I put a big "No" sign by the telephone to keep me from signing up for too many volunteer jobs and thus savor some time for myself.
It took awhile to find the right balance.
A lot of my previous volunteering involved taking food/eating out or large "awards " banquets. I learned to say that I would attend/speak after the potluck or just come for the coffee.
