Hi {!firstname_fix}

I hope you have all had a lovely week. I enjoyed the quiet of Christmas. And I placed 2 rescue dogs this week. That always makes me happy...rehabilitating dogs and then having the joy of their having new homes. I suspect my dog life will be quiet for a bit and I can follow up on the last two who are sort of *special needs* dogs.

We are moving forward with the design and content of a revised website. It will be simpler, cleaner and easier to get around. I guess it is like the clutter clearing class...pulling stuff out of the closets, sorting, passion, dusting (smile), and restoring forgotten joys.

As part of this, we want to take a look at the newsletter as well. Naturally, the very best people to ask are those of you who are subscribers, We have wonderful technology these days to ask you what you think. We have set up a poll and would love to have you share your thoughts with us. Go here for it.

Don’t forget to plan for Ranch. This year will be powerful. The agenda will include great information for new people on Friday and then an in-depth discussion of what we are doing in the Healing Insulin Resistance Class. So if you have been struggling with being able to lose weight, this is an unequaled opportunity to get the information you need to supercharge your progress.

I am also going to offer again a special class class Getting to Radiant Ranch. It is designed for people on a budget who feel that they could not possibly find a way to come. The cost of the class will be applied to your Ranch tuition if you complete the class. And the last time we did the class, 100% of the attendees made it...and all of them thought it was an impossible dream when they started.

This class will begin Wednesday, January 7, 2015. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Using Radiant Resources (1 week) - is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around all the things we offer in the community. One of our mentors will show you the ropes. Watch for the welcoming email with a link to join the Yahoo list we use as our classroom.
Radiant Fat Terror Class (2 weeks) - is a special class for members of YLD in the Radiant Recovery Community who are very concerned about their weight. This will address the feelings and fear you have about your weight and doing the program. Now, this is NOT just for people who are overweight. Sometimes *fat terror* is far more prevalent in people who are slim. So we are gonna work on both sides of the equation.
Getting to Radiant Ranch (8 weeks) - is an ongoing 8-week class to provide skills, motivation and support in getting to Radiant Ranch.

This class will begin Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

What Else is Embedded in the Steps (2 weeks) - This is a special class for all you newcomers who want to move on ahead quickly or for those of you who came to the program *already doing everything*. Find out what else is in the steps besides the food. Get the inside scoop from the one who wrote them (smile). You do not have to second guess anymore!!
Magical Introversion (2 weeks) - is a class which has grown out of your sharings. You may not realize that we have an extremely high percentage of introverts in the community. Many of you may carry shame about this and not realize what an incredible gift it is. If you would like your self-knowledge to be transformed, this is the class for you.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Words for feelings are not good or bad. They are simply a way to help you understand what is happening.

**Testimonial of the Week **

If anyone *scolds* you about anything, just remember that they work for YOU, and it is perfectly fine for you to say, "You know scolding me is not a useful tool." And your diabetes can be regulated just fine before your weight comes down.

I love this so much Kathleen. With following your advice with this in the past, I have found it very empowering, and so helpful in building the kind of relationships with my docs that *are* the most helpful.

I have also noticed that while we are employing our health care providers, we are asking them for a service - to help, and they do know that and want to. My Dr. used to get pretty cranky of me coming to him for help time and time again, while not showing progress. I know I can get frustrated when people keep asking for my help while not taking my advice.. and I bet my Dr. experiences that even more often than I do. When I started showing up with test results that showed improvement, he totally laid off the weight loss. He's been trained to feel that weight loss will help some, with the idea that obesity causes diabetes. He just doesn't get the sugar sensitivity/addiction info. Well, he didn't back in the day. He is much more of a believer now. The positive results are just undeniable! LOL. What I get now is, "good! - keep doing what you're doing!!" which of course is fabulous to hear. :)

Thank you so much!

Diane

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

Chewed Restore Container I hope you are having a nice holiday season. I wanted to give you a little update on a pricing increase.

As I think you all know, Kathleen has made a commitment to get non GMO, rBGH hormone-free, high-quality ingredients for George’s® Restore. Our manufacturing costs have increased 40% over the past 3 years. We have not passed these increases along to you, but now are at a point were we need to make some changes.

We wanted to work out what would be a fair adjustment, so as of as of Jan 1 we will increase the price by 5%. We will honor the current price through the end of the year. The subscription price will still give you a $6 savings over the one-time price of each jar. Those of you on subscription know that I will also set the shipments to maximize postage cost savings as much as possible.

People regularly tell us that George’s® Restore is by far the best tasting protein powder they have ever had. It has a smoothness that is unequalled. And there are NO scary ingredients whatsoever. What makes it so unique is the proprietary blend that Kathleen spent years developing. It is our flagship product and we are mighty proud of it.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Radiant Kitchen **

This recipe is one of the Radiant Recovery all time favorites. I actually am making it tonight with chicken breasts. I can’t wait to eat it!

Roast Sticky Chicken
  • 4 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. paprika
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp. thyme
  • 1 tsp. white pepper
  • ˝ tsp. garlic powder
  • ˝ tsp. black pepper
  • 1 large roasting chicken
  • 1 cup chopped onion
In a small bowl, thoroughly combine all the spices. Remove giblets from chicken, clean the cavity well and pat dry with paper towels. Rub the spice mixture into the chicken, both inside and out, making sure it is evenly distributed and down deep into the skin. Place in a re-sealable plastic bag, seal and refrigerate overnight.

When ready to cook chicken put it in the Crockpot with the onion and do not add any liquid. As the cooking process goes on it will produce its own juices. Cook on low 8 to 10 hours and it will be falling off the bone tender.

**Radiant YLD **

So I know that you all have heard me speak about the changes that are coming in YLD. I thought I would reiterate them here so if you have any questions, we can talk about it together.

When I first started the YLD program, I saw it as a way to provide support for people who wanted to lose weight. As you know, weight loss is a HUGE motivating factor for a lot of people coming into the program. Many people come feeling like being fat is what is causing the pain. If the fat gets fixed, the pain will go away. And part of the process of YLD is to learn that this is not actually true.

Initially, YLD was designed to have that dialogue. We hold the belief that healing the addiction first is what makes the program different from any other weight-loss program. The idea is to provide a healed place for the discussion and refinement of one's weight-loss plan. The whole theory of the program is to work on weight loss from stability, not desperation. And if you are feeling that you HAVE TO lose weight NOW, then this is not the right program for you because everything we do is to counter that belief.

And over time, those of us interested in weight loss have found we have less and less charge about it. It just gets more and more functional. You wanna do it, here is the map. And chats have moved to more and more of a dialogue about recovery.

**Radiant Living **

We have a new portal for the Radiant Living program. Come check it out here.

The Radiant Living Chat is where we talk about *life* stuff rather than *food* stuff. It started out of a conversation at Ranch last spring when participants said, *We need a place to talk about how our recovery is unfolding after the food is steady.* So we set up this chat and gosh is it fun. We would love to have you join us.

If you would like to join us, you can do that directly below.

**Our Online Groups **

Hi I'm Karen, the mentor for the RadiantStep3 group. This group is all about our very favorite Step 3. This was a tough step for me when I started the programme and it was definitely the hardest! I either forgot to eat meals, ate the most inappropriate, sugar-laden stuff or just grazed my way through the day. It took me ages to master this step, but now I happily eat three meals a day. It's easy and very natural and I never dreamed I would ever say that in my lifetime!

The Step 3 list is a great place to stop by for those who are finding this a challenging step, or who are starting out or who would just like some extra support. We talk a lot about things like: What is a meal, exactly? How do I get my body to cooperate with eating "just" three meals a day? What are some tips to help me with consistent timing? And all sorts of other aspects of this step. We try to make it fun, because... well why not make it fun?? Since being the liaison for this list, I've been thrilled to see so many people come through and "graduate" to the next steps! It's a great place of support... come and join us! (And it matters not if you are new to the step, totally re-doing the step or just shoring up your Step 3 after being further along in the program.)

**Seduction of Busyness **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

I have been hearing about "busy" a lot in the last few weeks.

I have a friend who hasn’t called or emailed for a while. I wrote and said, “Hey, how are you?” and her reply was, “Oh, man, I am so busy, I just haven’t been able to make space to do anything!”

I was at euroranch listening to, “ Whew, I am so tired. I am so busy, my days are so packed, I have no space for anything.”

I hear, “I love listening on the list, but I am not making time for it.”

Or, “I have two small children and spend my day running from one thing to the next.”

I, too, have found myself being called by the rush of “important” things. The push, the seduction. When I connected with the rush, I thought, "whoa, baby, what a sweet little pod of the addiction amoeba is pushing his little head out here…no, no, no.

First I called my daughter. She started with the litany…not now, not sure when, can’t really say. I said, “Now, for five minutes…listen up. I am your mom, put me on the list.” And we talked and she could hear it. And I called my friend, and I said, “ Let’s have some tea” and would not take no for an answer.

I stopped working while having dinner. I sat in the back without a task or a list. I got up from the computer before it was all done. I left the dishes and made some personal phone calls.

I sat with my lists and I said, “Nope, that won’t get done this week, this MONTH.” I went back to meditating. I slowed everything down. I read a novel. I bought a magazine and savored it. I brushed the dogs outside at dusk while the light was going down into golden. I got out a cookbook and read and then made something new. I started texting my daughter so she wouldn’t feel pressured but could feel the connection.

Colette wrote this on the step seven list. I cut and pasted it in my journal.

For me, I was thinking about the buzz. Busy has such a frantic feel about it, and I know that over working, or being overly busy, can be a pod. If I think in terms of recovery, stepping out of that for me is being aware and responsible. There is a difference for me between a swirl of activity and a deep, rich full enjoyable life.

It's a balance. I have responsibilities, because I am a mother, a wife, but I also know how important it is, and how much more available I can be to others if I take care of myself, and have activities...have a life that fills me. Some dreams are on hold now, because I do have other responsibilities. Rating my activities help, and I'm trying to figure out the *5*'s in my life, instead of just randomly filling. It is a juggling act, and something that I do need to return to again and again.

I read a book ages ago, that is a great visual reminder for me. Life was compared to the margins in a book, and without margins, a book would be quite busy and a bit difficult to read...quite a jumble. And if I allow my life to have *margin*, I am also available to listen to the *whispers* in life, and be available for *surprises* or emergencies that life can bring. So for me, I really like to make sure I throw in *margin*, and not have a full page.

Maybe this little article is a plea for the margins…for quiet time in the morning to center, for quiet time in the evening to make sense of the day. As I get older, I totally and absolutely know that most of what I thought was crucial was not. What matters is very different from the stuff that creates “busy.” Let’s think about this one.

Thanks for reading! If you know someone who could benefit from this, feel free to forward it to them.
