Gestational Diabetes

While I've never been pregnant, I was diagnosed with diabetes the same time my best friend (who was 5 months pregnant) was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. We would check our blood sugars together at lunch time. But, when her pregnancy was over, she got to go back to being "non-diabetic". I didn't.

Things you should know...
Try pricking the tip of the finger on your non-dominant hand. I usually use my middle finger because I can get the most blood out of it. Squeeze the tip of your finger a few times before you prick it. It will be sensitive for awhile, but once you get used to it, you won't really notice it.

DON'T eat a white potato at night. It'll cause too much of an insulin hit for you. Eat a sweet potato or triscuits instead.

And remember...if you think you need a snack (and you might) eat one. Make sure it's protein and a complex carb though. Keep triscuits and cheese around or an apple and no-sugar peanut butter.

And...if you really need the support, join the radiantdiabetes list. We have quite a few grandmothers on there who might not have had diabetes when they were pregnant, but...they remember what being pregnant was like and they know what it's like to be diabetic.
