Hi {!firstname_fix}

Euroranch has wound down. It was moving and filled our hearts. This year we moved deeper into our healing and recognized how far so many of us have come by doing the food. It will take time for words to come to describe what happened. It was quieter, less structured, more connected. The new people felt welcomed, the returning people felt blessed. The weather was lovely, the food great and the connection wonderful.

This class will begin Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

**Testimonial of the Week **

Doing the food can change things like the "cranky" and the "overwhelm" and the "guilty" and even "being plain old tired" too, I think.

Overwhelmed was a word that appeared in my journal so often as I worked from step 3 to 6. Now - on step 7 - doing the food has taken me to a place where I can problem solve rather than simply put up with things that might not be working. Doing the food has given me the ability to see clearly and work solutions out.

This week, for example, I've been feeling overwhelmed - but this time it is specific - I can clearly see what I am overwhelmed about and yesterday after meditating I sat quietly and came up with some solutions.

I can remember doing step 3 and thinking and sharing that I would have to give up a contract because it didn't work for me. What happened, in fact, was that I did the food and found the contract worked really well for me. I don't think I will keep it for good because it is a lot of work, but right now I need the money and I think I'm learning stuff, too, and so I am sticking with it.

For me, one of the fun parts has been working out how to remain really steady on my food given the work challenges. I have learnt it is doable - some of my solutions I've shared here.

And the steadier I am with my food, the easier the work is too. So I am thinking - if we focus on the food - a lot of the other stuff will work better too.

Karen

**Notes from the Forum **

Great observations Kathy.

You reminded me of the time when I was having a rebel about step 3. I was eating lunch far too late and knew I had to pack it and bring it in to work to eat before going home. Sulked a bit. But trying it was a revelation. I felt all steady and happy, instead of stretched and irritable. I didn't have to 'try it for a week and see' - knew the first day. Step 4 list has been great for me in the past for sounding out my potato-practicals.

Glad you are sleeping so well. Let us know how your findings-out go! You have such a willing attitude to it, so impressive.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

As many of you know, I asked David to carry this product after I had heard a good report about it. I told you I LOVED it. I forgot to take the bottle to Florida when I went to visit my brother. Last week, my eyes were itching and burning and feeling really dry. I couldn't figure out why. Finally it dawned on me so I started up again. Two days later, things were fine…pretty amazing.

ProDHA Eye Bottle Here is a testimony to the impact of your input. Last week one of our regular customers told us about a Nordic Naturals product she had tried. It is called ProDHA Eye. She said her ophthalmologist had recommended it for *dry eye* and it was having a huge impact for her. Kathleen read that email and asked me if I had sent in our Nordic order yet. I said, *No, I was doing it that afternoon.* Here is her response:

As I have gotten older, the issue of dry eye has become more of a problem. Living in New Mexico, which is DRY, DRY, makes it way worse. You know I LOVE Nordic products, let's give it a shot. I know it is a bit pricey, but when I think about how much I am spending on eye drops, this sounds way better.

Here is what Nordic Naturals says about it:

  • Added Zeaxanthin and FloraGLO Lutein for ultimate eye protection*

  • 93+% true triglyceride form for optimal absorption of essential omega-3s*

  • Promotes healthy eye moisture and tear production*

ProDHA Eye® combines concentrated omega-3 fish oil with key nutrients that have been shown to protect the eyes and support healthy vision.* The omega-3 DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is more concentrated in eye tissue than in any other part of the body, and is vital to the structure and function of healthy eyes. By supporting healthy inflammatory levels, omega-3s can also help alleviate many common symptoms of eye discomfort such as dryness, pain, and redness.* FloraGLO® Lutein with zeaxanthin has been added to further support the structures of the eye and provide protection against harmful ultraviolet blue light.* ProDHA Eye combines these key eye nutrients in one convenient formula.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

Diane's New England Style Baked Beans

I am a bit of a throw it together kinda cook and go by eye more often than I measure, so this is a collaboration for an actual recipe. :)

  • 2 cans of pinto beans, with the juice.
  • A few slices of bacon, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup apple butter
  • 1 TBS grainy brown mustard or to taste
  • 1/2 of an onion
And from Kathleen:

Here is what I did.
  • I put 2 cans of pinto beans in the crock pot.
  • I sauteed the bacon and one half of a vadalia onion in some olive oil.
  • I mixed the apple butter into the beans and added the mustard.
  • I added the bacon and onion to the beans when they were not quite crisp. I cooked it for about 4 hours in the crock pot.
And it was incredibly good.

I saw a quote the other day, 'Exercising is about rewarding your body with strength and endorphins and not about punishing your body for what you have eaten.'

And then when you add in joy to exercise it takes it to a whole different level! This whole topic is just so fascinating!

**Our Online Groups **

On the Fitness list we talk about how doing the food can support our fitness program and vice versa. Some favorite topics are what to eat when doing intensive exercise when all that's out there commercially are sugar-filled products. We also talk about what to eat before and after morning workouts, and what to do for those folks whose training program requires a twice-a-day workout. We just had a great thread on the necessity of sports drinks and how doing the food is better.

We have runners, walkers, bikers, dancers, aerobicizers, yogis, and many more types of exercise enthusiasts on the list. One of the neat things on the list is people who are recovering from exercise addiction who are learning how to work exercise back in their life in a healthy way. If any of this fits you, well, come on over and join in.

Or come to the group page to find the one that will best support your program: http://www.radiantrecovery.com/list_serves.htm

**Healing Phases **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Patti introduced this concept at a YLD beginner's chat. I was so impressed with the idea, I asked her to write this week's article. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Kathleen

In working through the Radiant Recovery program, working the 7 steps, the question I am pondering is: Do we work a step, get it steady, heal, and move onto the next step without having to refine or go back to the previous steps? And if we do find ourselves going back, because it isn't working any more, does that mean we are doing something 'wrong?' I don't think so; I think we come across 'healing phases,' let me explain why.

I believe that as we work each of the steps there is a sort of healing 'process' that our bodies go through. Meaning in one sense that what we start out doing on that step may not work long term, we may need to adapt what we are doing according to the healing that is taking place within our body.

Maybe we add exercise, or stop eating as much sugar, or there is an underlying healing 'shift' (biochemical) taking place (unseen) where our outward lives haven't changed. Let me say more about this part. I believe that our biochemistry is, as we begin/work through/ and continue on with the steps always 'shifting' towards wholeness/healthy levels. I don't think that we get to a certain step, work it for two weeks, and bam biochemistry is healed. So, sometimes when a person is working a step, and they get it stable, and then they move on to the next step to only find that the previous step may not feel as stable any more, that it is because there is a 'healing phase'(one of a shift of biochemistry) that they may need to address.

So, our body 'shifts' and all of a sudden some part of what we were doing before doesn't work. Maybe we are getting hungry before our next meal, maybe the potato isn't giving us restful sleep any more, or we start feeling emotionally out of balance. Our immediate reaction has often been, 'What am I doing wrong?'

Well, I don't believe that we are doing anything wrong, necessarily. If we checked, and it all looks good, and we checked in with our buds and they don't see anything either, then what does this mean? I believe it means that I simply needed to 'adjust' my program to the changes within my body (whether things such as adding exercise/limiting sugar/etc. or inward biochemical changes/shifts).

For me personally this occurred when I added in a training program. I was no longer able to go 6 hours between meals (I had been able to go 6 hours for years). But, I wasn't doing anything 'wrong.' My body was definitely indeed in a place of healing more, a 'healing phase', it was a good thing - but my meal timing didn't work right any more. I was getting hungry earlier. So I adjusted my meal timing to 5 to 5.5 hours between meals and amazingly everything started working again. The more intense exercise created a 'shift' and I needed to respond to that shift.

Identifying these 'shifts' or 'healing phases,' when fairly early in program can be difficult. Our beta-endorphin levels are sometimes not supportive enough yet to help us to ascertain what is happening with our recovery. For instance, let's say we are going through one of these 'healing phases,, something that was working isn't working any more - we very often become discouraged and frustrated, and then this often leads to giving up, thinking that the program just won't work for us; that somehow we are doomed to a sugar-addicted life forever.

We are not. (smile) Every one of us can have the radiance that is our birthright. And one of the most important things we can do when we feel the way I described in this last paragraph is to reach out in the Radiant Recovery community and share this with our buds. There are those who have walked the path before us, who daily share their experience, strength, and hope. Those who have walked through their own 'healing phases' many times, and can help us walk through ours.

Through connecting with others we can then recognize that the possibility of help exists, and we rediscover the hope we thought we had lost.
