Protecting Yourself from BE Spikes
One of the biggest "ah-ha's" I've gotten from this program is that emotions, both good AND bad, can affect our betaendorphin levels. And when your BE levels go way up, they must also go way down. This knowledge has helped me IMMENSELY.
For example, when a friend's son died, it really hit emotionally for many different reasons. You are going to feel badly, and food is one way you know to pick yourself up out of the doldrums. (Of course, when you use food, you crash, go looking for more food, crash again, etc., which is why it is never a good idea to use food to medicate yourself. Instead, find other ways to take care of yourself--hug your kids, your spouse, your dog, have a hot bubble bath, take a peaceful walk, etc.)
Now, let's say you get really good news. For me, it might be that a magazine bought one of my short stories. Yippee! I feel great, life is good. So, why, the next morning, do I feel like my best friend died and my dog got run over? Because my BEs went way high, and what goes up must come down. Luckily, I know that now, so when my BEs are flying, I know to be extra careful with my food.
As long as we are living and breathing, the emotions are going to come; the food is what we have control over. That's why it all goes back to the food and the best advice is "do the food".
