Hi {!firstname_fix}

Java Joe Cup On Saturday, I slept in, and went down to the Farmer's market. I bought some succhine and some rainbow chard, picked up my jug of green smoothie and then went down to Java Joe's for breakfast. I got a paper, ordered an omelet and a decaf latte and had a lovely quiet time. Some of you may know Java Joe's from Breaking Bad, LOL, but honestly, it is just a sweet coffee house with great food.

Then I came home, vacuumed the rugs and saw that the vacuum was not really picking up the dirt. Checked the bag, it had 50 gadzillion pounds of dog hair. Changed that, things worked. Then I wiped down the vacuum because it seemed like it deserved to be clean (smile)...I wonder if that is a ss thing - caring about machines.

It was a nice day, I sat out with my friend who is recovering from a car accident and noticed how green the trees look against the blue sky. I took her a salad for dinner - spinach with orange pieces, avocado, almonds and chicken. I had some for myself when I got home. It was a nice day.

Resting when you are tired may seem like an outrageous idea, but learning to take care of your body is the focus of your path to recovery.

**Testimonial of the Week **

We seem to have a lot of parties and barbecues especially in the summer. One thing that I am beginning to notice is that people, i.e. family, friends, neighbors, are getting so used to the way that we eat that they aren't even surprised or mad that we don't have any sweets or sugary, white stuff at any of our parties. Yesterday we had a big July 4th barbecue, lots of family, friends, neighbors were there. None of the kids asked for any soda, they didn't whine or complain that there wasn't any ice-cream or desserts. We had lots of fresh fruit for dessert and juice with sparkling water to drink. We had ribs, hot dogs, potato salad, fresh green salad, homemade bean dish and tons of fun. It seemed like everyone was just focused on the fun and not the food. We had a huge water fight and then we did fireworks. There weren't any whiny, miserable children or teenagers there, lol. It was a great day.

**Notes from the Forum **

Weekdays I have shake without a second thought - always the same, same is soothing! But the real reason is it is so easy, easy. Funny, as years ago I refused to even try a shake. It didn't appeal at all. Though, even now, my shake is perhaps unusual, thick and in a dish. Which just goes to demonstrate variety in shake I guess.

Days like today when I am working this afternoon I take shake for lunch so its something different for breakfast.

Weekends is sometimes a full English/chili in order to acknowledge time off, leisure time. I like to be a bit different then.

The real different times are if I am lucky and abroad at a hotel where I will have cooked breakfast every day... in order of a bit of luxury. That doesn't happen often enough though.

** Radiant Recovery® Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery® Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

Here is a note that Karen sent from England. For those of you who live overseas, we can help. If you have any questions, just email me. My job is to make you happy.

Restore jar The store .... well I wanted to share this. I live in England and realised I was about to run out of protein powder. So I ordered from 3 places on the same day thinking one would arrive shortly. Well, the George's® Restore arrived the same day as the protein powder I ordered by phone from a UK store (5 days including a weekend) and the online order of protein powder from a UK site still hasn't arrived. Plus pricewise - including shipping - it worked out to be comparable. A huge thumbs up to the store and David.

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

It's grilling time and I thought it would be great to share some great marinades from the Radiant Recipes cookbook.

Marinate small pieces of whatever you are grilling for 1 - 24 hours. The longer the marinating time, the more intense the flavor. Remove meat, fish or tofu from the marinade and cook as desired. Brush a little marinade onto the protein as it cooks for greater flavor. Do not use the leftover marinade without boiling it first. Boil the marinade until slightly thickened and then you can use it as sauce.

Lime Ginger Marinade
  • 1/2 c. olive oil
  • 1/4 c. lime juice
  • 1 T. lime zest (grated lime rind)
  • 1 T. rice wine vinegar
  • 1 T. grated ginger root
  • 1 T. apple juice concentrate
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
In a medium bowl, whisk together all ingredients until well combined. Makes 4 servings.

Teriyaki Marinade
  • 1 c. unsweetened apple juice
  • 1/2 c. soy sauce or tamari
  • 2 T. rice wine vinegar
  • 1 T. balsamic vinegar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 T. freshly grated ginger root
  • 2 tsp. sesame oil
  • 1 T. tomato paste
In a medium bowl, whisk together all ingredients until well combined. Makes 4 servings.

**Radiant YLD **

I have been thinking about the last time I was away from home for 10 days. it is HARD to maintain your program in a hotel room. And even if on step 7, it is easy to slip into thinking that *justa* little white or just a few desserts are ok since it is travel time.

So I have been thinking about commitment to healing and what that means.

At one point in YLD chat we talked about addiction. And that addiction leaves no middle ground - we are either in recovery or we are progressing in addiction. I think we were all touched by the discussion. Let me share a little of the comments made after:

This is from Delse:

Greetings YLDers:

I found last night's chat very motivating. As I understood it, each decision I make is a decision to either walk away from my addiction, or walk towards it. Those are the only two directions I can go.

For example, I am busy this morning. I don't want to take the time to plan my lunch. If I don't, I am making the decision to walk towards my addiction, because without lunch, I would probably stop at a fast food place, and I wouldn't order a salad. So I would be walking towards my addiction.

If I blow off my exercise today, I am making a decision to walk towards my addiction, because my exercise does more than burn calories. It enables me to think and cope.

I am finding this to be a very powerful visual to make my day to day decisions. Anybody else have a comment?

Then Peggy responded:
I think it was a very powerful chat for sure Delse. I also thought about all of my decisions I made today as being about walking toward or away from the addiction stuff...very interesting to see how this changed some of the decisions! Some of it very simple, too. I needed to do a very errands after my deep water running class today . Usually I come right home and eat because it is time to eat at 1:00. I was just going to eat a bit late, but when I thought of which way I was "walking", I decided to stop by home and pick up my portable lunch and eat in the car while doing the errands! I felt so much better (smile)...it really is about each little decision, and not about perfection, or the opposite.
So YLD, more than anything, is about the healing dialogue. The chats are the highlight of my week. I love chats. I love your voices and I love your participation!

The Radiant Step Two list is a source of helpful information and support with journaling. On this list we talk about how to get started with the journal, how to start listening to our body and why giving it a voice is so important. We also discuss how to use the journal for detective work in our program and, of course, how to make journaling fun! Right now the list is rockin' with people supporting each other and making big discoveries with their journal. **Following the Rules **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Hi folks, you know I sent out a letter asking for your input. One interesting thing came up. I got some inquiries from folks who said they have been doing everything *perfectly* and were disenchanted with the program because they hadn't lost weight. So I want to talk about this.

Sometimes I get a sense of people following the rules and doing it perfectly. Everything. But it doesn't include the listening to your body, the mucking around that makes the program become your own. You see there isn't a *perfectly* in this program. There is simply a committed, not a perfect way.

Committed means you show up when you are discouraged. You show up when you are still fat and you think you have tried everything. You show up with a beginner's mind and you say, what does my body say here? What needs to change? What have I tried? Why did it work for a while? What changed?

Committed means you ask the people you trust to help you see things you can't because you are in the middle of it. This is a big one. SS people are not team players. We think we know better. We know how to beat the diets. We ask for *advice*. But not for counsel. And then we ignore it.

Or we fail to ask the ultimate authority - our own body. We say, *Still fat!!! You slug....* and go off and do Atkins. I can't tell you how many letters I have gotten about knowing that Atkins will work and then I will be back.

So what *is* this program anyway? It is accepting on faith something that is so radical, so different from anything we have ever done. Trusting the voices of those who have done it longer. Not done it perfectly, not finished, not all fixed, but those who have hung in there, who are open and willing and are connected. Those who give back. Those who have learned that the heart of the program comes in service. Sitting with one more frightened tired newbie in despair. Or sitting with an old timer who crashed and burned and wants to bail with every molecule of who she is. Or being patient with the one in the middle who is bored and disenchanted.

Rules don't work for that. Heart does. Honesty and tenacity does.

Now here is the bottom line. For some folks the losing weight part is easy. It comes, it works and life is changed. For others, it is a bear. You will go through everything I have written and found you are not losing weight. And then, you decide whether you pitch it because *it* doesn't work or you stay in there as we find out why. We don't have all the answers by a long shot. We are living the solutions. And the edge of our story is pushed out by those of you who are stubborn losers way more than by the success stories.

I don't know if this is making sense. Maybe I am just moved by all those letters you wrote me. But what I CAN tell you - Kathleen is in for the long haul. There are some things I do not know, actually LOTS of things I have not a clue about. I don't know why some of you get stuck. It may be that you haven't done the package, it may be that this package is not the one for your body. It may be that your leptin is inadequate or your delta 5 desaturase in under active. But I do know, if you stick with it, you will be able to hang in there and keep plugging away and having fun along the way.

I am going to. So I hope you don't follow the rules, but you find the program.
