February 3, 2014

I want to say a little about the classes that are coming up. I haven't offered the What Else is Embedded class in a long time. It is a super class to have as part of your knowledge base. It will walk you through the *why* of our saying 'do the steps in order, go slowly.' The food part of the steps are only one part. The PROCESS is key and this class will show you why.

The Fat Terror Class is a new class that I have designed in response to the reality of what most new people feel when they come in and are sometimes faced with the idea of eating more. The idea of *more* literally strikes terror into people who have struggled with weight their whole lives. I want to explore with you where the terror comes from, how it is affected by your biochemistry, your history and the cultural message that the size of your body defines who you are. So if you are a member of YLD, here is a great beginning for you. And if you are not a member yet, this might be a great time to sign on up. This class is the beginning of a number of new YLD offerings.

The Fitness for Weight Loss is another new YLD offering that has emerged out of the Older, Rounder, Willing class where we have been discussing the variables that affect sugar-sensitive people wanting to design an exercise plan that will enhance their weight loss. Typical cardio stress plans will NOT generate weight loss in ss people. Come learn why.

I am excited about both of these new classes and look forward to working with you in them.

These classes will begin Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Using Radiant Resources (1 week) - is a free orientation for those of you who are brand new and would like to find your way around town. Come sit on the top of our double-decker bus for a guided tour. And even if you are not brand new, this is a really fun class to reconnect with all the treats of the community.
What Else is Embedded in the Steps (2 weeks) - This is a special class for all you newcomers who want to move on ahead quickly or for those of you who came to the program *already doing everything*. Find out what else is in the steps besides the food. Get the inside scoop from the one who wrote them (smile). You do not have to second guess anymore!!

These classes will begin Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Please click on the name of the class and it will take you to the registration page:

Radiant Fat Terror Class (2 weeks) - is a special class for members of YLD in the Radiant Recovery Community who are very concerned about their weight. This will address the feelings and fear you have about your weight and doing the program.
YLD Fitness for Weight Loss (2 weeks) - is a class for members of the Radiant Recovery YLD program who wish to refine and integrate their fitness plan into their overall weight loss plan.

The class schedule is online. Click here to see what is planned.

A number of you have asked me how the classes work. Check the class list page for more information on this. And please go read the questions and answers before you write to me. If you have trouble getting through the process, write the tech forum.

Be sure to visit our Radiant Recovery website and Community Forum regularly.

Warmly,
Kathleen

Beta-endorphin is immensely powerful. It can drive you inexorably toward deeper addiction - or raise your spirits to a level of health that you may never have known before.

**Testimonial of the Week **

I had my annual physical and check up this week. My nurse practitioner called me to tell me my cholesterol has gone down from 255-177. Now that's more like it!!! She said she's never seen a drop like that without medicines. I'm so happy right now!

**Radiant Life **

This is total testament to this program, lol. There is NO WAY my day would have gone like it did if not for doing the food.

So, originally I was supposed to play a piano piece for about 20 nursing students while they "walked" to get their nursing caps in a graduating ceremony. Did I mention that I am a beginner piano student who gets nervous very easily in front of people LOLOL??? Well, last night I found out that it was actually 80 people that would be there. It got me for a second, but, breathe, I dealt with it pretty well.

When I arrived today I found out it was actually 200-300 people that I would be playing in front of!!!! Eighty people were graduating, and the rest were friends and family that were attending.

First I'll describe how it would have gone before this program:

I would have freaked out, literally, and gone flush and said over and over 'I just can't do that....'. I would have been FURIOUS with my friend for not knowing this and blamed her for anything that happened after the fact. I might have cried or come really close to it and would have tried desperately to get out of it. In my head I would have been convinced I couldn't do it, no matter what. If I had played anyway, not only would I have messed up, but I probably would have froze and then felt horrible after. I can guarantee my friend and I would have had a major confrontation. Yuck.

But this is how it did happen:

I had a fleeting flash of all of the above, lol, but quickly dismissed it. I realized almost immediately that there was nothing I could do to change it and in the end it really didn't matter. I would be nervous either way (smile). I practiced as much as I could beforehand and tried to visualize just the music and not who would be there. In short, I handled it with grace.

Overall I did great for me, lol. I messed up, but what was great was that I just kept on going and that's the hardest thing for me to do on a normal day! I am very proud of myself and for more than just my playing.

It was a HUGE rush, though, and I'll have to be extra careful these next days. Journal journal journal and spot on with the steps.

Thanks for listening!

Heather D.

**How I Found Radiant Recovery **

Well - Amazon sent me a "books you might be interested in" type email. One of those books was called The Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program. It feels like I've known for years that I'm a sugar addict, but didn't know there was a recovery program. Needless to say, I ordered the book immediately! That was over a year ago. I don't eat sugar any more (or wheat either - discovered, through journaling, that it makes my joints ache, especially in my hips) but have gained some unwanted additional weight. I'm still working on getting really steady on step 7. Will address weight loss hopefully in a few months. At the moment, I'm grateful that I'm no longer hungry all the time with dieting.

** Radiant Recovery Store **

David manages the Radiant Recovery Store. He is also Kathleen's oldest son.

Because I am sharing the recent chat about Journaling, it makes sense to ask David to feature Your Body Speaks once more. The more I use my journal, the more I love it. I recently finished a 90/90 on journaling…I committed to journal carefully for every day for 90 days. Man, did I get a lot of information. There is a method to my madness in every part of how it is designed. It really works!

Please send questions and suggestions. I love hearing from you and truly want to help you do your program better.

**Radiant Kitchen **

This exchange was shared on the Parents' list and the recipe is from Janie.

I would love to have your recipe for the cake you mentioned.

Ok, but remember I totally made this up, lol! You can play with it anyway you want. We have always found that adapting recipes to meet our needs is fun. We like experimenting, lol.

This is for a bigger cake. Sometimes I only do half if it's just for Grace to bring to a party.

  • 2 cups oat flour
  • 2 cups brown rice flour(you can also do 1/2 flour and 1/2 protein powder)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 mashed banana
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup liquid (we use goat's milk but it can be other milks or even water)
  • Nuts optional
Mix all together and bake in a pan with greased bottom for about an hour.

Topping

  • heavy whipping cream
  • with 1 mashed banana
  • Strawberries for the top
Whip all together 'til stiff. We also put in food coloring to make it 'pretty.'

For more great program-friendly recipes, check out our cookbook in the store and visit our online Radiant Recipes site.

**Radiant YLD **

Something pretty amazing happened to me this week. I went to see the nurse at my doctor's surgery for a routine procedure. She asked about my kids, said how well I was looking and checked my weight. It was the same as the last time I had seen her......6 months ago.....

That kinda blew me away. I told her, 'Yay go me, that's pretty amazing.' She's seen me every size and I could tell she was pleased for me too.

This really was my last diet, ha, diet, not the right word really seeing as I don't feel like I've been on one :)

**Radiant Your Last Diet US Chat **
Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D.

Hi everyone,

I thought you would love to read this amazing chat we did on journaling. I have changed the names of the people so it may seem like you don't know anyone, LOL. Have fun reading it!

Eleanor:

Amber:

radiantkd:
Tonight I would like to talk about journaling :) Your favorite topic
Coralee:
good one
Annabelle:
Always an interesting topic
Frances:
OK let's do.
Colleen:
yep
Genvieve:
sounds good
Jocelyn:
:)
Amber:
:)
Maureen:
yay
radiantkd:
many people either don't journal or journal casually
radiantkd:
In a recent survey of people who felt they were ready for skillful journaling, I learned that almost none of them had what I would consider basic skills
radiantkd:
I see this as a failure on my part
radiantkd:
that I have not conveyed well what *basic skill* means :)
radiantkd:
so I thought tonight, we would talk about this so I can learn better how to help people know this
radiantkd:
Now, I know there are a couple of people in this chat who are highly skilled LOL so I am going to ask you guys to hold while we do some brainstorming
radiantkd:
ok ;)
radiantkd:
all rightie
Kim:
Looking for icon sitting on hands LOL
Samantha:
ok
radiantkd:
ok :) so 4 columns, yes?
Alice:
yes
Genvieve:
yes
radiantkd:
everyone got that part LOL
Kim:
yes
Amber:
yes
Annabelle:
yes
Maxine:
yes
radiantkd:
everyone usually gets that part
Jocelyn:
yes
Eleanor:
yes
Norma:
yes
Maureen:
yes
Colleen:
to be honest....not sure
Colleen:
doing the parts but not in columns so i think it's a yes
radiantkd:
ok, no problem, first column on left = day and time
radiantkd:
second column is food or drink
radiantkd:
third column is physical feelings
radiantkd:
and fourth is emotional feelings
radiantkd:
why are *columns* important
Maxine:
keeps it clear, organized?
Coralee:
logical?
Annabelle:
So you can find what you're looking for
Frances:
......for me.....because I tend to write too much and get it all mixed up
Colleen:
keeps it out of analysis?
Alice:
It makes it really obvious where the gaps are
radiantkd:
all of the above
Frances:
can go back and 'see' the day
radiantkd:
and you write less
Frances:
yes. that is really big for me
Colleen:
the facts, ma'am
radiantkd:
yes!
radiantkd:
so what does *time* mean
Colleen:
look at clock
Maxine:
time of day
Alice:
The time the event took place
Coralee:
hour on the clock
Frances:
the real time
Genvieve:
not guessing
Annabelle:
lets you see the interval between meals
radiantkd:
and why do you think this is important
Genvieve:
accurate information
Colleen:
to learn how to help myself ultimately lessen 'crashes'
Frances:
helps me flesh out my commitment to myself
Maxine:
to see if something physical or emotional has a pattern
radiantkd:
stopping la-la
Coralee:
to see if you eat within the hour
radiantkd:
many of us do not connect with *time*
radiantkd:
yes?
Colleen:
!!!!
Colleen:
don't like it
Frances:
YES
Coralee:
yes
Norma:
and I thought it was only me :)
Annabelle:
Sometimes...
Maureen:
yes
Frances:
my husband tells me i am not very good friends with time.
Coralee:
it's tough in the morning...fuzzy brain
radiantkd:
doesn't matter if you don't like it LOL
radiantkd:
it is part of healing
Eleanor:
i try to control time too much...too much schedule
radiantkd:
one of the *embedded* things LOL
Frances:
I like the laughing. just laugh and make friends with time
Colleen:
I've noticed changes
radiantkd:
I learned this when I did a 90/90 with my journal
radiantkd:
I was stunned
Alice:
What is a 90/90?
Eleanor:
please elaborate 90/90
radiantkd:
so precision is important
radiantkd:
I spent 90 days out of 90 days being VERY careful with my journal
Alice:
Thanks
radiantkd:
and I learned that I didn't always pay close attention to time
radiantkd:
and the difference between lunch at 12:15 and 12:45 was significant
Frances:
YES
Kim:
sure is
radiantkd:
so.....time is important :)
Colleen:
yes. I even space on dates
radiantkd:
ok, what about time for feelings
Annabelle:
how was it significant?
radiantkd:
earlier meal meant I felt better all day
Coralee:
hard to define feelings
radiantkd:
not talking about defining them yet
radiantkd:
I am just talking about time with them
Coralee:
ok
Alice:
That's just as important as the food because they are fleeting
Colleen:
time of eating.
radiantkd:
headache, upset stomach are feelings
radiantkd:
no, not time of eating :)
radiantkd:
time of happening
Coralee:
earlier meal?
radiantkd:
more noticing LOL
Colleen:
not understand/eating/happening
Annabelle:
more noticing what?
radiantkd:
you record feelings when *they* happen, not when you eat
radiantkd:
headache might be 4 PM
Annabelle:
Have journal chained to your wrist?
Colleen:
oh, wow, had no idea
Coralee:
so you can be recording feelings all day
Frances:
that is good. I am just starting to do that more. my brain first told me I had to have same time across the columns
radiantkd:
Annabelle, are you being funny or snarky LOL
Coralee:
not just at meals
Annabelle:
both
radiantkd:
well, stop please, that was kinda impolite
Annabelle:
I'm not always near journal when feelings occur
radiantkd:
many people carry it with them
Colleen:
may I ask/physical feelings or both types
radiantkd:
right now, I am just talking about physical feelings
Colleen:
ok
radiantkd:
nothing cosmic
radiantkd:
tired
radiantkd:
sleepy
radiantkd:
energized
radiantkd:
same concept, getting you to notice how you are feeling
Maxine:
It's easier for me to record negative feelings. I forget joy etc
Colleen:
when you did your 90/90, how many entries a day then approx
radiantkd:
now, if you don't want to carry your journal, you can simply make a mental note that you were tired at 4
Annabelle:
and remember to transfer it into the journal
Alice:
I would forget by 4:10:)
radiantkd:
Colleen, I have no idea. They all fit in Your Body speaks easily
radiantkd:
LOL
Coralee:
post-its?
radiantkd:
post its work
Colleen:
meant 'how often check in' or just note when you felt it and keep it simple
Annabelle:
so pay attention all day, write when something changes?
Colleen:
posts its are good
radiantkd:
for you or for me LOL
Eleanor:
right when you feel the physical feeling like headache etc
Frances:
I do not journal if it is not with me. that's why I liked Annabelle's comment...we all have to figure out how to stay connected to the journal, ie connected to me.
radiantkd:
yah, simple
radiantkd:
Danielle, that is exact idea
Colleen:
notice lightheaded, look at clock
radiantkd:
right
Eleanor:
yes
Annabelle:
Oh
Annabelle:
then write
radiantkd:
yes
radiantkd:
note on hand if you like
radiantkd:
feelings column can be happy, mad, sad
Annabelle:
a lot more information than just at meal times
radiantkd:
yes
Eleanor:
that makes sense because you might have a headache or stomach ache 1 hour after you eat
Frances:
this is so cool. simple. look at clock. write. no judgment. and for me no going on and on about what I think is going on.....
Coralee:
after eating junk, nauseous
radiantkd:
just facts
Eleanor:
i like that, just look at clock and write, no judgment
radiantkd:
right
Frances:
freeing
Eleanor:
truthful
radiantkd:
now, if you use YBS, you will get some other great info
radiantkd:
like what time you got up
Frances:
I LOVE YBS
Coralee:
protein counts
radiantkd:
what will that tell you?
Colleen:
if you eat within an hour
Annabelle:
did you eat b'fast w/in the hour
radiantkd:
I will come back to *counts* in a minute
radiantkd:
right!
Annabelle:
did you get enough sleep
radiantkd:
and what time you go to bed...what will that tell you?
radiantkd:
exactly
Coralee:
what if you get up at a different time every day?
radiantkd:
you enter it
Colleen:
how long you went without eating assuming you didn't get up and eat :-)
radiantkd:
and maybe think about the idea of how you might change it to get steady LOL
radiantkd:
all of the above
radiantkd:
great insight
radiantkd:
ok, YBS also tells you how much water you had
radiantkd:
which can be useful
Colleen:
because
radiantkd:
but back to columns
radiantkd:
let me come back to it
radiantkd:
I want to do columns first
radiantkd:
what about amounts
Frances:
oh boy
Eleanor:
hard part
radiantkd:
LOL most people are very casual
Colleen:
some meals easy others not
Coralee:
estimated amounts
radiantkd:
well first you need to learn to see your estimation skills
Colleen:
get out cups and scale?
radiantkd:
yes
Maxine:
precise with b/f only
Eleanor:
for how long
Frances:
one cup of brown rice is a lot more than I once thought it was. my estimation skills were quite off.
radiantkd:
till you can tell
radiantkd:
rooftop
Eleanor:
lol
Kim:
and every so often to keep your eye in LOL
Colleen:
what about multi ingredient casserole, etc. list ingredients
radiantkd:
most people are not good at estimating
Norma:
Frances, I recalibrate my eyeballs every so often
radiantkd:
Colleen, measure before you mix
Annabelle:
My amounts tend to drift upward
Frances:
yes, I get out my m. cup. :)
Colleen:
wow
radiantkd:
when you start, you can say medium chicken breast or large chicken breast
Norma:
Annabelle my amounts tend to drift downwards of healthy things and downwards of junk rooftop
radiantkd:
but you want to learn that a medium is 4 oz and a large is 6 oz
Colleen:
not half pan of casserole with mixed ingredients/time for restart
Kim:
and then divide the mixed list of ingredients by how many servings, it works out fairly evenly!
radiantkd:
measure cooked foods AFTER cooking
Frances:
wait...measure cooked chicken, not raw?
radiantkd:
Colleen, be reasonable not obsessive
radiantkd:
correct, Danielle
radiantkd:
raw chicken has lots of water
radiantkd:
you wont know how much protein accurately
radiantkd:
this is actually just a matter of learning it....once you do, it is very easy
radiantkd:
I can look at a piece of chicken or meat or fish and know how much it is
Kim:
I think of it as writing down what I actually ate (I didn't eat it raw!)
Norma:
:)
radiantkd:
sushi is raw LOL
Coralee:
no thanks
radiantkd:
and a new fact...Subway puts 2 oz of meat on a 12" sandwich
Kim:
If I ate it raw I would write that
Alice:
But if you always measure it raw, won't it work out in the end?
Colleen:
felt I needed to have less ingredients for a while in bakes to sort this out
Annabelle:
You'd be getting less protein?
radiantkd:
if you know how to calibrate the grams of protein in raw food
radiantkd:
if the food is 20% water or fat, it will make a difference
radiantkd:
now, when you are starting off, you won't be this precise
radiantkd:
but it is good to know what a 4 oz hamburger looks like
Eleanor:
so for protein, measuring in ounces is good. but what about for browns and greens...
radiantkd:
I use cups
Coralee:
are protein counts in YBS raw or cooked?
Eleanor:
yes that makes sense
radiantkd:
cooked
Coralee:
ah...
radiantkd:
meat is about 8 grams per ounce
radiantkd:
cooked ounce
radiantkd:
so if you buy a pound of hamburger that is 80%
radiantkd:
it means you will be getting closer to 6 per ounce
radiantkd:
does that make sense?
Coralee:
yes
Kim:
sorry, 80% what?
Alice:
yes
Annabelle:
80% what
radiantkd:
because the 80% means 20% is fat
Kim:
oh, OK
Colleen:
i'm a little lost...I will keep reviewing
Kim:
labelling differences LOL
radiantkd:
hamburger is sold as 80% (that is usually chuck) or 90% which is leaner
radiantkd:
fish is usually about 7 per ounce
Annabelle:
Oh - like 80% fat-free?
Frances:
I just grabbed my wrapper from ground turkey from dinner......they list 4oz as only 21gm...so that must be UNcooked
radiantkd:
it is actually simpler than you realize
radiantkd:
right MJ
Frances:
WOW
radiantkd:
80% meat means 20% fat
radiantkd:
4% milk means 4% fat
Frances:
so one pound ground turkey is really not enough for our present family of four!
radiantkd:
well it depends on how big your children are
Frances:
right
radiantkd:
:)
radiantkd:
eggs are 6-8 grams of protein each
radiantkd:
depending on the size of the egg
radiantkd:
are you overwhelmed?
Coralee:
no
Colleen:
*)
Alice:
no
Frances:
this is so good. I have not been eating enough protein.
Eleanor:
scales work great
radiantkd:
I have a scale and use it
radiantkd:
it is how I learned to eyeball
Alice:
Me too
Coralee:
I need to find my scale
radiantkd:
Colleen, yes having fewer ingredients will help you
Frances:
mine is broken....will buy new one
Colleen:
hard to disassociate from shame
Maxine:
I'm a little afraid of scales b/c of dieting days
radiantkd:
scale + cups is good
Kim:
getting real information gives you real choice
radiantkd:
reframe, ladies
Colleen:
oh, thanks, that's what I thought...less ingredients while learning to undo binge issue
radiantkd:
this can be fun
Colleen:
colored cups?
radiantkd:
a scale is a functional and neutral item
Coralee:
I will probably be getting a lot less peanut butter:D
Norma:
Maxine it is very freeing to internalize the reframe :)
radiantkd:
mine are colored LOL
Maxine:
Thank you for that-it is true!
radiantkd:
Coralee, that might be ok
radiantkd:
rooftop
radiantkd:
there is NO judgment here
radiantkd:
we are not dieting, we are learning how to be honest
Colleen:
weeping....honest try
radiantkd:
yes?
Coralee:
right
Eleanor:
yes
Norma:
yes
radiantkd:
and honest = HEALING
Maxine:
yes, I want to heal
radiantkd:
no more hiding
radiantkd:
or cheating LOL
radiantkd:
food is our healer
Frances:
honest = healing. nice
Kim:
that's a quotable quote
Annabelle:
I like that
Frances:
we look shame in the face, and hug ourselves.
Colleen:
used as secret harbor...want a real one not food
radiantkd:
ok, so when you put in your food, think, these are my healers
Maxine:
:)
Frances:
love it
radiantkd:
food is a real one, Colleen
Frances:
food is healing
radiantkd:
the thing that was killing us heals us
Kim:
I found that clear honest full disclosure to myself in my journal helped me heal the hiding and shameful feelings
radiantkd:
we flip it
Frances:
wow, food IS a real one. cool
Colleen:
maybe not less food, clearer cut food for now
Maxine:
:) Kim
radiantkd:
ok, so we are about out of time
radiantkd:
take a deep breath
radiantkd:
:) let yourself shift gears
Samantha:
I use to lie in my journal...now I am honest and it works better
Coralee:
thank you, I learned a lot
Alice:
This was great! Thank you.
Frances:
this was awesome
Amber:
thanks for a great chat
Maxine:
Thank you so much
Colleen:
clarity
radiantkd:
we will circle round again after you play a bit
Annabelle:
thank you - lots of info here
Eleanor:
thank i will now use columns and measure food until i can eyeball it accurately
Frances:
super, sounds great
Samantha:
Thank you, goodnight.
Colleen:
thank you.
radiantkd:
Have fun!!!
Jocelyn:
Great chat. Thank you. Good Night All.
Amber:
goodnight
Alice:
Good night.
Genvieve:
Good night!
Annabelle:
good night
radiantkd:
night!
Bernadette:
great chat, thank you!
Norma:
fabulous chat, thanks
Eleanor:
bless you KD
