Generally, it's better to have a bit of sugar every day after your meals than to restrict it and then have a big binge. Much less stressful on your system. It sounds like you have been doing the white knuckle restricting, then bingeing thing (and of course, we addicts like that because it's dramatic and gives you a huge high, but then it also gives you a huge low.)
