That didn't happen last year, though, not sure why not.
As Kathleen said, you get to play around with it and see for yourself.

hadn't realised a spike could
: be due to having a very low amount
: or already having enough.
: I am getting funny effects from it
: too right now so also need to work
: it out. I had a second related
: question to this though. If you
: normally have a low level of
: sunlight in your day (ie live in a
: non sunny country like Scotland
: ) and then unusually spend a
: large part of the day outside in
: blazing sunshine would you reduce
: the amount of potato that night. I
: am definitely getting spikes from
: the potato and not feeling right
: but I particularly noticed it a
: couple of nights ago after
: spending a day outside in sunshine
: thanks
