Kari,
Hi!
I may have a similar situation - I'm in a compromised physical state. Exercise would help me. Yet, I don't find the usual options even remotely interesting.
Like you, I agree that slow and steady is best, yet I spent the winter cocooning because I didn't get my options and routine in place.
I recently started an exercise program that has the potential to be very intense. Yet, I delight in scaling it back to what is do-able for me, and tracking, always tracking my responses, my food. I care about it, and I feel motivated to eat, sleep, and rest my best, so I can go back and do it again.
I actually concealed my participation in this program, from my loved ones. I told them I was going to a spa! haha (I've since told them.)
I've been thinking the past while, about how I would be a much different person if I could receive advice and then live my life, with a choice based on that. If I had exercised indoors, every other day, when the ice coated the sidewalks. So I admit, there is a gap between what I agree is good, and what I actually do.
Something about the exercise program excited me and I drew energy from that. It got me moving, and I am definitely benefitting. I sleep more soundly, and I wake feeling more rested. I have more of an appetite, and I feel 'brighter' when I interact with people.
However, I don't know if it is a long term thing. I may do it for the month, count it as my kickstart, and do something else, now that the weather is warmer. I don't like gyms either... indoors is my last choice, when I could be outside!
Difference is, I didn't ask anyone, before starting my program. I didn't want them to dissuade me!
Sometimes we are like teens, exploring. Is it 'the wrong choice'? If I can accept that there will be consequences (both the appreciated and the unwelcome ones) to my choice of action, and that they were my own doing, I feel confident I can proceed with my choice.
I reserve the option, to change my mind! haha
Best to you, as you consider your exercise possibilities!
